Monroe and Paul Haberfeld, Portland, Oreg., assignors to Jantzen Knitting Mills Inc., Portland, reg., a corporation of Nevada Application November 12, 1949, Serial No. 125,796
4 Claims. 1
Our present invention relates to mens athletic trunks having a permanently combined suspensory means whereby to provide a comfortable,-
efiicient garment of the type described. A principal object of the present invention is to provide for the safety and comfort of the wearer in a unitary, attractive garment.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a garment of the character described which is relatively simple to manufacture and relatively inexpensive as a result While providing a snugly fitting, attractive garment.
The objects and advantages of the present invention will be more readily ascertained by inspection of the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, while the features of novelty will bemore distinctly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a vertical section through the garment taken substantially along the line |-I of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the garment taken substantially along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the preferred embodiment the garment comprises a typical outer garment of the athletic trunks type including a pair of leg portions 10, a crotch portion II and a waistband l2. In the preferred form the waistband includes a relatively wide elastic band i3 which extends about the sides and back of the garment and is stitched to fabric tabs i l and it? toward the front of the garment. Preferably the fabric of the outer garment extends over the top of the elastic band and covers the inside surface thereof, being stitched to itself along the lower edge of the elastic band along a line of stitches l6, and preferably the fabric of the garment covering the elastic band is gathered by parallel lines of stitching l'l whereby to provide an adjustable waistband. The extension tabs l4 and H) are provided with a plurality of buttons l8 and cooperating buttonholes l9 whereby the garment may be opened, and a fly opening 20 extends down the front of the garment in the usual manner of such devices. The fly opening may be suitably closed by separable fastening means such as the slide fastener elements 2! adapted to be hooked to each other by the slide '22.
In accordance with the present invention a suspensory liner is united to the outer garment, the liner comprising a substantially triangularshaped front panel 23 and a substantially identical triangular-shaped rear panel 24, said panels resembling inverted, truncated triangles with their bases secured throughout to the lower edge of said waistband and their narrow, truncated ends joined together along a transverse seam 25 to provide a crotch portion depending loosely within the crotch portion I l of the outer garment. The front panel 23 is provided with a vertical opening of substantially the same extent as the opening 20, with its edges secured throughout to the side edges of the opening 20 by lines of stitching 26. The upper edge of the front panel 23 is secured to the lower edge of the waistband by lines of stitching 21 and 28, along with the stitches I6. The upper edge of .the rear panel 24 is secured throughout to the lower edge of the waistband by the stitches l6. Preferably the outer corners of the front panel overlap the outer corners of the rear panel whereby the side edges of the panels define snugly fitting leg openings 29 extending from the crotch seam 25 to the waistband. Due to the overlapping of the side edges of the leg openings various leg sizes are adjustably accommodated. As a further means of securing snug fit of the leg openings a binding of elastic cord 30 may be secured along the edges of the openings.
It is to be appreciated that the front and rear panels may not be exactly triangular in outline but the general shape thereof is substantially triangular so as to provide relatively narrow crotch tabs and relatively wide upper edges extending throughout at least half, or substantially half, of the extent of the waistband. The material of the liner is preferably soft and somewhat flexible, such as loosely knitted goods of fine mesh, and the upper edges thereof are preferably united to the goods of the outer garment when the waistband is in stretched condition whereby the liner is capable of stretching with the elastic waistband. The garment is of such nature as a result of our invention that the legs of the wearer may be readily inserted without difficulty and the suspensory lining will always be in proper position.
Having illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of our invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the invention permits of modification in arrangement and detail. We claim as our invention all such modifications as come within the true spirit and scope of the appended claims.
We claim:
1. Mens athletic trunks having suspensory means permanently united therewith comprising a pair of trunks having a fly opening down the front thereof, said trunks having a waistband at the upper edge thereof, and a suspensory lining contained within said trunks, said lining comprising a front portion having a fly opening down the middle thereof, the edges of the fly opening of said front portion being stitched to the edges of the fly opening of said trunks and the upper edge of said front portion being stitched to the lower edge of said waistband, and a rear portion having its upper edge stitched to the lower edge of said waistband, each of said front and rear portions having its upper edge extending along at least half the length of said waistband, each of said front and rear portions terminating in a relatively narrow crotch tab, the end edges of the crotch tabs of said front and rear portions being stitched together along a transverse crotch seam and the side edges of said front and rear portions extending diagonally upward from said crotch seam to said waistband to define leg openings extending from the bottom of the suspensory lining to the waistband.
2. In mens athletic trunks of the type having a Vertical opening down the front thereof, separable closure means along said opening, and a resilient waistband, the improvement comprising a front liner panel having a vertical opening down the front thereof, stitches securing the edges of the opening of said front liner panel to the edges of the opening of said trunks, stitches securing the upper edge of said front liner panel to the lower edge of said waistband, a rear liner panel, stitches securing the upper edge of said rear liner panel to the lower edge of said waistband, each of said front and rear liner panels having its upper edge extending along at least half the extent of said waistband, each of said front and rear liner panels terminating in a relatively narrow crotch tab, stitches joining the end edges of said tabs together, the side edges of said front and rear liner panels extending diagonally upward from said tabs to said waistband to define leg openings, and elastic means extending along each of said side edges.
3. Mens athletic trunks comprising an outer garment including a waistband and having a vertical opening down the front, and an inner suspensory lining permanently united to said garment, said lining comprising a front portion and a rear portion, said portions having the general shape of inverted, truncated triangles with their bases secured to said waistband throughout their lengths and their depending, truncated ends secured together to provide a relatively narrow crotch portion, said front panel having a vertical opening down the front thereof with its edges stitched throughout to the edges of the vertical opening in the outer garment, and the upper corners of said front panels overlapping the upper corners of said rear panel at the sides of the trunks whereby the side edges of said panels provide snugly fitting, adjustable leg openings extending from said crotch portion to said waistband, and elastic edging extending along side edges,
4. Mens athletic trunks comprising an outer garment including a waistband and having a vertical opening down the front, and an inner suspensory lining permanently united to said garment, said lining comprising a front portion and a rear portion, said portions having the general shape of inverted, truncated triangles with their bases secured to said waistband throughout their lengths and their depending, truncated ends secured together to provide a relatively narrow crotch portion, said front panel having a vertical opening down the front thereof with its edges stitched throughout to the edges of the vertical opening in the outer garment, the bases of said panels extending along half of the length of said waistband from side to side of the trunks whereby the side edges of said panels provide snugly fitting, adjustable leg openings extending from said crotch portion to said waistband.
