STRAW-STACKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,556, dated May 9, 1882.

To all irhom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY GonTELYow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairland, in the county of Shelby and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Straw-Stackers; and I do` declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of thcinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- 1o pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification. My invention relates to means for carrying and distributing straw to stacks,as it is delivered from'the apron of thrashin g-machines 5 and it consists in details of construction and arrangement of parts that will be hereinafter more fully set fortb'in the specification and 2O claims and pointed out in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my device. Figs. 2 and 4, front elevations; Fig. 3, a side elevation of deviceswhen folded; Figs. 5 and 6, a plan view and section, respectively, ofthe turn-table, and Fig. 7 a detail view ofthe de- -vice for adjusting the pulleys.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and compact portable device that is 3o easily and quickly put in position by one man, and one in which all cognlieels are dispensed with, thus removing` all danger of clogging and breaking.
The device is particularly adapted for use in connection with the portable thrashers now in general use. i Referring more particularly to the draw ings, A B represent the running-gear, having mounted thereon a folding derriek made in two 4o parts, D D', hinged at d, and provided with fastening-hooksor other suitable holding devices, b. These uprights are let into the crosspiece C, secured to the sides A by bands c, the cross-piece being notched or shouldered for that purpose, so that -t-he piece G can easily turn. The uprights are held `in position and prevented from swaying by the guy-ropes F. Secured to and supported by the frame `A is a folding frame, hinged to A at u', and held in 5o its upright position by catches T, secured to a fixed vertical frame, S, on'the runninggear. This frame supports a turn-table consisting of two circular pieces, M N, one of whichturns about the other. A shaft, L, carrying a pulley, P, is secured to the outer or movablepiece, N, by4 straps 7s', and enters the upright pieces K, which support the receiving end of the strawcarrier. This shaft L also passes through the outer pulley, O. The pulleyP is connected by a band, P', to a pulley, Q, on the shaft X, which 6o passes through the pulley R., connected by a band with the thrasher engine or motor. Thus the same power that operates the thrasher operates the stacker. The upright-piecesV of the folding frame are slotted for the reception 65 and play of springs uz, upon which the shaft X rests. (See Fig. 7.) This shaft (and therefore the pulley Q) is adjusted vertically by means of hook pieces V', which pass through the cross-bar V of the folding frame, and have 7o underneath a rubber washer, W, heldin place by a nut. If at any time the baud P becomes too tight or too loose, it may be adjusted by unscrewing or screwing up the nut against the washer, which acts to draw down or let up the pieces V and shaft Xwithout stopping the machine, the springs u2 acting to force up the shaft when the nut is loosened, and also act as compensators for any sudden jerking or pulling of the band on the pulley. 8o
The straw-carrier is supported by the uprights K on the shaft L, and consists of two pieces, I I', hinged together at t', and provided with the ordinary apron, J. The receiving end of the carrier is provided with a shield, J', to S5 prevent the straw from the thrasher falling from the sides. The apron J is aetuatedvby rollers O on a shaft connected with pulley O', which in turn is actuated by a band ruiming over pulley 0, vwhich is actuated by pull-ey P, 9o asbefore described. The inner end of the t carrier is supported by the piecesK, while the outer end is rsupported by a rope, F, attached to a bail, H, pivotally secured to l by hooks When the device is to be put in operation I move it near the rear end ot' the thrasher and raise the derrick, securing the foldedpieces by the hooks b, then draw taut the guy-ropes Fl and hold them fast by pins driven in the ground. Next wind up cord F, so as to raise the outer end, I, of the carrier until it turns on its hinges and extends outwardly, the cord F being loosened as it commences to turn on the hinges. Next raise the turn-table by drawing forward on the carrier, and secure it in a vertical position by means of the hooks or fastenings T. The carrier can now be raised to any desired inclination by means of the winding-drum, which is held in position by any ratchet or stop device secured to the drum. The carrier of the thrasher discharges between the derrick-posts on the apron J ofthe strawcarrier. The straw can now be carried in any direction for stacking by simply moving the end I of the carrier, which turns the disk N of the turn-table, by means of the pieces K and shaft L. As the stack increases in height it is simply necessary' to wind up cord F, and raisethe carrier as described, and when out of reach of the hand ot' the pitcher it can be moved by the fork. The end of the carrier is sufficiently removed from the derrick to give the carrier free play from side to side.
Now, when it is desired to stop work the operation of fclding the several parts is as follows: Unloosen cord F and allow the carrier to descend to the ground. Then unloosen hooks T, which permits the folding frame with table to fall forward. This also causes the part I of the carrier to be carried forward. Next wind up cord F until the carrier-piece 1 is raised and turns over on I, as first described. Then unhook the pieces D', and they will fall forward. Next unloosen the guy-ropes F and the pieces I) will fall backward, and all will assume the relative positions shown in Fig. 3.
It will thus be seen that my device can be raised or lowered and operated by one man, and as the several parts-viz., the table and the apron-are actuated by pulleys withoutthe intervention of cog-wheels, there is no danger of clogging, and breakage is reduced to a minimum. This is a great advantage not only iu practical use, but in rst cost ot manufacture and in subsequent repairs. It is very easy to supply a band-pulley; but a broken cog-wheel necessitates taking the machine to a shop for repairs, and castings are always expensive. The several parts are light and strong and the mechanism is very simple.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a straw-stacker, the combination of a hinged foldable derrick, the uprights thereof being made in two pieces, a carrier, a windingdruin, a pulley, and a rope, substantially as and forthe purpose set forth.
f 2.` In a straw-stacker mounted upon and in combination with a hinged foldable frame, a turn-table, as described.
3. The combination, in a straw-stacker, ot' a hinged foldable frame, a turn-table, andthe runninggear, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, in a straw-stacker, ot' a carrier, a turn-table, a foldable supportingframe, and the running-gear, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination, in a straw-stacker, of a foldable frame, the running-gear, and two circular disks, one of which is movable about the other, substantially as shown and described.
6. A turn-table for straw-stackers, comprisi n g a foldable frame and disks, as described, in lcombination with two pulley-shafts, one of said pulley-shafts passing through the foldable frame and the other being secured to one ofthe disks, as shown and described.
7. The combination, in a straw-stacker, ofa pulley-shaft, X, the foldableframe, and suitable means whereby said shaft and the pulleys connected therewith are adjustably mounted in said frame, substantially as and for the purpose described.
8. The combination, in astraw-stacker, ota turn-table and a carrier made in two pieces, supported by and moving with the turn table, as described, a foldable derrick, pulleys, ropedrum, and rope,'whereby the outer piece ot' the'carrier may be raised and lowered by said rope, substantially as set forth.
0. In a straw-stacker, the combination of the turn-table provided with two disks, and thedriving-shaft, the running-gear, the carrier, made in two pieces, I l, a rope, F, a pulley, drum, and the derrick, substantially as and for the purpose described.
10. In a portable stra\v-stacker, the combination of a folding derrick madein two parts, a folding frame, a turn-table, the ruiminggear, and a carrier made in two parts, the lower end of the derrick, when not raised, being adapted to fall back and rest on a support on the running-gear, the upper end falling forward and resting on the carrier, the outer end ofthe carrier falling forward on the inner end, and the table and frame folding forward on the running-gear, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
