Description

March 25, 1952 w. 5. THQMPSQN DISPENSER AND APPLICATOR Filed Dec. 29, 1949 Patented Mar. 25, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to a combination dispenser and applicator device for various materials such as lip rouge and the like.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of a dispenser applicator device which is adapted for various uses but is particularly adapted for lip rouge.
The device of the invention is characterized by its extensibility and its means for locking the same against propelling of the rouge material when in the contracted or non-operating position.
Lip rouge applicators operate by a rotation of certain parts so that rouge material is propelled to make the rouge available and repelled to conceal the rouge. Such devices are short and stubby and are difficult of manipulation.
According to this invention the device is extensible when it is desired to project the lip rouge thereby providing a device of greater length than when contracted. The extensible feature provides a device approaching in length a pencil or fountain pen whereby it may be held in the hand say between the thumb and finger and more easily manipulated for applying rouge.
The device is contracted to provide a length corresponding to that of ordinary lipstick devices whereby it may be conveniently carried in a purse or handbag and when contracted the parts are releasably locked to prevent movement of the components which would cause the rouge material to smear the cap of the device.
All of the above objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts thereof, as will fully appear by a perusal of the description below and by various specific features which will be hereinafter set forth.
To the above cited and other ends and with the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more readily apparent as the description proceeds, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the rouge carrier or propeller of the device of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the assembled actuator, cam member and propeller of the device;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the sheath of the device;
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of the actuator barrel of the device;
Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of the cap of the device;
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of the device in contracted condition and the cap removed; and
Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6 showing the device in extended condition.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
A propeller is represented by 2 in Fig. 1 which may be in the form of a cup adapted to hold rouge material and to propel the same. A cam follower 4 extends from a side thereof.
A tubular actuator 6 has a lower portion 8 and an upper portion 10 with a projection ll adjacent its upper end which, as shown, may be in the form of an annular bead, see Fig. 2.
The said actuator is provided with a longitudinal cam slot l2 which is arranged spirally, as shown.
The member 2 is slidable in the upper portion H] of the member 6 and the follower 4 thereof projects through slot l2.
The lower end 8 of member 6 may be slightly larger in diameter than the upper part 16 as shown, and intermediate the opposite ends of said member 6 there is a longitudinal slot M.
A cam member l6 surrounds the upper portion l6 of member 6 and is provided with a longitudinal angularly disposed slot H3 in which follower 4 is movable. The lower portion of this cam member is provided with a slot 20 complemental to the slot [4.
The member I6 is held against longitudinal movement by projection H and lower portion 8 of the actuator.
The members 6 and [6 are rotatable relative to one another and as they are so rotated in opposite directions the slots [2 and E8 in which the follower 4 is disposed brings about upward and downward movements of the propeller in upper portion [0 of member 6 so that rouge material carried by the propeller projects from the upper open end of member 6 or is disposed downwardly therefrom.
A tubular sheath 22 is provided for slipping downwardly over the cam member [6 and is provided with a slot 24 corresponding to the slot 20 in member [6.
The cam member I6 is provided with an aperture 26 and sheath 22 is provided with a depression forming an inwardly extending projection 28 which is receivable in the aperture 26. The
3 projection and aperture releasably hold the sheath 22 on the cam member IS.
A hollow actuator barrel 30 has a lower wall 32 and is adapted to be slipped over the actuator B and sheath 22 and is arranged to freely slide on both and rotate with the actuator in one position.
A depression formed in a side of the actuator barrel provides an inwardly extending projection or key 34. The member 30 may be slipped upwardly over the lower end 8 of member 6 so that the key is received in slot [4 thereof.
With the actuator barrel 30 on the member 6 the upper portion thereof surrounds the lower portion of the sheath 22. The parts are assembled as described for operation of the device.
A cap 38, see Fig. 5, is provided which slips over the upper end of the sheath 22. Obviously the cap may be arranged to slip over the upper end 30' of the actuator barrel if desired.
As stated the actuator barrel 3% is slidable longitudinally relative to the lower end 8 of the actuator 6 and lower end of the sheath 22. The key 34 of the member 30 traverses the slot #4 of member 6 and slots 20 and 24 of members I6 and 22 as said member 39 is reciprocated relative to members 6 and 22 between contracted and extended positions.
In the upper or contracted position of member 30 key 34 thereof is disposed in upper ends of slots 20, 24 and I4 thereby locking actuator barrel 30 and sheath against relative rotation. In this locked position of the parts the propeller is in the intermediate or lower portion of the actuator and the parts being so locked the rouge material is not to be urged upwardly to engage and smear the cap as is the case with prior art devices.
In Fig. 6 the components are shown in contracted locked position.
When it is desired to use the rouge material the cap is of course removed and the sheath 22 and actuator barrel 30 are moved longitudinally outwardly relative to one another to the extended position shown in Fig. '7.
In this movement of the parts the key 34 passes out of the slots 29 and 24 along and into the lower portion of slot M of the actuator barrel 30. In this position as the actuator barrel 30 is rotated relative to sheath 22 key 34 in slot H! of the actuator brings about rotation of member 6 whereby the key 4 in slots 12 and it causes the propeller to be reciprocated in member 6.
Thus the device may be contracted between a relatively short length where the parts are locked and a longer extended length where the propeller may be reciprocated.
The parts may be made from various material such as thin metals and the like for light weight construction, ease in assembling and low cost pro duction.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in' all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
