T 1 FIG. 4. Mrs/won MMLTER WRZY .arr axwsr 1 Patented Aug. 14, 1951 UNITED. V PATENT oFF-icE vENTILe roR ATTAQHMENT 7 Walter manage, o eigas igii 'rltejjpehrmann Hotel Supply Col, San Francisco, Calif .a corporation of Nevada;
* faceof the rangearadrawnioff by power suction devices such' as electrically. driven blowers, and in connection with" such ventilators it is common to provide means suchas'bafiies for-trapping or extracting thefgre'ase; The'present-invention', has for itspurpose'the provision of an improved ventilator" attachment of the above character'which provides for ready access to the interior of the grease trapping structure to enable easy inspection andcleaning of such interior while. retaining a desirablebaflle structure which :provides a warning if cleanout of the trapping structure is not effected-at regular intervals. "13
The above and other objects of the invention will be apparent-from the following description of a preferred embodiment of the invention, as
illustrated in; the accompanying i ravv1p in which: '1'.
Figure 1 is a partial front elevatiiin of eventilator attachment 'embodying'the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view throughlthe attachment.
Figure 3 is an Figure2;- 7
enlarged view of a portion of Figure l is afragmentary sectional viewiof the v hinge or pivot construction.
Referring-tame drawings, the ventilator .at-
' tachment" includes agener'ally. rectangular open front frame structure including a, back wall In,
and respective side plates .extending I outwardly therefrom above ;thecookingsurface 12 of the rangeindicated"schematicallyih Figure 2. As illustrated, the back walF-lfldncludes afrearsec- 'ti-on" I awhich may "be integral with" the side plates II and an interior back wall lllb spaced forwardly therefrom. A grease trough I3 is formed along the wall lllb between the side walls ll. Projecting forwardly from above the trough l3 and extending between the two side plates H is a horizontal shelf M which may be formed integrally with a flanged front wall section It of a passage H to form a cleaning door unit. The passage l'l leads upwardly from below the shelf [4 into an enlarged grease trapping chamber l8 from which a suitable conduit (not shown) extends to the point of disposal of the fumes. The entrant end of the passage ll is formed by a t tate news formedbtween the rear edge .-of the shelf l4 and the "forward" edge of 'the Q l i 13} I Baiiie eans'are provided to'form'a tortuous 5 of flow of the fumes and grease laden air from" above "thestove" to an in extraction of grease. An arcuate baffle 2I,'which"may be suitably attached asj by welding to the door unit rented by the Shelf '14 and the wall section I6 10 eiten'ds downwardly and rearwardly toward the "nte'ri bf the trough l3 and below theupperedge of'the' trough. A V-sh'aped 'baiile'2'2 is secured'on ith'ewall I06 and spaced upwardly from the arouate'baflie 2i. As shown; these baflies provide a tortuous fio'w'of the air entering the lower end Tof'the passage so'that certain particles of grease j and other matter entrained with the gases are '."thrown therefrom through centrifugal action against the rear wall of the passage. Also it is to fbenotecl that the trough l3 underlies the respec- "tive front and rear walls of the passage I! to catchahy' grease dripping therefrom. Because fthebaffle 2i extends slightly into the trough 13, any failure to clean the trough at regular inter- Ival's ,will result in a level of greasein the trough that will impede or stop the flow of 7 l .Toprovide for easy access to the passage and .I; ba'fliejstructure for cleaning, the door unit formed by the shelf "I 4 and the wall section [6 is provided at its ends with respective depending hinge plates T123 pivotally' supported by bolts 24 on the side Walls H. ,The "upper edge of the wall section I6 is" bent to form .a, lip I 6a which is preferably confcent'ric with the axis of pivoting of the door unit andnests.within a complementary U-shapedstop .foi' seat'24 formedat' the lower edge of a front wall .25.,of'the passageway. The interlocking of the lip Ilia and its seat 24 provide a grease seal. One or Tmo'r'e suitable handles 26 are provided on the wall .i section"l6. I
. J From theabove description it will be seen that f1 lo'y.. svi'ingihg the door unit comprising the shelf M andthewallsec'tion IE idrwardly'ehddownwardly from its normal rest position to its open position as shown in phantom lines in Figure 2,
. the entire interior surface of the passage I! including the surfaces of the baffies 21 and 22, the interior of the trough l3, etc. are completely accessible for cleaning to remove any grease which may have been deposited on the Walls or which has drained into the trough l3 It will be noted also that because the initial pivoting movement of the door unit is in an upward direction, the
bafiie 21 is lifted free of the trough I3.
While I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that the invention is capable of variation and modification from the form shown so that its scope should be limited only by the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In-comloination with a range having a cooking surface, a ventilator including'a frame structure having a back wall extending upwardly from the rear edge of said cooking surface of the range and respective side plates extending forwardly from the back wall, a shelf mounted on said frame between said side plates' an'd"above the cooking surface, a wall sectionconne'cted to'and extending upwardly from said shelf to form therewith a door unit, means including said frame structure and said wall section forming a passageway leading from below said shelf upwardly through saidstructllre for exhaust of fumes and gasesfand pivotalfsupport means for said'door u'nit'adjacen't thefront edge of said shelf for movement thereof between an upper normal closed. position and a depending openposition providing accessto said passageway for inspection and cleaning.
