Application July 7, 1948, Serial'N'o'; 37,481 j 17 Claims. (01. 70-138) This invention relates to a lock, and more particularly to a permutation lock assembly for use on panel type doors for small receptacles.
For application to small sheet metal receptacles, such as a house type mail box, it is desirable to have a lock mechanism which will provide an adequate degree of security without being too complicated or expensive. In accordance with the teaching of my invention, I achieve this aim by providing a lock in which the elements of the lock itself are made of relatively inexpensive metal parts arranged in a permutation assembly for adequate security, the number of lock parts needed being small for the security obtained. Thus the complexity and cost of the lock are more properly proportioned to the complexity and cost of the receptacle itselfthereby avoiding the use of a relatively heavy lock mechanism which will provide more security and cost more than the nature of the receptacle itself warrants.
It is, accordingly, an object of my invention to provide a new and improved simplified permutation lock assembly for use on doors for small receptacles. 7
It is another object of my invention to provide such a lock assembly in which the permutation mechanism is housed primarily behind a panel type door and in a housing which forms an operative part of the lock mechanism, said permutationmechanism being actuated from the front ofthe door.
It is a further object of my invention to provide such a lock assembly in which the permutation mechanism extends through a panel type door but is positioned primarily behind the door and is hidden from view from the rear of the door by a housing which forms an operative part of the loci; mechanism, said housing being operably connected to a member actuatable from in front of the p fn type door.
It is still another object of my invention to provide such a lock assembly in which the permutation mechanism is housed, in main part in a housing behind a panel type door, said housing normally engaging a catch member against movement and said housing being movable from the front of the panel type door when the permutation mechanism is correctly set. For a more detailed description of the permutation mechanism ll reference is again made to Figure 2 of the drawings. As shown there, this permutation mechanism includes an outer rotatable tumbler 22, an inner rotatable tumbler 23, and an operating spindle member 24. The parts 222i arearranged' such that the spindle 24 is located axially of the tumblers 22 and 23 and the latter are, of course, concentric with the spindle and with each other. The outer tumbler 22 is guided within a collar portion 25, which is formed integrally with the backing plate portion l4.
While this collar 25 is shown as beingintegral with part 84, it is, of course, obvious that it could be separate and merely attached to the part I l.
The spindle member 24 includes a reduced diameter portion 263 which extends through an opening 2! located at the rear of the inner tumbler 23. A shoulder 28 is provided on this inner tumbler 23, adjacent the opening 2'i therein, and this shoulder 28 is oppositely disposed with respect to a shoulder 29 located on the spindle member 24 where the reduced diameter portion 28 commences. Between the shoulders 28 and 29 a coil spring 3i) is located which biases the spindle member 24 outwardly toward the front of the panel type door 50.
Each of the tumbler members 22 and 23 is provided with a lock fence and also with an index ring. For example, the outer tumbler 22 has. a fence ring; 3| attached thereto adjacent the rear end of the tumbler. This fence ring 3| is-a snap-on type metal ring which grips the outer surface of the tumbler sufficiently strongly so that the fence ring will maintain a given position but can be adjusted if desired whereby the lock setting can be varied if it is desired to change the combination numerals which must be set to enable release of the lock. In order to facilitate this assembly, the fence ring 31 is seated in a shallow groove 32 formed adjacent the rear end of tumbler 22. This fence ring 3i contains a gap 33 for a purpose hereinafter described. In similar manner, a snap-on type fence ring 34 is attached adjacent the rear end of the inner tumbler 23 and this fence ring contains a gap 35.
A was mentioned above, the outer tumbler 2.2 isguided within and by the collar portion 25 of backing plate member [4. This tumbler member extends through an opening 35 in the panel type door l and is retained in place with respect to this opening by means of a snap-on type clamp ring 31. The forward end of the tumbler 22 is stepped down to provide a shoulder portion, as shown in Figure 2, for receiving an index ring 38. Flattened portions 39 and 40 are provided on the stepped down portion of the front end of the tumbler 22 and the index ring 38 has correspondingly shaped portions which engage the flattened portions 39 and 40 to maintain the index ring against rotation with respect to the tumbler 22. As will be evident to those skilled in the art, what has just been described is a common means of keying an index ring to a tumbler end and I find this arrangement to be quite sufficient for my purposes. While no set screw is shown for maintaining the index ring in fixed position with respect to the tumbler 22, such could be provided if desired. .For most ap-. plications,.a simplepresslfitof the parts will be sufiicient. .. :The inner tumbler:23:.is: supported'withirespect to the outer tumbler 22 in essentially the same manner as the latter is supported with respect to the panel type door It] and the collar portion 25. In other Words, the inner tumbler 23 is guided within the outer tumbler 22 and is provided with a snap-on ring clamp 4! adjacent the front end of the inner tumbler. This ring 4! bears against the front edge of the outer tumbler 22 and prevents slippage inward of the inner tumbler with respect to the outer tumbler. The inner tumbler 23 is also provided with a stepped down front end portion containing flats E2 and t3 which engage. correspondingly formed portions on index ring 4! to maintain the index ring against rotation with respect to the tumbler. Accordingly, it is seen that each tumbler contains an index ring and that these index rings are ar- 7 ranged so that the front of each ring is visible.
