OIL BURNER Filed Nov. 1, 1948 Vice [1.
Patented Dec. 4, 1951 OIL BURNER Anders Gunnar Edvinson and Biirje Konrad Danielsson,
Goteborg,
Sweden, assignors to Aktiebolaget Gotaverken, Goteborg, Sweden, a corporation of Sweden Application November 1, 1948, Serial No. 57,777 In Sweden November 19, 1947 1 Claim.
This invention relates to oil burners of the type in which ahead of an atomizer for the fuel there is provided a rotatable screening and catching device by means of which a controllable portion of the fuel jet is prevented from entering the combustion zone outside the burner. In burners of this type, the oil tends to form relatively large drops at the edge of the screening device which drops are thrown into the furnace in which they are diflicult to burn completely.
The invention has for its object to eliminate the above named inconvenience and to provide an oil burner in which complete combustion is ensured.
We attain this object by mechanism illustrated in the annexed drawing which shows a sectional view of our improved burner.
In the diagrammatically indicated furnace wall I there is provided an opening for a burner having an outer casing 2. The burner has an atomizer 3 of a construction known per se, said atomizer being disposed at the end of a longitudinally displaceable oil supply pipe 4. The pipe 4 is surrounded by a tubular shaft 5 which is mounted in a ball bearing I provided in a stationary part 6. Suitable means (not shown) may be provided for rotating the shaft 5, such as, for instance, disclosed in Patent No. 2,374,290 of April 24, 1945. At the free end of the shaft 5 there is provided a drum-shaped screening and catching device ll having an opening 8 through which the oil jet cone coming from the atomizer 3 can enter the combustion chamber of the furnace. The screening device I! also has openings 9 through which the caught oil is thrown out into the interior of the stationary part 5 whence it is withdrawn through a drain pipe I0. Combustion air is supplied through the annular s ace H between the stationary part 6 and the casing 2.
As will be seen from the drawing, the opening 8 is tubular and has conical walls shaped like a truncated cone l2 the cross sectional area of which increases in the direction of travel of the oil jet. In the embodiment illustrated, the conical face l2 converges towards a point on the axis of rotation which point in all positions of the atomizer 3 is located ahead thereof. Consequently, the outer portion of the jet cone from the atomizer 3 will be cut off by the relatively sharp ed e I 3 of the cone l2 directed towards the atomizer 3. According to the position of the atomizer 3, a minor or greater portion of the oil jet cone will be caught by the screening de- Oil which may adhere to the conical face I 2 will be squeezed, under the action of the centrifugal force, so as to form a thin layer which is spread outwardly towards the outer end of the part 6 where the conical face by means of a smoothly rounded portion l4' merges into the outer face of the screening device [1. The oil layer will slide on said outer face which is shaped as a truncated cone having its base directed against the direction of flow of the oil cone. The oil layer will be thrown out from said conical face at the latest when it comes to that portion of the outer face of the screening device 11, which has the greatest diameter, that is to say near openings 9 where it is caught by the inner wall of the stationary part 6. The outer end 6a of said part is devised as a conical screen which according to the embodiment illustrated is elongated to a place near the rounded portion I4.
What we claim is:
In an oil burner, an axially displaceable oil atomizer for spraying oil in a jet cone, a rotatable oil catching device located ahead of said atomizer in position to catch a, controllable portion of the oil jet cone, said catching device having a tubu ar central oil jet passage, extending longitudinally of the axis of rotation of said catching device and being shaped like a truncated cone the cross section area of which increases in the direction of flow of the oil jet, the conical face of said truncated cone converging towards a point on the axis of rotation which point in all positions of the atomizer is located ahead thereof, the wall at the end of said passage remote from said atomizer being smoothly rounded and merging outwardly into a conical outer face having a rearwardly increasing diameter and an inner inclined face merging with the conical face to form a sharp edge extending inwardly toward the atomizer, and means for withdrawing oil caught by said catching device.
