Application April 23, 1949, Serial N0.'89,310v f This invention relates to a device for straight- It isa common experience forwood doors, and especially new doors, to warp out of shape. The warping almost always takes place along the opening side which is opposite the side from which the door is hung. When in this condition a door cannot Vproperly t Within its frame when closed, numerous leaks are present, and the general eiciency of the door is greatly impaired. To remedy this defect, it is necessary to remove the door so that it may be placed in a straightening press, or given other remedial treatment. In any event the door is rendered useless during the time it is being repaired and this causes great inconvenience and sometimes hardship.
My invention consists of a device which removes the warping in a door and restores it to its original Iintended shape, and at the same time allows iulfand unobstructed use of the door dur- "f ing the time it is undergoing the straightening process. The inconvenience and hardship normally encountered while repairing a warped door is thus eliminated. -A further advantage is that the average unskilled layman can install and operate the device of my invention, thus eliminating unnecessary costs.
The objects of my invention are t provide a means for straightening a warped door without interfering with the continuous normal use of that door, and to provide a door straightener which is simple, effective, economical, and easy to use. Further objects and advantages will appear from the following description and reference to the drawing wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my dewarping device attached to a door;

As shown in Fig. l, the device of my invention comprises an elongated presser bar B here shown as of channel cross section with inturned anges I I upon its open side. Contact blocks I2 of wood or other suitable material are slidably attached to the bar and protrude laterally from its open side. The contact blocks, here shown as two in number,

A spindle s extends through a selected hole its length to accommodate a pair of nuts .I8,.and elsewhere is squared, as-at I9, where it passes through a conventional latch mechanism which is affixed to the door D which is to be dewarped. The squared ends of thespindle are entered into the sockets of door handles' 22 and 23 toY be se.- cured thereto by screws 24 in the usual way. Anti-friction thrust bearings may be positioned on the spindle, one adjacent the handle 22 and another adjacent the bar B, to olset binding resulting from advance of the nuts I8. In the construction shown, the spindle S is elongated beyond the usual length, and on this account may be regarded as special. Y. A v In practice, the presser bar is placed in an upright position on the `concave side of a warped door D with the contact blocks VI2 facing the door to engagetherewith at widely. spaced points; the regular door handle spindle is removed so that the special elongated spindle S herein described may be substituted therefor, and the threaded portion Il of Vthe spindle is fitted throughone of the holes IB in the bar. By tightening the nuts I3v pressure is exerted inwardly against the bar B and this pressure is transmitted to the door through the blocks I2 at points which may be adjustably spaced apart. In this manner the warped door is pressed back to its original straight, dat shape and held rigidly in that position for as long as is necessary. The bearings 25 reduce friction to such an extent that the door latch may be readily operated from the spindle when rotated in response to turning movement applied to the handle at either end thereof. The contact blocks may be slidingly adjusted so as to exert pressure where it is most needed to accomplish dewarping of the door. An additional means of adjustment is furnished by the plurality of spaced holes I6 at spaced points lengthwise of the presser bar, the spindle S being insertible through any one of them. n
In Fig. 4 the spindle S may be of the usual kind and standard length, .and by replacing the knob at one end with the coupling sleeve a second spindle 3| may be joined operatively thereto. The sleeve is interiorly squared lengthwise to receive the correspondingly shaped ends of the two spindles, and by means of screws 33 which extend transversely through the sleeve for threaded engagement with tapped holes in the spindles, these two parts are united for concurrent rotative movement. A knob 34 Vis quires no special elongated spindle, but merely'- two spindles of the usual kind and length arranged end to end with an intercoupl'ing .means therebetween.
I claim:
1. A door dewarping device comprising an elongated presser bar having a transverse opening therethrough, spaced contact blocks `carried by the bar for engagement with one face of a door at spaced points thereupon, an Yoperating door latch spindle extending through the 'transverse opening of the bar and formed with screw threads adjacent the bar, means for holding 'the spindle against axial movement toward the "bar, 'and a nut screw threaded upon the spindle, 'the nut being provided with means in 'pressure 'engagement with the bar arranged to transmit pressure therethrough to the contact blocks for `application of such pressure to the door face at spaced localized points.

A door dewarping ldevice according to claim `1 wherein the bar is of channel cross section and the contact blocks -have portions entered into the barchannel Aand 'in sliding interlocking engagement therewithwhereby to have capacity for adjustment in position lengthwise of the bar. y 3. A door dewarping device according to claim l'in which the bar is provided with a plurality of transverse openings spaced apart lengthwise thereof `whereby the spindle 'may be extended .through any selected opening to vary the position of the bar relative to the door. l
4. A door dewarping device according to claim 1 in which the contact blocks are carried 'ad- Justably upon vthe bar each to occupy a selected position 'lengthwise thereof, and in which the bar is provided with a plurality of transverse openings spaced apart lengthwise thereof whereby the spindle may be extended through any selected opening to vary the position of the bar relative to the door.
5. A door dewarping device comprising an elongated presser bar mounting spaced contact blocks for engagement with one face of the door, an operating spindle for the door latch, means disposed exteriorly of 'the door latch for holding the spindle in operative'relation therewith, and means forming part of the exteriorly disposed means in thrust engagement with the bar ar- .'ranged to advance the bar with pressure lengthwise of the spindle whereby to transmit pressure through 'the bar to the contact blocks for application to 'the door face at spaced localized points and without interference with oscillatory movements of the spindle for operation of the door latch.
6. A door dewarping device according to claim -5 in which the operating spindle consists of 'two like parts 'intercoupled end to end for 'unitary rotative movement, one part in connection with the door latch and the other part mounting the means in engagement with the presser bar.
7. A door dewarping device according to claim v5 in 'which the operating spindle consists of Vtwo parts arranged end 'to end, one part in 'connection with the door latch and vthe other part mounting the means 'in engagement with the presser bar. and a coupling sleeve interconnecting the-two spindle parts 'in unitary l'relation Aand being disposed between the presser bar and the door.
