Description

' BOBBY PIN DISPENSER AND SPREADER Filed Nov. 4, 1949 Fig. l6
Inventor l9 I W a Male]:
Patented Oct. 16, 1951 UNITED STATES T OFFICE,
3 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in dispensers and Spreaders for bobby-pins and more particularly to the provision of a holder for a number of bobby-pins whereby the bobby-pins may be conveniently removed therefrom singly and at the same time embodying means for spreading the bobby-pins as the same are removed from the holder.
An important object of the invention i to provide a combined bobby-pin dispenser and spreader and including a holder for a number of pins and which may be used for placing the pins while held in a spread position in the hair.
Another object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the combined dispenser and spreader with a number of bobby-pins in position thereon;
Figure 2 is a perspective View of the front end of the spreader;
Figure 3 is a similar View of the rear thereof;
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on a line 44 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a-perspective view showing one of the bobby-pins held on the spreader in position for placing in the hair;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the opening in the handle of the device for closing the loop of the pin, and;
Figure 7 is a perspective view showing the loop being straightened on the end of the handle of the device.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates the combined dispenser and spreader generally and which is preferably con structed of substantially rigid sheet metal, or other suitable material bent or folded upon itself to provide a handle 6 of substantially fiat elongated form and tapering in cross-section to one longitudinal side edge I to fit in the loop I! of a bobby-pin IS.
The front end of the handle 6 is curved arcuately in the plane of the handle to form a hook 8 of a double'layer or thickness of material and the double layers of 'materialfi and If) at the end of the hook 8 are spread apart or bifurcated to form a spreader I i composed of a pair of parallel blades l2 and i3 spaced apart a distance greater than the width of the loop I! of a bobby-pin and offset outwardly beyond the sides of the hook 8.
The rear end of handle 6 is pointed as shown at M and a longitudinal slot I5 is formed in the handle adjacent its rear pointed end.
In the operation of the device a number of bobby-pins l6 are placed on the rear end of handle 6 as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings and moved along the handle toward the hook 8. The handle 6 is placed in the loop I! at the rear end of the pin and as the foremost pin travels along the hook 8 and rides onto the blades l2 and [3 of the spreader H the jaws I8 and IQ of the pin will be spread apart in the manner as shown in Figure 5 of the drawing. The pin may be held in this position while placing the same in the hair.
Should the jaws l8 and IQ of the pin become sprung apart the same may be repaired or restored to their normal closed position by inserting the loop I! of the pin in the opening 15 and applying pressure on the loop by raising the jaws of the pin so that the loop is closed by the leverage exerted by the sides of the opening IS.
The loo I! will then be closed, but the jaws will still be apart due to the flexibility of the metal and also due to the bend 20 that has been made on the upper jaw during the above closing action. Loop I1 is then placed on pointed end M of handle 6 and while holding both jaws of the pin tightly together the handle 6 is turned in the direction shown by the arrow in Figure 7 of the drawing, which then applies pressure on bend 20 to straighten the same. The jaws will thus be restored to their original tension.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the claimed as new is:
1. A bobby-pin dispenser and spreader comprising a substantially flat handle for slidably supporting the rear ends of a plurality of bobbypins thereon, a hook at one end of the handle onto which a number of the pins are adapted to be moved and held in a dispensing position, and a pair of parallel bobby-pin spreader blades at the outer end of the hook spaced apart and offset outwardly of opposite sides of the hook for spreading the jaws of the pins as the same are moved oil? the hook.
2. A bobby-pin dispenser and spreader comprising a substantially fiat handle for slidably supporting the rear ends of a plurality of bobbypins thereon, and a hook at one end of the handle in the plane thereof and onto which a number of the pins are adapted to be moved and held in a dispensing position, said hook having a bifurcated outer end rising above and below the plane of the hook for spreading the jaws of the pins as the same are moved off the hook.
3. A bobby-pin dispenser and a spreader cominvention, what is prising a substantially fiat handle for slidably supporting a plurality of bobby-pins thereon, a hook at one end of the handle formed of layers of flat material co-planar with the handle and onto which a number of the pins are adapted to be moved and held in a dispensing position, and a pair of laterally spaced flat blades at the outer ends of said layers of material for spreading the jaws of the bobby-pins as the same are moved off the hook.
