COMBINED SNAP AND BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,143, dated May 2, 1882;

- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roseville, in the county of Warren and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin aOolnbined Snap andBuckle, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to a combined buckle and snap-hook; and it consists in the novel construction of the several parts, all of which will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying draw ings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device having a strap attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same in section. Fig. 3 discloses a view of the under side of the device and strap.

The letter A represents the strap, and A the lapped end thereof. F is the buckle proper. D is. a cross-piece, to which is attached the tongue E. D is another cross-piece, serving as a rest for the loose end of the tongue E. By means of said cross-pieces and tongue the strap A A is firmly secured to the buckle without being sewed. B is the snap, and O the hook. G is the coiled s )Xl l l has 3 ing arms. The one marked I extends along the shank of the hook to the slot T, the point of the arm being bent and turned into said slot. The other arm, R, is turned upward and holds the snap B in position. h is a rivet passing through the rear end of the shank of the hook and snap, securing one to the other. P represents a longitudinal slot in the shank of the hook. n is a recess in the 40 snap B to receive the end of arm 1%.

One of the features of my device that I wish to direct attention to is the manner in which the spiral spring is secured and held in positron. It will be seen that said spiral fits in a recess in the shank of the book. When the snap B 1s placed in position and secured by the rivet h about two-thirds of the circumference of the spiral is encireled,by which means it IS prevented from slipping out of place, and can only bedisplaced by removing the snap. The pro ecting arms of said spiral also serve to firmly secure it. It must therefore be ap parent that the snap-bar performs a double -office-namely, connecting at one end with the hook, and at the other (its rear end) securing the spiral. In case the spiral should become broken, it can be readily replaced by a new one by removing the snap.

Another feature of the hook is the longitudinal slot in the shank thereof. By this means water and dirt are prevented from accumulating in said hook. The spiral recess, also being open, is not liable to receive and retain those elements. The spiral snap-hooks with which I am familiar are liable to become inoperative during the winter months by reason of water freezing therein. Hence my longitudinal slot and open recess.

By the use of my device a line or hitchingstrap can be easily and quickly adjusted thereto without'the intervention of a billet or the necessity of sewing.

Having thus described my in vention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a combined snap-hook and buckle, a spiral spring having two projecting arms, one fitting in a depression in the under side of a snap-bar to hold said snap in position, the

2. The buckle F, consisting ofa frame, nearly square, having two cross-pieces, D and D, and the tongue E, by means of which the strap A, having bent end A, is secured thereto, in combination with the hook 0, cast integral therewith, and provided with the recess K, longitudinal slot P, and circular slot J, the spiral G,having arms I and R, and the snap B, having a part of its under surface concaved and convexed, respectively,,the same being secured .to the shank of the hook by means of rivet h,

substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