The cup-shaped housing 12 is rigidly attached to the end of the stepped down portion 26 of spindle 25 by means such as the metal screw 4.5. Housing i2 is concentric with respect to the tumblers 22 and 23 and hence the spindle 24 is located axially of the housing. The housing has a pair of projections 46 and extending inwardly thereof. These projections are aligned in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing, i. e. parallel to the spindle member 26 and are located, respectively, adjacent fences 34and 3|. The projections 48 and t? are of such size that they can pass through gaps 35 and 33, respectively, when these gaps are. aligned but will abut against the fences if one attempts to. move the housing back when the gaps are not aligned with respect to the projections. A guide pin :38, attached to the collar portion 25 of backing plate 1 engages the .walls of a slot'49, formed inhousing 12, to keep the housing inalignment such that projections and 41 remain in uppermost position.
As has been mentioned above, the housing l2 contains portions l8 and [.9 which extend into openings 29 and 21 provided in the door catch member l3. These portions 18 and i9 are in the.
formof extensionlugs and they, of course, also extend through openings 50 and 5| in the backing plate 14 which openings correspond in size and shape to the openings 20 and 2!. The door catch member; l3, which is engaged against movement by the portions l8 and E9 of the housing when thelock is in locked position, is shown in greater detail in Figures 4 and 5. Referring to these figures, it is seen that this catch member includes two arcuate semicircular portions 5.2 and 5.3 which substantially completely encircle the outer tumbler 22. Oppositely disposed ear portions 54 and 55 are formed on corresponding opposite ends of portions 52 and 53 and these ear portions are maintained adjacent each other by anut and bolt assembly 56 which includesa tensioningspring 5!v for bias of the parts toward each other. At the opposite side of arcuate;portions52 and 53 an ear portion 58 is formed on arcuate portion 53 and a latch member 59 is formed as an extension of arcuate portion 52. Parts 58 and 59 are maintained in juxtaposition by means of a nut and bolt assembly 60 including .a take-up spring 61 to provide bias of the parts toward one another. The inner surfaces of arcuateportions 52 and 53 are lined with a friction liner 62, preferably leather, which closely engages the outer surface of tumbler 22 in, response to-the-urging of springs 51' and 6!.
slnxthe assembly of zthe parts as shown in the drawings, the doorcatch member 13 is engaged accuse by-portions I8 and I9 of housing I2 with-the result that the catch member is maintained against rotation. Being so maintained, the latch arm 59 extends substantially horizontally, see Figures 1, 4 and 5, and when in this position the latch member can readily engage a suitable stop member or other abutment on, for example, the door jamb to maintain the panel type door securely locked. As an example, Figure 5 discloses a stop member 63, said stop member being engaged by the latch arm 59 to maintain the door II] in closed position.
When it is desired to release the latch arm, i. e.
to unlock the panel type door, the operation is as follows: The index rings 38 and 44 arerotated until, for each ring, the correct numeral of the combination is uppermost. To'facilitate alignment a. vertical alignment marker 64 is formed on the front of panel type door I0. When the index rings 38 and 44 areset correctly, gaps-35' and 33 will be aligned, respectively, with projections 46 and 41. Pressure inward on spindle 24 will force the housing I2 backward against the bias of spring 39, projections 46 and 41 passing through gaps 35 and 33, respectively, until the projecting portions or lugs I8 and I9 on housing I2 pass from within openings 29 and 2| in catch member I3. When this occurs, index ring 38 can'be r- 1 tated counter clockwise and, due tothe frictional engagement between the leather lining 62 and the outer surface of tumbler 22, the latch arm 59 will be rotated downwardas shown by the dotted line path outlined in Figure This is movement of the door catch member, I3 from door lock to door release position. This movement, of course, removes the latch arm 59 from obstructing opening of the panel type door I0 and the latter can be swung to open position.
