Description
Jan. 29, 1952 J. J. CAVANAGH GARMENT HANGER Filed 00u18.; 1949 Patented Jan. 29, 11952 UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE GARMENT HANGER John J. Cavanagh, Hicksville, N. Y. l'Application October 18, 1949, Serial No. 122,051
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a hanger for supportlng trousers in an inverted position by engagement within the lower ends of the trousers legs.
The invention has in view a hanger for supporting trousers including a longitudinally contractable and extensible hanger bar composed of linear sections which are normally tensioned against inward movement and which are provided with clamping jaws adapted to engage in the lower ends of the legs of the trousers for stretching the same as well as clamping the ends of the legs together.
Another object of the invention isto provide a trousers hanger having improved intertting means connecting the linear sections together for guided longitudinal movement with reference to each other and by which the sections are retained against lateral and longitudinal bending Vso as to maintain the sections in linear relation. l l p y Still another object of the invention is to provide an improved trousers hanger which is sturdy in construction, which will retain its form without flexing with the weight imposed thereon, and which can be produced at reasonable cost.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an improved trousers hanger which is constructed and arranged to permit of the convenient intertting and assembly of the parts.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of a trousers hanger constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 2-2 of Fig, 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 3-3 of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 4--4 of Fig, 1.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the trousers hanger includes la hanger bar I composed of linear sections II and I2 which overlap at their inner ends and are provided with inwardly directed portions I3 formed integrally with the upper and lower edges thereof and defining channels between the same and the linear sections II and I2 respectively for slidably receiving the other section. The sections II and I2 consist of flat bars formed with interfitting ribs I4 and I5 which extend longitudinally of the sections respectively medially thereof. The rib I5 is of a size to snugly t within the rib I4 as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings so as to reinforce the sections and retain the same against bending either laterally or longitudinally when subjected to the weight of the trousers.
Thel sections II and I2 arel each provided with a clamp I6 which is rigidly ainxed thereto at the outer end thereof for movement with the section. The clamps I6 each include oppositely disposed clamping jaws I'I and IB having upper ends I9 adapted to be manipulated for spreading the lower ends of the clamping jaws apart. The said clamping jaws are mounted in oppositely disposed slots 20 and 24 formed in a split cylindrical tube 2I having a rebent medial portion 22 fitted over the upwardly projecting portion 23 of the section and secured thereto by a rivet 25. The clamping jaws extend downwardly through the split in the cylindrical-tube with the opposite ends 26 of the split portion tensioned Iagainst the clamping jaws respectively. The clamping jaws are held in oppositely `disposed tensioned relation with the lower ends thereof disposed in tensioned abutting engagement when the hanger is not in use and are secured against vertical movement in the slots 20 and 24 respectively by means of outstruck lugs 21 located below the split ends 26 of the cylindrical tube and by shoulders 28 at the bases of the upper ends I9.
The clamping jaws I1 and I8 are formed with a plurality of longitudinally extending ribs 29 which function to strengthen the same so as to prevent bending thereof. The split ends 26 of the cylindrical tubes 2| are serrated as at 3|] corresponding to the formation of the ribs 29 in which serrations the ribs engage so as to retain the clamping jaws I'I and I8 in alignment and prevent sidewise movement thereof. The outer curved portions of the ribs I4 and I5 are slotted as at 3I through which protrude the clamping jaws I'I for retaining the same in right angular relation with the sections respectively.
The sections II and I2 of the hanger bar are movable longitudinally with reference to each other and are tensioned against inward movement by means of a spring wire supporting member 33 which is pivotally connected at its opposite ends with the sections I I and I2 by grommets 34. rlhe spring wire member 33 includes opposite disposed upper bowed portions 35 and a downwardly extending medial arcuate portion 36 in which is secured a cylindrical member 31 having an annular groove 38 in the periphery thereof in which the lower arcuate portion 39 of a suspension hook 40 is swngably carried.
In use, the sections/I I and I2 of the hanger bar are forced inwardly against the tension of the spring supporting member 33 and the clamping ase'aoce 3 Y Y jaws l1 inserted in one of the leg openings at the bottom of the trousers and the clamping jaws I8 inserted in the other leg opening. The sections and clamping jaws are then released whereby the spring supporting member 33 functions to stretch the trousers legs laterally and the clamping jaws are tightened against the trousers legs to retainx the trouserson the hanger.
What isi claimed is:
1. In a trousers hanger, a hanger bar including a pair of Vrigid linear strap sections each having;
Yan inner end formed with means defining a chana pair of rigid linear strap sections each'having an inner end formed with means denng a channel with the channeled ends of the sections interengaging to connectV the sections together for guided relative longitudinal movement with refierence to each other, a clamp secured to the outer end of each section including a pairV of clamping jaws and a cylindrical, resilient tube split, along, the under sidethereofi; formingoppositely disposed arcuate side portions, said side 1 portions having slots for receiving the upper ends of the clamping jaws therethrough with thejaws protruding through the split and the. opposite, side Vportions exerting Aan inward tension against the clamping jaws, said split tubesieaehincluding an upwardly extending inverted U-shaped medial portion connecting the arcuate side portions, said linear sections each having upwardly projecting portions at their the; lower ends. of the.` j aws extending down s wardly between the: side portions andpwi-thf sai-d, side. portions, exerting an inwards tension against the jaws, said linear sections. each having up; wardlyV projecting portions atjtheir' outer ends, mea-ns rigidly securing` saidupwardly proj eating portions of the; linear sections:- to' said',l upwardly` extending ends of said; arcuate` sidey portions for" seeuringthe` clamps to thelsecti'ons for movement therewith, said clamping jaws having longitudinally extending ribs. and the lower edgesoff sai'd arcuate side portions being serrated for: reav ceiving theribs ofthe clamping jaws for retain ing the samew against movement with reference thereto.
2'; In a trousers hanger; a'hangerbar includingV outerA ends over which said-fV invertedf Usl1`aped medial portions of the t'nbesY are iittedfl respec-LVA tively and` rigidly affixed thereto fory securingfthe clamps to Vthe sections for movement therewith, said clamping-v jawsv having longitudinallyextend`` ingl ribs, and the edges of-'sai'd split portion, or?
