CYLINDER SLEEVE PULLER Sept. 4, 1951 Filed Sept. 23. 1947 Patented Sept. 4, 195i CYLINDER SLEEVE FULLER George M. Walraven and Raymond Knudsen,
Kenosha, Wis., asslgnors to Snap-n Tools Corporation, Kenosha, Wis., a corporation of Delaware Application September 23, 1947, Serial No. 775,718
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to pullers and more particularly .to cylinder sleeve pullers, although certain features thereof may be employed with equal advantage for other purposes.
It contemplates more especially the provision of improved pullers involving adjustable tiltable engaging jaws that are effectively adapted to the pulling of cylinder sleeves.
Sleeve pullers are becoming increasingly popular owing to the fact that many internal combustion engines now resort to cylinder sleeves as liners rather than provide precision cylinders directly in the engine block. In rebuilding engines, it is only necessary to remove the cylinder sleeves that are press fitted in the cylinder bores and this is readily accomplished with a power puller that is effective in engaging the inner or lower peripheral edge 0f the sleeve prior to exerting an upward power or mechanical pull thereon.
One object of the present invention is to sirnplify the construction and improve the operation of devices of the character mentioned.
Another object is to provide an improved sleeve puller involving tiltable adjustable jaws.
Still another object is to provide an improved jaw member for engaging the lower peripheral edge of a cylinder sleeve prior to extending an upward or outward pull thereon.
A further object is to provide an adjustable sleeve engaging jaw that is tiltably connected to a shank for exerting a pull on a sleeve for removal from its bore in an internal combustion engine and the like.
A still further object is to provide an improved tiltable engaging jaw for sleeve pullers and the like.
Still a further object is to provide a tiltable member having spring impelled jaws thereon for eng-agement with the lower peripheral edge of a cylinder sleeve.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description of an illustrative embodiment of the present invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side sectional view in elevation of a cylinder, cylinder sleeve, and a sleeve puller embodying features of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a front sectional View in elevation of the structure shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan sectional View taken substantially along line III- III of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan vview of the sleeve puller shown in the preceding figures- Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially along line V--V of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken substantially along line VI--VI of Figure 5.
'The structure selected for illustration is not intended to serve as a limitation upon the scope or teachings of the invention, but is merely illustrative thereof. There may be considerable variations and adaptations of all or part of the teachings depending upon the dictates of commercial practice.
The present embodiment comprises a cylinder or engine block I0 having a cylinder bore I I provided therein to receive a somewhat larger sleeve I2 that is press-tted into the cylinder bore II to project therebelow as at I3. The lower peripheral edge I4 of the cylinder sleeve I2 is 'usually tapered or chamfered to provide a more or less sharp circumferential edge I5.
The problem of removing the cylinder sleeve I2 from the cylinder II is rendered rather simple by utilizing a puller that effectively engages the lower peripheral edge I5 of the sleeve I2 and exerting an upward or outward pull thereon by any suitable actuator such as a mechanical screw member or hydraulic ram of Ia portable type. The specific type of actuator 'may be varied within a wide range depending upon the dictates of commercial practice. The actuator is engageable with or constitutes a part of a threaded stud or shank I6 which engages a correspondingly threaded recess or bore Il provided in a coupler I8 comprising the extremity of a link member I9. The link member I9 terminates, in this instance, in an enlarged circular boss 20 which is transversely bored to receive a threaded pivot pin 2| having -a polygonal recess 22 provided in` an enlarged head 23v thereof.
The pivot 2I projects transversely through spaced furcations 24-25 which are fitted to receive the boss 20 therebetween. The pivot stud 2| threadedly engages the furcations 24-25 to pivotally support a substantially rectangular jaw body 26 formed integral with the furcations 24-25. The jaw body 26 comprises a tangential diametrcal portion of an otherwise circular member and has diametrically disposed jaw receiving guides 21--28 provided therein to receive opposing jaw members 29-30 that are radially slid-able therein. The limit of radial slidable displacement of the jaws 29-30 within the guides 21--28, is determined by pins 3I-32 anchored in the upper surface of the jaws 29-30 for registri7 with confronting slots 33-34 provided in the jaw body 26. The jaws 29-30 are normally urged outwardly by means of coil springs 35-36 which 38. Thelower jaw plate 38 has an axially tapered aperture 39 therein to receive a correspondingly tapered head 40 of a threaded stud 4I that engages a correspondingly threaded bore 42 provided within the boss- 31 of the jaw body 26. A hexagonal or other polygonal recess 43 is provided in the stud head 4U to enable the tightening or loosening thereof with a 'suitable key or wrench. The stud 4I is adjusted to tighten or loosen the jaw plate 38 vtol preset the extent of projection of theradial jaws 25J-30, The jaws 29-30 have inwardly disposed offsets 44--45 which present outwardly disposed shiilders 46a-41 that are capable of engaging a peripheral lower edge I5 of the cylinder sleeve I2.
The offsets 44-45 approach the internal diarneter of the cylinder sleeve I2 so that `the shoulders 46-41 will extend beyond the lower peripheral edge I5 of the sleeve I2. With this arrangement thelj aw body 26 is pivoted at an anglevrelative to the elongated member or shank I9 during the insertion thereof for downward displacement through'the cylinder sleeve I2 until the jaw body 26 with the-jaws 29-30 are displaced below the peripheral sleeve edge I5.A Thereupon, the jaw body 26 will assume a horizontal position so that the jaws 29-30 with their shoulders 46--41 can engage the lowermost peripheral sleeve edge I5. As upward pull is thereafter exerted on the shank member I9 by an actuator of any suitable type which is attached to the threaded shank I6 to exert a force relative to the cylinder block I0 for effecting the removal of the sleeve I2 from the cylinder bore II.
It should be observed that the jaw body 26 need not be tiltable, since the jaws 29--30 are spring urged outwards withoutpresetting Ythem so that a rigidly attached jaw body 26 can be displaced downwardly through the cylinder sleeve I2 as shown in dotted outline in Figure 2. When the jaws 29--30 reach a position beneath the d lower peripheral sleeve edge I5, they are dis-i placed further outwardly by the springs 35-36 to engage the lower peripheral sleeve edge I5. Thereafter, the actuator can be utilized to effect the upper displacement of the sleeve I2 relative to the cylinder bore I I to eiect a removal thereof. While we have illustrated and described a pre; ferred embdifnent of this invention, it must be understood that the invention iscapable of con= siderable variation and modification without d'eparting from the spirit of the invention. We,
therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope 'of the appended claim.
We lclai-m A sleeve pulling device comprising an elongated shank, a jaw body tiltably associated with said shank for enabling insertion through a sleeve, opposed jaws slidably disposed in said jaw body. spring means for normally urging said jaws outwardly to engage the lower peripheral edge of a sleeve, means for limiting the extension of said jaws, an adjustable jaw engaging plate, and means including said adjustable jaw engaging plate for maintaining said jaws in a preset extent of adjustment, said jaw body being a tangential diametrical portion of an otherwise circular member to permit insertion in a sleeve for jaw engagement thereunder for the purpose set forth.
