CONTAINER HAVING SLIDABLE. CLOSURE Filed May 24, 1946 Patented Jan. 15, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,582,360 CONTAINER HAVING SLIDABLE CLOSURE rgi ia B.- She id n, Qhicaem Ill- Application May 24,, 1946, Serial No. 672,089
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to face powder containers such as boxes, compacts and the like, which are ordinarily of suificient thinness or cross section to fit within a womans purse or bag.
This invention further relates to an improvement in face powder containers, compacts and the like, which are streamlined tobetter fit a purse or bag and which may be made of suitable material such as a plastic of relatively lightweight and attractive appearance with accommodation for powder or a powder box or container and a puff and has a movable window for exposing the powder or just the desired small portion or area thereof for application of the puff to acquire powder thereon for use, without spilling or wasting the powder.
Powder compacts, vanity boxes and the like which women are accustomed to carrying with them ordinarily have a movable lid. The lids are ordinarily of the friction fitting type and have a peripheral fiange which fits over the upper rim of the container. The lids are often hinged to the container and have space within the lid for housing a mirror and a powder puff, chamois or tissue for use in applying the powder.
The attractiveness and convenience of the container has a marked effect on the saleability of the powder but this is reduced due to other objectionable features. One of the greatest defects which I have noted in face powder containers of the type specified is that when the lid is removed and the whole area of the box open for use, too much powder is taken up by the chamois or tissue and it is thereby wasted and the powder is so light and fluffy that it spills out during use and contaminates the purse or bag. The spilling of powder, during use or when the lid is improperly applied is very annoying and wasteful.
It is the object of my invention to provide a container having an auxiliary cover which is ordinarily not removed during use of the powder and which is provided with means for rendering a small area of the powder available for use. It is further my object to provide a container which is substantially leak proof and spill proof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a container having an auxiliary cover, which is not removed during the use of the powder, but which may be removed for reuse with the same container after refilling the latter or with another container, in which case, it may be separately made and supplied for use therewith, or it may be incorporated in the container or compact in the manufacture or assembly thereof before or after filling.
The above objects and other objects resulting in economy and attractiveness of appearance I accomplish by that certain combination and arrangement of parts of which I'have shown a preferred embodiment.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a powder compact or container with the movable lid open.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my auxiliary cover.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, but with the window closed.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of another form of powder compact or container in accordance with the invention, with the sliding window open.
Fig. 6 is a top plan view thereof partly broken away.
Fig. '7 is a longitudinal section taken on the line l-'l of Fig. 6.
Figs. 8 and 9 are transverse sections taken on the lines 8-8 and 9- of Fig. 6, and
Fig. 10 is a fragmentary transverse section cor responding to Fig. 8, but showing a modified form or alternate construction of window guide means.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, the container or compact may be of paper, cardboard, metal or plastic and as illustrated is of the flat type having a round peripheral side wall I extending up from a bottom wall 2. The container is provided with a movable cover or lid. As shown hinged to the container 3 is the lid or cover 4 which fits over the upper edge of the side wall. The lid l may have space inside or underneath as indicated, or otherwise as desired or common in the art, for housing a mirror 4a, suitably held in position as by means of a retaining ring or bezel 4b.
Fitting within the container is a disc, auxiliary cover or lid generally indicated at 5 having a window 6, preferably made of some flexible transparent-material such as Celluloid, slidably fitting in an opening 1 in the disc or auxiliary lid or cover formed thereby. This disc 5 is removably or permanently secured in position in any desirable way. It may be comparatively rigid or slightly flexible so as to fit tight or snugly within the container and be held by friction and be forced or snapped into position or fastened within the container at its surrounding or circumscribing edge within the inner surface of the lateral wall I which together with the disc 5 may be of any desired shape providing they correspond at the inside of the-container. The transparency makes guideways la at the sides of the window opening for the opposite edges of the window 5 and a thin space lb between the discs within which the transparent window 6 will fit and slide back and forward from closed to open position and vice versa. The outer ends of the openings and win-' dow 6 may be arcuate and the openingsi concentric with and spaced from the circumscribing or peripheral edges of the discs 9 to form spaced rim portions 9a to receive and retain the outer or arcuate end of the window. In this way, a leak proof joint is formed.
In use, the container is removed from the bag and the lid opened. With the lid open the auxiliary cover or lid prevents any powder from spilling out. When the user wishes to apply some of the powder, the window is pushed back and a small space is available through which the puff, chamois or tissue may be inserted to obtain a minimum or just the quantity of powder desired and without wasting or spilling the same.
When the container is empty, the auxiliary cover or lid may be removed and inserted in another container or the original container or compact may be refilled. While, ordinarily, the disc' or auxiliary cover has a friction fit with the face powder container so as to be removable for reuse in the same or another container, itmay be incorporated in the container or compact during its manufacture.
The auxiliary lid or cover illustrated is formed from paper but other relatively stiff or semi-stiff material may be used in a similar structure.
