(N0 Model.) 7 v E. L. BRYANT.
LAMP BURNER. No. 258,865. 8 Patented May 23, 1882.
N. PETERS. Fholo-L'rlhogmpbur. Washhglnn. D c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDSON L. BRYANT, OF ANSONIA, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WALLACE & SONS, OF SAME PLACE.
LAMP-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,365, dated May 23, 1882.
Application filed April 15,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDsoN L. BRYANT, of Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new Improvements in Lamp-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference arked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a sectional side view; Fig. 2, the chimney-rest and air-distributor as cut from sheet metal; Fig. 3, a top view.
This invention relates to an improvementiu that class of burners which consist of a chimney-rest attached to a base to be secured to the burner, and a deflector on said chimney-rest, with a perforated air-distributer between the base and the deflector, and particularly to that class in which the deflector is hinged to the chimney-rest. In burners in which the deflector is hinged to the chim hey-rest the springs which secure the chimney upon the rest have usually been made in separate pieces and secured either to the chimney-rest or base below.
The object of my invention is to construct the chimney-rest, air-distributor, and springs in one andthe same piece, and so that the deflector may be hinged thereto and in such construction, as more fully hereinafter described, my invention consists.
A is the base of the burner, threaded in the usual manner for attachment to the lam p-collar. The chimney-rest B is cut from sheet metal, in disk form, a little larger than the diameter required for the rest, and at several points around its edge-here represented as tone-projecting arms C are formed in the pro cess of cutting the rest-that is, in one and the same piece with the rest. The central portion, D, is perforated to form the air-distrib' uter, and at the center an aperture, 0, for the wick-tube is made. This blank is struck up to form a central concavo-convex air-distributer, the edge turned up to form the flange 1), within which the chimney stands. The arms C are turned up and bent inward, as seen in Fig. 1.
in one and the same The deflector E is of usual form but instead of being entirely removable from the distributer or rest, as usual in this class of construction, it is hinged at one side, as at d, and on the other is secured by a tongue, e, passing down through an opening out in the chimhey-rest, as seen in Fig.2. The hinging-point d comes midway between either. two of the springs C, as seen in Fig. 3, so that in raising the deflector it will swing outward between the arms, as seen in Fig. 1, and broken lines, Fig. 3. V
The chimney-rest is secured to the base by arms h in the usual or any well known n1anuer.
I am aware that chimney-rests have been 6 constructed with springs around the edge, formed in the same piece with the chimneyrest; but these have been in the form ofaslitted flange, continuous around the edge, and in the construction of burners with such a chim- 7o ney-rest it has been necessary to make the deflector detachable. It cannot be hinged because it cannot be opened, the spring-flange around the rest preventing such opening movement of the deflector. By my improvementI am enabled to make the rest, air-distributer, and springs in one and the same piece, and hinge the deflector thereto, and in so doing save very much of the labor required in the manufacture of this class of burners over that in which the springs are made separate from the chimney-rest.
I do not wish to be understood as claiming broadly a chimney-restand springs constructed piece with an air-deflector. 8
I claim- As an article of manufacture, the herein-described burner, consisting of the chimney-rest, perforated air-distributer, and springs C, all made in one and the same piece, attached to 0 the base, and having the deflector E, hinged to the rest at a point between the chimneysprings, substantially as described.
EDSON L. BRYANT.
