WAGON-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,445, dated May 23, 1882.
Application filed January 25, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES JEROME LE ROY, of Palestine, in the county of Anderson and State of Texas, and J OHN WESLEY HEN- SON, of Dallas,in the coun tyof Dallas and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wagon-Brakes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an automatic brake for wagons and other wheeled vehicles running on dirt roads.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan View of the running-gear of a wagon, showing our improved brake. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a wagon with bed, showing the improvement, both views being partly broken away.
The reach a and hounds b of the wagon are provided with a cross-bar, a, upon which is supported, in a horizontal position, the brakearm b. The brake-arm is connected to the.
rear bolster, c, by rods 0 near the outer ends 2 5 of Said arm, and is connected by means of a rod, d, at the center with alever, d, pivoted to the under side of the reach. The long end of the lever is connected to the hound 1), adjacent thereto, by a spiral spring, 6, which tends to draw the said end rearward, while the said long end is also connected by means of a chain, c, with the double-trees f. The double-trees are supported loosely upon the tongue f, and confined within a guide consist- 3 5 ing of the slotted bar 9, secured longitudinally above the tongue by bolts at each end, which project above the bar. The double-trees are provided with an upward-projecting bolt, which plays within the Slotted bar and prevents the double trees from lateral movement. The double-trees are thus adapted to slide backward and forward along the tongue, and by means of a link, 9, in their bolt, which is to be hooked over the forward bolt of the slotted bar, may be 4 5 held in a forward position, or by means of the link 9* in the rear bolt of the slotted bar, which is to be hooked over the bolt of the doubletrees, may be held in arearward position.
The operation of the device is as follows: When power is applied to the double-trees they slide forward under the slotted bar and draw the chain c, which causes the short end of the lever d to move backward. By this movement the brake'arm b is forced upward by its connection with said lever and the brake-shoes are held out of contact with the wheels. WVhen going down grade, or when power is no longer applied to the double-trees, the tension of the spring a will cause the double-trees to slide backward and allow the short end of the lever d to move forward and draw the brake-arm b downward until the shoes touch the wheels, when the friction of the latter will cause the shoes to move farther downward and bind the wheels. This result is accomplished ,by the eccentric movement of the brake-arm, which moves along an arc having thecenter of its circle at the rear ends of the rods 0.
This brake may be used on a wagon either with or without a bed, and when a bed is used it may be secured thereto by means of straps i, as shown in Fig. 2.
By means of the link 9 the brake may be locked out of contact with the wheels, or by 7 5 the link 9 it may be locked so as to hold the wheels as long as desired.
As the shoes in this brake are easily detach able, they may be removed in muddy lands to prevent clogging the wheels with mud.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wagon-brake, the combination, with a running-gear, of a brake-arm supported across the reach and connected by rods to the rear bolster, a lever pivoted underneath the reach and connected rigidly at one end to the said arm and at the other end having a spring connected to the adjacent hound, and a back-- 0 and-forth-slidin g doubletree connected to said lever by a chain, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a wagon-brake, the combination, with a wagon, of the brake-arm b, supported upon 5' the bar a, the rods 0, connecting the arm to the rear bolster, the lever d, pivoted to the upward-projecting bolts at each end, and the reach and connected to the arm by the rod (1, link g in the rear bolt, and a suitable brake the spring a, connecting the long end of the connected to the doubletree, substantially as lever to the adjacent hound, and a suitable deshown and described.
5 vice for operating the said lever, substantially V, r
as shown and described. E E
3. In a wagon-brake, the combination, with L a Wagon, 0f the double tree f, having an up- Vitnesses: ward-projecting bolt; provided with a link, y, W. M. THOMPSON,
10 the guide consisting of the slotted bar 9 and I). THOMPSON.
