2 Claims.
This invention relates to a self feeding package for cosmetic or face powder, and particularly to a service container in which a supply of cosmetic powder is packaged for sale direct to the customer, which is constructed to enable the customer or user to progressively discharge the powder supply through a perforated plate, upon which a powder puff is normally supported within the container, and which combines to prevent accidental spilling of the powder.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an original package container with an internal screw thread and a follower adapted to be progressively lowered to take up space made vacant by the progressive consumption of the powder contents of the package, which may be forced through distributor openings formed in the follower.
Another object of the invention is to provide a container of this type with an inserted screw threaded shell or wall, and to provide means for securing this inserted screw threaded shell in place in the container.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a follower with means for turning the same and means for scraping the wall of the container or its lining, so that no powder residue will be left, and .a full consumption of the contents may be obtained. 7
For further comprehension of the invention, and'of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the package with its cover in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cover removed and exposing the powder puff to view.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, showing the cover removed and the powder puff in position on the dished follower.
Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3, but illustrating a modification of the invention.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detailed view of a portion of Fig. 4 showing the curled upper edge of the container wall. v
Fig. 6 is another view similar to Fig. 3, but illustrating a still further modification of the present invention.

- Fig.9 is a fragmentary bottom perspective view of a modified form of the sifter disc.
The compact, according to the form of the in vention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, includes a container I6 which may be of any external shape or form, but in any case, is provided with a cylindrical inher wall surface, which is formed with a screw thread II, which extends from the upper end thereof to the base or bottom [2, and is integral with the material of which the container I0 is formed. This material may be metal, cast or drawn, or plastic. The base or bottom 12 is formed or provided with supporting feet I3.
In the cylindrical container space a circular follower I4 is threaded into the screw thread II, and for this purpose is formed with an external screw thread to match and engage the screw thread ll. This follower may be constructed with an external ring i5 of plastic or other material, and a sifter disc N5, of plastic or sheet metal, having numerous fine sifter openings 17 therein.
The outer ring I5 is formed with a circular knife edge 15*, adapted to have a scraping effect upon cosmetic powder which has settled on the screw threaded wall, and the sifter disc 16 is located between the lower edge of the external ring l5 and the upper edge thereof, so that a cup or pocket I1 is formed above the sifter disc It. The ring [5 is formed with integral and internal ribs l8, located on opposite sides thereof, so that the follower may be easily turned in the screw threaded container wall by means of a handle, knob, or similar attachment.
A powder puff I9 is adapted to have a snug fit in the follower ring I5 and to seat on the sifter disc I6, so that it will collect all powder which has been discharged through the sifter disc. A cover 20 may be detachably fitted on the container wall, and has a form or shape corresponding to the external form or shape of the container wall.
As the cosmetic powder is progressively consumed, the user turns the follower l4 and thereby causes it to progressively descend and maintain reasonable spaced relation to the supply of cosmetic powder. As the follower is thus threaded downwardly into the container, its wall is wiped of deposited powder and the balance of the supply is prevented from free spilling from the container, as the sifter disc permits only of a limited discharge of the powder, and should the container be dropped only an insignificant amount of powder would be lost.
Figs. 4 and 5 show a modified form of the invention, wherein a container wall 25 is constructed of thin sheet metal or plastic material, and is provided with a bottom 26. A lining shell 21, of sheet metal, is positioned in the container wall 25 and is formed at its inner end with an internal flange 23, which is secured to the bottom 26 by means of rivets or fasteners 29, which provide external feet for the container wall 25. The shell 21 is formed with a rolled screw thread 30, which is engaged by a sheet metal or plastic dished follower 31, the marginal wall 32 of which is formed with internal ribs 32 to aid in turning the same. The upper edge of the container wall 25 is curled over and upon the upper edge of the shell 21, to conceal the lining shell edge.
Figs. 6, 7 and 8 show another modified form of the invention, wherein a sheet metal container wall 33 is formed with a bottom 34, which is raised above the lower edge of the wall 33 by means of the circular grooved connecting portion 35. The lining shell 35 is inserted in the wall 33, and is provided on its lower edge portion with one or more bayonet coupling slots or grooves 31, which are forced into the groove of the connecting portion 35, and establish coupling engagement with the indentation or projection 38, formed on the wall 33. Coupling is made by turning the lining shell 36 in the wall 33, and uncoupling by reverse turning. The upper edge 36 of the lining shell 36 is curled outwardly over the upper edge of the container wall 33, and is obscured by an external bead 39 formed on the wall 33. The lining shell 36 is formed with a rolled screw thread 39, which is engaged by a follower 40.
It is to be understood that the sifter disc I6 may have rounded grater-like teeth or any shape convenient, to fulfill its intended requirement.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is: 1
1. Releasable retaining means in a package for cosmetic powder mounting a tubular lining shell within an outer tubular container, comprising a bottom wall closing the bottom end of the outer container and having a raised central portion surrounded by a channel, the lining shell having its bottom edge disposed in said channel so that powder can be placed within the shell and on the raised, central portion of said shell, means releasably mounting the bottom edge of the lining shell in position in said channel, said shell having its top edge portion bent over the top edge of said tubular container and extended slightly downward along the outer face of said container, and an outwardly extended bead formed on said container at the free edge of the top edge portion of said shell.
2. Releasable retaining means in a package for cosmetic powder mounting a tubular lining shell within an outer tubular container, comprising a bottom wall closing the bottom end of the outer container and having a raised central portion surrounded by a channel, the lining shell having its bottom edge disposed in saidrchannel so that powder can be placed within the shell and on the raised central portion of said shell, said lining shell having its top edge portions bent outward and downward over thetop edges of the outer container, and projections on one wall of said container and extended into said channel, the shell having bayonet slots extended in from its bottom edge and engaged with said projections releasably securing the bottom edge of the shell in position in the channel.