When it is desired to re-lock the door, the index ring are again set to correct position whereupon gaps 35 and 33 are aligned to permit projections 46 and 41 to pass therethrough toward the panel door ID. If 'perchance openings 29 and 2I are not correctly aligned with respect to the ends of portions I8 and I9, these ends will abut against arcuate members 52 and 53 and, simply by turning index ring 38, the openings 20 and H can be brought opposite portions I8 and I9 whereupon these portions will slip to a slight extent into the openings under theinfluence of spring 39 and thereby hold the door catch member I3 so that the gap 33 may be aligned with projection 41 so that'the projections 46 and 41 may pass through the gaps 35 and 33 respectively in the direction of the door and the portions I8 and I9 may extend completely into the openings 29 and 2| 'of the door catch member I3. The index rings 38 and 44 are then turned to disalign the said projections and gaps and thus the lock is again in looking condition. Thus the door catch member I3 can be moved from door release to door lock position wherein latch arm 59 again obstructs opening of door IIJ. Movement of the housing I 2 and projections 46 and 41 is shown in dotted outline in Figure 2,. and the movement indicated there is sufiicient for the portions I8 and I9 to clear from within openings 20 and 2|.
It will thus be seen that I have shown and ole-'- scribed a permutation lock assembly for use with a panel type door in which the lock parts can be made of relatively light and inexpensive metal parts. For example, the backing plate I4 can be made of thin gaugesheet metal.v Likewise, the housing I2, can be made of thin gauge sheet metal and the tumblers '22 and 23and the spindle 24 can be formed from ordinary metal stock... Two" index set member are provided to give the advantages of a permutation assembly but even this assembly is of simplified nature to keep the cost of the whole lock assembly to a low figure. The housing member I2, while performing its normal function of housing and protecting the major portion of the lock parts, also forms an operative part of the lock assembly thus giving it a dual function and keeping the number of parts down. While the door catch member I3 is illustrated as being a rotatable member it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the exact type of mechanical movement of the catch member is not controlling as long as the catch member coacts with the housing I2 in the manner described above.
Accordingly, while I have described and illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not intend to be restricted solely thereto, but that I do intend to include all modifications thereof which would be readily apparent to one skilled in the art and which come within the spirit and scope of my invention. I
I claim as my invention:
1. A permutation lock comprising a plurality of concentric hollow cylindrical tumblers, a housing surrounding a portion of each of said tumblers, means on said housing positionable in looking relation with means on said tumblers to prevent movement of said housing with respect to said tumblers, means to position said tumbler means to allow movement of said housing with respect to said tumblers, and means to move said housing when said tumbler means are set to allow movement of said housing, said last named means extending through said tumblers.
2. A permutation lock comprising a plurality of concentric hollow cylindrical tumblers, a fence on each tumbler, a housing surrounding a portion of each of said tumblers, said surrounded portion having the fence thereon, projections on said housing corresponding in number to the number of fences, means to position said fences in looking relation with said projections to prevent movement of said housing with respect to said tumblers, means to position said fences to allow movement of said housing with respect to said tumblers, and means to move said housing when said fences are positioned to allow such movement, said last named means extending through said tumblers.

A permutation lock comprising a plurality of ;concentric hollow cylindrical tumblers, a fence on each tumbler, a cup shaped housing having a portion positioned concentrically of said tumblers and surrounding a portion of each of said tumblers, said surrounded portion having the fence thereon, projections on said housing corresponding in number to the number of fences, said projections extending inwardly of said housing, means to position said fences in looking relation with said projections to prevent movement of said housing with respect to said" tumblers, means to position said fences to allow said tumblers to move said housing with respect to said tumblers when said fences are positioned to allow such movement.
4. A permutation lock comprising a hollow cylindrical tumbler, a fence on said tumbler, a
cup-shaped housing surrounding said fence, said housing Ibeirig positioned concentrically of said tumbler, a projectionextending inwardly from said housing, means to position said ,fence in locking relation-with said projection to prevent movement of saidhousing with respect to said tumbler, means to position said fence to allow movement of said housing with respect to said tumbler, a spindle member attached to said housing, said spindlemember being positioned axially of said tumbler and extending therethrough, and resilient means positioned between said spindle member and said, tumbler, saidresilientmeans engaging said spindle member and saidtumbler to urge the spindle member outward with respect to the tumbler, and said spindle member being movable inwardly of said tumbler against the bias of said resilient means to'move said, housing with respectto said tumbler when the fence ispositioned to allow such movement.
