MACHINE FOR DRESSING 0 R POLISHING STONE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,134, dated June 6, 1882.
Application filed April 14, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern 5 provement in Machines for Dressing or Polishin g Stone; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which-- I Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claim hereinafter presented.
Fig. 2 is an under side view of the rotary grinder or polisher of the said machine.
In Fig. 1 of such drawings, A denotes avertica-l shaft, duly supported in brackets a I), such shaft at its upper part being provided with a pulley, c, to receive a driving-belt, d, proceeding from a suitable motor. A frame, B, adapted to turn freely'and to slide vertically on the shaft A, is jointed to an auxiliary frame, C, by another vertical shaft, D, going down through them, the two frames being formed and arranged as represented. The frame U, at its outer end, carries a third shaft, E, which, arranged as shown, has connected to it, at its lower part, by a universal joint, F, a grinding or polishing wheel, G, which, when in revolution, rests upon the upper surface of a stone, H.
To the frame C and the shaft E a lever, I, is applied in manner to enable the shaft to .be raised or depressed by such lever and the frame to be vibrated or moved laterally, so as to convey the grinding or polishing wheel over any or all portions of the upper surface of the stone from time to time, as may be required.
Fixed on the shaft E is a pulley, d, about which and a pulley, e, on the shaft D is an end less belt, f. On the-upper part of the said shaft D is a set of pulleys, gh 2', about either of which and one of a similar set, is l m, arranged concentrically on the shaftAand adapted to it by a spline or feather connection, is an endless belt, n. The pulleys k l m, connected to each other, revolve with and are revolved by'the shaft A, and rest upon the frame B and move vertically therewith.
From the upper bracket a flat projection, K,
is extended, as shown. A lever, L, pivoted on the shaft A so as to turn horizontallythereon,
rests on the top of the bearing 0 of said bracket and extends rearward underneath the projection K, and is provided with a friction wheel or ball, p, to bear against the lower surface of the said projection. In the front arm of the said lever is a grooved wheel, q.
A chain, 1", attached to the frame B, extends upward to and partly around the wheel q, and thence downward through the upper part of said frame to a Windlass, 8, arranged in the lower part of the said frame, such Windlass having a winch, t, to turn its barrel, and the said barrel being provided with a ratchetwheel, u, to engage with a pawl, r, pivoted to the frame B, all being substantially as represented. On turning the winch it will be seen that the chain will be wound upon the windlass-barrel, and as a consequence the frames B and C and the parts supported by them will be drawn upward. Thus the mechanism has means of effecting the vertical adjustment of the frames B and C in order to bring the grinding-wheel to a proper height, as a stone of any depth may require. By means of the lever L and the bearing-projection K the chain 1' can swinglaterally with the frame B.-
.The grinder I usually make with curved grooves arranged on its lower surface in mannor as shown at w in Fig. 2, they being to gather in and hold the sand or abrasive material used with the wheel in effecting the reduction or polishing of the stone. On the shaft A being put in revolution rotary motion will be communicated to the grinder, which can be moved over the stone from end to end or side to side of it, as may be necessary to effect the required reduction of it.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the stationary plate K and the lever L, having the grooved wheel q, with the shaft A and its supports, and with the frames B and 0, adapted to each other and t0 the said shaft, and provided with the lifting-chain and with the grinder and its actuating mechanism, as explained, all being substantially as set forth.
