1 Claim.
This invention relates to' an improvement in cribs for infants, and more particularly to a crib forming structure for use in combination with a bed or couch to provide a complete crib.
One object of the invention is to provide a structure which can be combined withthe frame, springs and mattress of an ordinary bed or couch to furnish safe and comfortable sleeping accommodations for infants.
A further object of the invention is to provide a light and easily transportable device for the above purpose and one which can be stored, when not in use, in a small space.
Other and further objects will be made apparent in the following specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one embodiment of the invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view showing the crib and bed combination in operative relations p;
Fi 2 is an end elevational view looking from the left in Fig. 1, parts being broken away;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the crib member with the parts in operative position;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the parts folded for storage or transportation;
Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the strap members for securing the crib member in operative relation with a bed; and
Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views of a hook member for use with the strap member of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings, the crib element is shown as comprising side members I and end members II. Each side member is made up of upper and lower horizontal members I2 and I3, respectively, connected by any suitable number of vertical connecting spindles I 4. Each end member II is made in two sections. Each section comprises an upper horizontal member I and a lower horizontal member I6, the members I5 and I 6 being connected by vertical spindles IT. The adjacent ends of the members I5 are connected together by hinges I8 and the adjacent ends of the members I6 are connected together by hinges I9, the hinges being secured to the outer faces of the members. The outer ends of members I5 and I6 are respectively connected to the adjacent ends of the members I2 and I3 respectively by hinges 20 secured to the inner faces of the members. By this arrangement, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the end sections may be folded inwardly bringing the side members and end sections into close proximity for easy transportation or storage.
Contractible means, generally indicated at 2|,
are provided at each end of the crib for securing the latter in superposed position on a bed. As shown each means 2| comprises two strap members 22 secured to the lower horizontal members I6, one at each side of the hinge IS. The straps 22 may be secured to the members I6 in any suitable manner. As shown the upper ends of the strap are passed around the members and riveted to the body of the straps as at 23. The lower ends of straps 22 are passed through a ring 24 and riveted to the body of the strap as at 25. Each member 2I includes a third strap member 26 the upper end of which is passed through the ring 24 and riveted to itself at 21. strap members 26 are provided with buckles 28, preferably of the friction type mounted on the body of the strap, or on one end.
When in use the crib is placed on and crosswise of a bed or couch as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The strap members 26 are looped around the side rails 29 of the bed as at 30 and the crib drawn downwardly into tight engagement with the mattress and springs 3| of the bed by contracting the straps through their buckles.
By my invention the spring and mattress of the bed function as the spring and mattress of the crib providing a comfortable surface upon which the occupant rests with the same comfort as in a crib having a built-in spring and matress. Futrhermore, a water-proof pad and a sheet or blanket may be placed on the bed, and blankets or other covering placed over the infant and such sheets, pads, and coverings extended outwardly beneath the members I3 and I6 of the crib before the crib is tightened down by the contraction of the straps. After tightening of the straps such coverings are held in place by the pressure of the bed springs and edges of the crib against displacement by the movement of the occupant of the crib.
The crib itself is immovably held in place on the bed by the spring pressure of bed and mattress and the Y formation of the strap with the arms of the Y pulling outwardly and downwardly at opposite sides of the hinges I9 holds the end sections of the crib extended without the need of special fastening means for that purpose.
If desired the lower end of strap 26 may be provided with a hook member as indicated at 32 in Figs. 6 and T. The hook may be riveted to the strap or, as shown in the later figures it may be threadedon the loop 30, in either case the strap being tightened as previously described. The hooks make it possible to attach the crib to a so-called studio type of couch in which the 3 upholstery is carried down and over the side rails of the couch frame, the hooks engaging the under side of the side rails.
When the crib forming structure is folded as shown in Fig. 4 the strap members may be wrapped around the frame members to secure the latter together for ease in handling.
What l iclainr is: i
A crib formingY-structure which comprises: in
combination vertical side members and end meml0 bers forming a rectangular enclosure open at itss top and bottom and adaptedto be positioned on the surface of a bed or the"like,"eachLSaidremt member being formed in two sections, the adjacent ends of the sections beinge'hinged -onexto the other and the outer ends ofthe sections being respectively hinged to the *a'dj'ace'nt ends of" the side members to swing inwardly, a flexible 4 l connection between the end sections between the said two strap members, the third strap member having a common connection at one end to the free ends of said two strap members, the other end of said third strap member being connectable with a side rail of the bed on which the structure is positioned, and means for contractingesaidr third strap membento draw the crib structure i into immovable engagement with the bed surface against the resilience of the bed mattress and springs and simultaneously hold the end sections in alignment.