5. A door lock mechanism comprising catch, member, means supporting said member for ,movement from door lock to door release position and vice versa, a permutation mechanism, a housing for said permutation mechanism, said housing being positioned adjacent to said permutation mechanism, locking .-.means on said housing, said permutation mechanism having portions engageable by said locking means to maintain said permutation mechanism and housing in locked relation, projections on said housing, means on said door catch member normally engaged by said projections to maintain said catch member in door lock position when saidgpermutation mechanism and housing are in locked relation, means to set said permutation mechanism portions inrnon-locked relation with the locking means on said housing, and means to then move said housing projections rout of engagement with the means on said door catch member normally engaged thereby, said catch r member then being freed for movement to door release position.
6. A door lock mechanism adapted for use with appanel member having front and rear sides and also having an opening extending therethrough, said mechanism comprising a door catch member, meansisupporting said door catch member for movement from door lock to door release position and vice versa, a permutation mechanism adapted to extend through the opening in said panel member, a housing for said permutation mechanism said housing being positioned adjacent to .said permutation mechanism, locking means on said housing, said permutation mechanism having portions engageable by said locking means to maintain said permutation mechanism and housing in locked relation, projections on said housing, means on said door catch member normally engaged by said projections to maintain said catch member in door locking position when permutation mechanism and housing are in locked relation, means to set said permutation mechanism portions in non-locked relation with the locking means on said housing, and means adapted to be operated from the front side of the panel member to then move said housing projections out of engagement with the means on said door catch member normally engaged thereby, said catch member then being freed for movement to door release position.

A door lock mechanism adapted for use with apanel member having an opening extending therethrough, said mechanism comprising a door catchmember adapted to be positioned adjacent 8 to said ;panel member, said rcatch member also having an vopening extending .therethrough and said opening being adapted to be aligned with the openingin the panel member, a permutation mechanism" extending through the catch member opening and adapted to extend through the, panel member opening, said permutation mechanism supporting said catch member for movementfrom door lock to door release position and vice versa, a housing for said permutation mechanism, said housingbeing positioned adjacent to said permutation mechanism, locking means on said housing, said permutation mechanism having portions engageable by said locking means to maintain said permutation mechanism and housing in.locked relation, projections on said housing, means on said door catch member normally engaged by said projections to maintain said catch member in door lock position when said permutation mechanism and housing are'in locked relation, means to set said permutation mechanism portions in non-locked relation with the locking .-means ..on said housing, and means to then move said housing projections out of engagement with the means on said door catch member normally engaged thereby, said catch member then being freed for movement to door release position.
8. A door lock mechanism adapted for use with a substantially fiat panel member having front and rearsides and having an opening extending therethrough, said mechanism comprising a door catch member adapted to be'positioned adjacent to the rear side of said panel member, means supporting said catch member for movement from door lock to door release position and vice versa, said catch member being constructed and arranged whereby said movementis in a path parallel to the rear side of. said panel member when said catch member is postitioned adjacent to said rear side, a permutationmechanism adapted to extend through the opening in said panel member, a housing for said permutation mechanism, said housing being positioned adjacent "to said permutation mechanism/locking means on said housing, said permutation mechanism having portions engageable byysaid locking means to maintain said permutation mechanismand housingin locked relation, projections on said housing, means on said door catch member normally engaged by said projections to maintainsaid catch member indoor lock position when said permutation mechanism and housing are in locked relation, means to set said permutation mechanism portions in nonlocked relation with the locking means on said housing, and, means adapted to be operated from the front side of the panel member to then move said housing projections out of engagement with the means on said door catch member normally engaged, thereby, said catch member then being freed for movement to door release position.
9. A door lock mechanism adapted for use with a panel member having front and rear sides and also having an opening extending therethrough, said mechanism comprising a door catch member adapted to be positioned adjacent to the rear side of the said panel member, means supporting said catch member for movement from door lock to door release position and vice versa, a permutation mechanismadapted to extend through the opening in said panel member, a housing 'surrounding'a part of said permutation mechanism, said housing'also being adapted to be positioned adjacent the rear-aside of said;.:panel member, locking, means on. said-housin aid permutation mechanism having portions engageable by said locking means to maintain said permutation mechanism and housing in locked relation, projections on said housing, means on said door catch member normally engaged by said projections to maintain said catch member in door lock position when said permutation mechanism and housing are in locked relation, means to set said permutation mechanism portions in non-locked relation with the locking means on said housing, and means adapted to be operated from the front side of the panel member to then move said housing projections out of engagement with the means on said door catch member normally engaged thereby, said catch member then being freedfor movement to door release position.
