MVBNTILATOB. P011 WINDOWS.
No. 258,282. Patented May 23, 1882.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUGH H. CRAIG, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
VENTILATOR FOR WINDOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,282, dated May 23, 1882.
Application filed February 24, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, HUGH H. CRAIG, of Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators for Windows; and I hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exactly described as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which.
Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view of a window embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the device, and Figs.3 and 4. are each elevations and plans of modified forms of a detail of the device.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple device of such construction as to be applied beneath the bottom of the sash and between the window-beads, and defeat the entrance of air at that point as effectually as the sash itself when fully lowered, but which, when in place, shall effect a separation of the top bar of the lower sash from the bottom bar of the upper, and admit the air above the heads of persons occupying the apartment, whereby they are protected from direct drafts and the room is efficiently ventilated. To this end I have devised a bar, by preference hinged in the middle, as shown, and provided with a flange adapted to close against the side of the lower sash-bar. y
In the drawings, A and B are respectively the upper and lower sashes. I) is the top bar of the lower sash, and a the bottom bar of the upper sash; and O is the base-bar of the sash. c e are the beads. The ventilator-bar c is hinged or pivoted in the center, and is provided with a flangeor bead, d, adapted to rest against the inside of the sash, whereby any currents of air which may enter between the 'ing the apartment.
sash and bar are directed vertically on enter- The meeting edges of the flange d atfis atone sideof the joint between the parts of the bar 0, so as to obstruct the entrance of air at the joint. In the form. shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the joint or hinge is at the side of the bar 0. In the form shown in Fig. 4 the hinge i is at the top or bottom, and in the form shown in Fig. 3 it is in the center, a pin, h, serving as the pivot. The flanges (I stop short of the ends of the bare by about the thickness of the sash-beads e.
To place the device in position, the sashisraised, and the parts of the bar 0 are suftieiently inclined to admit of the ends being brought between the heads when the bar isstraightened out and the sash is shut down closely upon it, as shown in Fig. 1. As close and tight a joint is formed at the bottom of the sash as if the same were fully down in the window-frame, so that there are no drafts at the bottom, the air finding access to the apartment between the parts a and b.
, Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A window-ventilator consisting of a bar adapted, when placed in position, to separate the meeting bars of the sash, and provided with a. flange, d,'as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The wimlow-ventilator herein described, consisting of the bar 0, made in two parts, hinged or pivoted together, and having the flange cl and overlappingjoint f, as set forth.
Witnesses: HUGH H. CRAIG.
