The present invention relates to a radio receiver dial indicator and dial indicator drive mechanism.
3 Claims. (Cl. 250-14) The primary object of my invention is to provide a novel arrangement of a radio receiver tuning mechanism and station indicator dial.
Another object of my invention is to provide a dial drive mechanism which is rugged and compact.
In general, my invention is accomplished by mounting the station indicator dial, which, as shown, is in the form of an annulus, in a bracket which is fastened to the speaker. The indicator dial is visible through a transparent portion of the radio cabinet so that as the tuning dial is actuated, the indicator dial rotates and the desired radio station is brought into alignment with an appropriate marker on the casing.
Other objects and many of the attendant advantages of my invention will be readily appreciated as the same becomes better understood by reference to the following detailed description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of the radio receiver in which my invention is incorporated;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the dial drive mechanism;
Figure 3 is a side view of the speaker and dial mounting;
Figure 4 is a front elevation of the system; and
Figure 5 is a side view of the spring assembly.
Like reference characters indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown a radio receiver consisting of a chassis 3 and its components and a casing 5, which covers the chassis and rests on the chassis as a base. On the chassis is mounted a radio speaker 8 to which is fixed a bracket or dial pan 2 by means of bolts 1. The back surface 9 of the bracket or dial pan is provided with cut out portions 9 to provide three arms. radiating from the center of the bracket. Studs l6 and it are arranged in circular array on the arms IS. The stud i6 is slidably mounted in the arm [9 and is biased out wardly by a spring I l. The studs carry rollers 6 on which a dial-bearing annulus 4 is rotatably mounted, the annulus being retained in position due to the action of the spring H on the adjustable roller 16. Such spring forces the adjustable roller outwardly and thereby maintains the annulus on the rollers.
The annulus is provided with brackets l8 carrying fasteners 20, to which a circular station indicator dial 2! is attached. The annulus also carries rubber cushions 22 against which the station indicator dial rests. A dial lamp I3 is mounted in the center of the back of the dial pan at the point from which the arms l9 radiate.
A tuning conductor it having a shaft 24 and drum I2 is mounted on the chassis. A tuning knob 28 provided with an extended shaft 30 is arranged on the chassis in such a position that the knob protrudes partly through the casing. A bracket 26 is mounted on th chassis and carries several guide rollers M. A driving belt 32 is passed around shaft 30, drum l2, guide rollers I4, and around the annulus 4, so that rotation of the tuning knob causes corresponding movement of the station indicator dial.
The operation of the dial drive mechanism is as follows: The operator rotates the tuning knob 28 and the shaft 30. As the shaft 30 rotates, the belt 32 causes the drum [2 to rotate and change the tuning of the variable condenser I0. At the same time, due to the fact that the belt 32 passes over the guide rollers l4 and is in operative engagement with the annulus 4, th latter will also be caused to rotate by an amount proportional to that which the tuning condenser is rotated.
Figure 1 shows a casing 5 for the chassis 3. The casing has a partially transparent insert 1 through which the station indicator dial 2| is visible. The transparent insert bears fixed markers I! which stand in cooperative relationship with the station indicator dial so that as the radio receiver is tuned, the desired station a number may be selected by referrin to the appropriate fixed marker. The station indicator dial is provided with a set of station numbers for each band of frequencies to be received and the casing has a marker for each set of numbers.
Obviously, many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible in the light of the above teachings. It is therefore to be understood that within the scope of the appended claims the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically described herein.
I claim:
1. In radio apparatus having a chassis, a tuning device, a casing supported by said chassis, said casing having viewing openings therein, and a speaker mounted on said chassis, said speaker being positioned ibehind said openings, the combination of a bracket carried by said speaker and having a rotatable member, an annulus mounted for rotation on said rotatable member, a station indicator dial held by said annulus and facing said viewing openings so as to be visible therethrough and driving means coupling said tuning means and station indicator dial for synchronously rotating the same, and a fixed indicating element placed on said casing and in cooperative relationship with said indicator dial whereby the tuning of said receiver is indicated on said indicator dial.

In radio apparatus having a chassis, a tuning device and a casing covering said chassis, said casing having viewing openings located in the front thereof, the combination of a speaker mounted on said chassis, said speaker being mounted behind said openings so as to emit sound waves therethrough, a bracket carried by said speaker, a plurality of rollers mounted in circular array on said bracket, an annulus mounted for rotation on said rollers, a station indicator dial held by said annulus and oriented so as. to. be visible through said openings, means mounted in said casing for rotating said annulus in synchronism with said tuning means, and a fixed indicating element carried by said casing and in cooperative relationship with said station REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
