I 2 2/. 1 WITNESSES WINVENTOR 3 6m f UNITED STATES PATENT Gretna.
JOHN M. RILEY, OF KEARNEY, NEW JERSEY.
PUNCHlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,240, dated May 2, 1882.
Application filed September 30, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN M. RILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kearney, in the countyof Hudson and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved punching-machine, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
My invention relates to punching-machines of that class in which two or more punches are used to effect the simultaneous punching of any desired object at two or more points and from different sides or directions.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby an object may be punched out at two more or places by the same number of punches workin g simultaneously toward a common center.
It has also for its object the provision of means whereby the several punch-slides used may be connected to a single treadlerod or other suitable actuating device.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, A represents a work bench or table, on which is supported the punching-machine B by legs a a. A die, G, of form adapted to the particular class of work which is to be operated upon, is secured to the base B of the machine, at or near its center. by screws 0 c.
D D D D are guide-plates secured to the base on opposite sides of the die O,formin g dovetailed ways for the punch-slides E E. These slides are provided with the removable punches e c, which register with holes 01 d in the sides of the die G. The slides E E extend beyond the ends of the base B,and have downwardlyprojecting shoulders F F, in which set-screws f f work, the object of said set-screws being to limit the inward movement of slides E E.
Depending from the slides E E, and projecting through an opening,b b, in the base B, are two flat blocks, G G. These blocks are set in slots g g in the slides E E, and are held in place by fastening-plates h h, secured to said blocks by screws t 2'.
Attached to the base B, on the under side thereof and below the slides E E, are hangers H H. Between said hangers, and attached thereto by pivots I. 7c, are two levers, L L. These levers have upwardly-projecting arms I l, which are provided with round heads an m, fitting in sockets n a in the blocks G G and forming a socket-joint therein.
M M are adjustable weights on the outer ends of the levers L L. These weights are intended to counterbalance the levers L L and assist in withdrawing the punches c e" from the die. The levers L L lap over' at their inner ends, and are attached to the head (0 of the treadle-rod P by straps 0 0.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The work which is to be punched having been placed in position on the base B, the treadlerod 1? is depressed and the inner ends of the levers L L brought down toward the table A. The arms I Z move the blocks G G toward the die, thus causing the punches e c to effect their intended purpose simultaneously. After the punching has been completed the rod P is released and the levers L L return to their normal position.
It will be observed that the punches move forward toward the die on the same line, and that the holes are punched at points which are exactly opposite. one another. This is of great importance in certain classes of work-as, for instance, in punching the rivet-holes in satchel and pocket-book frames or clasps, for hollow keys of accordions, &c.
When it is desired to change the character of the workas, forinstance, from pocket-book to satchel frames-the die and punches are removed and replaced by others of a suitable character. The punch-slides are th en adjusted on the blocks, so as to give a-suitable range of motion to the punches, and the set-screws fixed to limit the inward movement of the slides and their contained punches.
I have described and shown a punch adapted to punch two holes in opposite sides of a piece of work ,but I do not limit myself to this construction, as the punch-slides and their actuating devices may be increased in. number without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, I claim-- 1. In a punching-machine, the combination of the punch-slides E E, having the slotsgg, with the adjustable blocks G G and. levers L L, all constructed and arranged substantially as described.
2. In a punching-machine, the combination of the actuating-levers L L and blocks G G, secured to the slides EE and adjustable therein, with the removable die 0, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a punching-machine, the slides E E, having the shoulders F F and set-screwsff, in combination with the adjustable blocks Gr G and levers L L, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. In apunchin g-machinehaving separatelyadjustable punch-slides, and actuating-levers for causing the punch-slides to simultaneously operate upouoppositc sides of a die, the combination, with such punch-slides and actuatin g-levers, of separately-adj ustable counterbal- 20 ance-weights, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. In a punching-machine, the combination of the slides E E and blocks G G, adjustable in said slides, with the lovers L L, having arms I Z, Weights M M, and straps 0 0 to attach the said lovers to the treadle-rod O, the said parts being constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I 30 have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of August, 1881.