10. In combination, a door lock mechanism and a substantially flat panel member having front and rear sides, said panel member having an opening extending therethrough, said lock mechanism comprising a backing plate positioned in spacedparallel relation to said panel member,
, means attaching said backing plate to the rear side of said panel member, said backing plate also having an opening extending therethrough and said opening being aligned with the opening in said panel member, a door'catch member positioned between said backing plate and said panel member, means supporting said catch member for movement from door lock to door release being positioned adjacent to said permutation mechanism, locking means on said housing, said permutation mechanism having portions engageable by said locking means to maintain said per- 'mutation mechanism and housing in locked relation, projections on said housing, means on said door catch member normally engaged by said projections to maintain said catch member in 'door lock position when said permutation mechanism and housing are in locked relation, means to set said permutation mechanism portions in non-locked relation with the locking means on said housing, and means to then move said housing projections out of engagement with the means on said door catch member normally engaged thereby, said catch member then being freed for movement to door release position and said housing moving means being operable from the front side of said panel member.
11. A door lock mechanism adapted for use with a panel member having front and rear sides and also having an opening extending therethrough, said mechanism comprising a door catch member adapted to be positioned adjacent to the rear side of said panel member, means supporting said catch member for movement from door lock to door release position and vice versa, a plural tumbler permutation mechanism adapted to extend through the opening in said. panel member, a housing surrounding a part of said permutation mechanism, locking means on said housing, said permutation mechanism having tumbler members engageable by said locking means to maintain said permutation mechanism and housing in locked relation, projections on said housing, means on said door catch member normally en-- gaged by said projections to maintain said catch member in door lock position when said permutation mechanism and housing are in locked relation, means to set said permutation mech anism tumbler members in non-looked relation,
with the locking means on said housing, and means adapted to be operated from the front side of the panel member to then move said housing projections out of engagement with the means on said door catch member normally engaged thereby, said catch member then being freed for movement to door release position.
12. A door lock mechanism adapted for use with a substantially flat panel member havin front and rear sides and also having anopening extending therethrough, said mechanism comprising a door catch member adapted to be positioned adjacent the rear side of said panel member, means supporting said catch rnember for movement from door lock to door release position and vice versa, said catch member being constructed and arranged whereby said movement is in a path parallel to the rear side of said panel member when said catch member is positioned adjacent to said rear side, a plural tumbler permutation mechanism-adapted to extend through the opening in said panel member, said catch member having an opening therethrough and said permutation mechanism, extending through said opening, a housing surrounding a part of said permutation mechanism, locking means on said housing, said permutation mechanism having tumbler members engageable by said locking means to maintain said permutation mechanism and housing in locked relation, projections on said housing, means on saiddoor catch member normally engaged bysaid pro- ,jections to maintain said catch member indoor lock position when said permutation mechanism and housing are in locked relation, means to set said. permutation mechanism tumbler members in non-locked relation with the locking means on said housing,- and means adapted to be operated from the front side of the panel member to then move said housing projections out of engagement with the means on said door catch member normally engaged thereby-said catch member then being freed for movement to door release position.

In a doorlock mechanism having a; cylindrical lock member supported by and extending through a panel member, a door catch member" surrounding said lock member and being movable from door lock position to door release position and vice'versa, said catch member comprising oppositely disposed arcuate members, a frictionxliner on each of said. arcuate members, said liners engaging the outer surface of "said cylindrical lock member, and means; urging said friction liners against the; outer surface of said cylindrical lock member whereby rotation ofisaid lock member causes. rotation of said catch member.

In a door lock mechanism having a cylindrical lock member supported by. and extending through a panel member, a door catch member surrounding. and engaging said cylindrical lock member and being-movable therewith fromdoor lock to door release positionand'vice versa, said catch member comprising. oppositely. disposed arcuatemembers positioned concentric with said cylindrical lock member, .a latch arm formingan extension of one. of saidiarcuatei members, and means. connecting said arcuatemembers together.