Referring to the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 to 10, inclusive, the compact or container is adapted to receive powder, a powder cake, or a compact or powder box of commercial. form, which may be of paper, cardboard, metal or other suitable material, and consists of a casing H in the shape shown having a lateralor side wall l2 extending up from and formed integral with or secured to a preferably flat bottom wall l3. The lateral or side wall 12 is substantially U-shaped with tapered or downwardly extending ends I4 formed by convexlycurving the top corners or edges of said ends with the bottom edges terminating in spaced relation to the adjacent end of the bottom wall l3 to form a projecting portion 15 on which a top wall or cover 16 is formed or fitted and secured in conformity with the ends and edges of the lateral wall and flush or even with the adjacent end of the bottom wall. As shown, the top wall or cover 16 fits on the top edge of the lateral or side wall and extends downwardly at I! to engage at its bottom edge with the projecting portion 15, so that the outer surface of the top wall conforms. with the adjacent end of the bottom wall. These parts may be of any suitable material, such as a plastic, for instance, Celluloid, ivory, metal, cardboard or otherwise and may be molded or the parts described secured together to form smoothv surfaces, as by a waterproof cement, at the jgints;
to form a strong and attractive structure whether molded, fused or otherwise constructed. Thus, the receptacle shown is relatively flat with a transverse semi-circular or rounded end and is vertically tapered at the opposite end, which is rounded or convexed vertically, preferably at the top to correspond with the ends M of the lateral wall I2 but straight transversely normal to the parallel legs or sides of the lateral or side wall.
The top wall or cover l6 has an opening it, preferably circular, although it may be of any other suitable shape and a window ii? of some flexible transparent material, such as Celluloid, Lumarith or the like, the same as in the first form, slidably fits the opening in the top. The opening I8 is concentric with and spaced from the peripheral or arcuate ends or edges of the top wall or cover I6 and lateral wall 12 to form a channel and spaced rim portions l8a to snugly receive the outer arcuate end 19a of the window 19 to close the opening and prevent powder leakage.
In the construction shown in Figs. 5 to- 9, inclusive, channels or guideways 26 are provided at the inner surface of the semi-circular or curved end as between rim portions [8a and branching therefrom or extending along the sides immediately beneath the top wall l6. These channels may be formed of parallel strips as seen in Figs. 7 and 8 made separate from or formed into shape with the lateral wall and extending down in conformity with the downwardly curved or tapered ends 14 to the top surface of the bottom wall It. The window I9 is shaped correspondingly with the container II that is, with a semi-circular or arcuate end and a straight transverse opposite end, but shorter than the container or casing H and the semi-circular or convexly arcuate or rounded end thereof fits in and conforms to the channel at the semi-circular or convexly rounded end and rim portions l8a of the container to form a leak-proof joint. An upwardly projecting lug 2| is provided on the window to form a handle for manipulation thereof and may engage the back edge of the opening I8 to limit the opening of the window or, the straight transverse inner or back end of the window may engage the top surface of the bottom wall at the inner ends of the channels for this purpose, although ordinarily the window is not opened this wide in order to secure a Sllfi'lClBIlt quantity of powder by applying a puff or chamois thereto unless the powder has been exhausted at the front, in which event, when the powder is in cake form or contained in a box, container or compact, it may be turned to replenish the supply at the front. As illustrated,
the lug 2| is arcuate and its ends will engage the back edge of the opening, as shown in Fig. 6, since the lug has its convex side concentric with or conforming to the arc of the convex end, but
' spaced therefrom, and the concave side disposed toward the back. Also, a vertical or inclined transverse partition wall 22 may be provided across the inside of the container between the bottom, top and side walls with its top edge terminating at the channels 20 in spaced relation to the top wall to permit the window iii to pass in opening and closing the same and also to reenforce the container and form a compartment 23 at the back. This compartment may take a powder puff or the like, which may be accessible through a door opening 24 at one side for convenient use. Also, as shown in Fig. 10, the lateral or side wall including the curved end and the 7 sides as far as the partition 22 may be thickened or reenforced as at 25, the reenforcement being at the inside, and grooved as at 26 to form channels or guideways for the window. To additionally render the container leak-proof at the window or closure, the rounded end of the channel or guideway may receive a packing or spring strip or wire 21 with its ends anchored in the lateral wall as at 29 or otherwise fastened. This packing spring or strip interfits with the edge of the window l9 to assist in forming a leak-proof joint or connection, as shown in Fig. 9.
In the use of this form of the invention, a powder puff, chamois' or tissue which may be acquired from the compartment 23 is applied to the powder after opening the window to expose the same. The window is opened to a proper degree, depending upon the quantity of powder desired, and in this way the acquiring of surplus powder is avoided, as well as waste and spilling thereof. When the window is closed, the powder cannot escape into a purse or bag.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In an elongated powder box having a first compartment and a second compartment longitudinally aligned, said first compartment having an opening in its top, and both of said compartments having guideways underlying the top walls thereof, the second compartment having a top wall extending in curved formation from a point adjacent the level of the top wall of said first compartment to the bottom of said powder box; a flexible cover slidably mounted in said guideways, movable to open and close the opening in saidfirst compartment, and when in open position being accommodated in said guideways beneath the top of said second compartment.
