Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. GUY, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
BEDSTEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,732, dated October 11, 1859.
To all whom @t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. GUY, of Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification.
The nature of my invent-ion relates to the construction of bedsteads so as to employ the cross-rail self-tightening arrangement in connection with the heads of the ordinary form.
In reference to the accompanying drawings Figure l, is a side elevation of my improved bedstead. Fig. 2, is a plan with the head rest removed. Fig. 3, is an elevation of the head rest alone.
The heads consisting of the posts A, and rails B, are of the ordinary form and may be made as ornamental as is desirable. The frame consists of the cross rails C, D, and bars E, the bars E, being framed and fastened to the ends of the cross rails. The cross rails C, D, are pivoted or jointed together at the point where they cross each other by any suitable pin or bolt, F. On the lower ends of the cross rails C, and D, is secured a small hook-shaped piece of metal G, of suitable shape or form to set into a socket or mortise in the projecting part of the small plate H, which is fitted and made fast to the post A. The piece G, has a hole in its end through which a pin is inserted to prevent its getting out of the socket in plate II. On the posts A, are secured the slides I, running vertically. To the bars E, are securely fixed small plates J, these plates J, project outward from the bars E, and have a notch or groove in their side which is fitted to the slides I.y so as to slip up and down freely upon them. The cord, wire K, or other material to support the bedding is attached to the bars E, when elevated to the position represented in the drawing so that the weight of the cross-rails C, D, the bedding &c, pressing downward will cause a corresponding tension upon the cord or wire K.
The head rest shown in Figs. l, and 3, has the projecting ratchets L, extending outward from its lower side the notches in which catch upon the pins M, in the rails O, and D, which with the bars E constitute the frame, while the lower rail P, rests upon the top of the frame. Then it is desired to depress the head rest the lowestnotches in ratchets L, are placed upon the pins M, and when it is required to elevate it the notches farther up are used.
Having thus described my invention what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
The arrangement of the frame C, D, E with reference to the heads B, A, and their connection by means of the oints H, G, and slides I, and plates J, or their equivalents substantially as described.
In testimony of which invention I have hereunto set my hand.
J. R. GUY.
IVitnesses I. S. CHRISTIE, E. CRossLAND.
