Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
s. T. McDoUGaLL, or NEW YORK, N. r.
TRAVELERS TICKET-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,750, dated October 11, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. T. MCDOUGALL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Travelers Ticket-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, where- 1n Figure l, is a side view of my improved ticket holder, showing the several parts. Fig'. 2, shows the instrument wit-h a railroad check inserted. Figs. 3 and 4C, are views of a modification of the same invention.
My invention consists in the use of a clamp, substantially such as hereinafter described, so constructed that it will readily secure any ticket, tag or badge placed within its grasp, combined with a pin similar to that used for securing shawl or breastpins, or any equivalents thereof by which such clamp may be securely and readily attached to the cloak shawl or other article of dress on the person of the wearer, as hereinafter set forth, and otherwise so made, as hereinafter specified, that it may be readily detached from its place when not needed; and the object of this invention is to provide those persons who are called upon to travel by railroad and other conveyances, or appear from any reason in public places where a ticket check tag-badge or other insignia is required to be kept in View, with a perfectly reliable, as well as compact and convenient instrument with which to secure to their dress in the desired place such ticket check or badge, the subject of this invention being designed as a substitute for the very unreliable means now depended on of inserting such ticket in the hat band, if it be a railroad check, or if it be a badge, of the use of ordinary pins.
To enable others to make and use my invention I will now describe its construction and operation.
In the drawing annexed the same letters refer to corresponding parts in all the figures.
A in Fig. 1, is the plate or main body of the instrument, which carries the several operative or moving parts.
B is a pin hinged to the plate A. Said plate is provided with an open eye b, forming a catch for the point of the said pin, common to all shawl pins, &c. The plate A, has a projection o, on its back, which furnishes the fulcrum for a lever C. Under one end of the lever there is a spring c, the object of which is to force the opposite end hard against the plate so as grasp any article placed between said lever C, and plate A. The clamp `thus formed of the lever and plate, is provided with a security additional to that of the pressure produced by the spring c', in a small pin z', which is made to pass through a small hole la, in the clamping-end of the lever, so that any ticket inserted in the clamp will be penetrated by the pin which if long enough will also pass entirely through the ticket and enter the hole in the lever, thus insuring security. Instead of a pin and a hole the lever may have several small teeth, so as to make a roughness; and these teeth may be inclined toward the fulcrum of the lever, so as to prevent the ticket or check from slipping outward, see Fig. 4L; or, the jaws of the clamp may not have any teeth, but will not, of course, then hold the ticket with that certainty which may be depended on, in the arrangement above described.
Other means will suggest themselves to the intelligent mechanic, both of fastening the ticket to the holder, and of attaching the latter to wearing apparel; but any deviation in detail from the means herein described and shown is entirely immaterial, so long as the principle set forth in the recital of invention above is retained, viz: an instrument combining two functions`a capability of holding a ticket or check in such a manner that it may be easily detached therefrom without injurious mutilation and a facility of being readily secured to the dress of a person so that it may be easily and readily removed or detached therefrom.
The operation of the instrument or holder is as follows: By pressing together the jaws C, and A, at that end where the spring is, the ticket may be inserted under the small hole 7c, which being pressed upon, will force the small pin z' through the ticket and into said hole n the lever; and the holder is then nary shawl-pin, the Whole constructed and attached to any article of dress after the operating as above set forth, for the purmanner of an ordinary shawl pm. pose speoied.
What I claim as my invention and desire S. T. MCDOUGALL. 5 to Secure by Letters Patent s, Witnesses:
The level` C, spring c', point i, or their equivalents, in combination, with an ord- WM. H. BERTLING, HARRY SMITH.
