Description
June 19, 1951 4 N. L.ELLISON AUTOMOBILE ATTACHABLE GARMENT HANGER Filed March a, 1949 Norman L. E l/isan Patented June 19, i951 UNITED STATES PTENT OFFICE AUTOMOBILE ATTACHABLE GARMENT HANGER 4 Claims.
The present invention relates to garment hangers, generally classified, and has more specifi'c reference to a novel multiple purpose hanger which is expressly constructed so that it may be employed in a clothes closet in customary fashion and may, in addition, be satisfactorily and advantageously used Within the confines of an automobile. I
In carrying out the principles of the invention, I provide a suitably constructed garment hanger and equip same with an unique adapter unit, the latter being for multiple purpose use, and embodying dual hook means made up of one hook for clothes closet use, and a second equally. novel hook which lends itself for practical and serviceable use in the tonneau of an automobile.
Although conventional type wire hangers may be suspended in the present day automobiles, it has been found that the relatively thin wire .suspension hook is subject to poor anchorage and attachment difficulties, and is thus liable to undesirable displacement. Then too, the usual makeshift facilities employed in automobiles set up interferences with hangers and garments appreciably lessening the comforts of annoyed occupants. Therefore, one object of the present invention is to provide an adapter which is especially designed and equipped with a broad hook, said hook being nicely shaped and made, so that it may be securely and reliably suspended from the inner car window moulding, in such a way that the aforementioned difficulties are acceptably overcome.
Special garment hangers for car use, are not, generally speaking, everyday needs. Therefore, it is an object of the invention to provide a hanger of the aforementioned type which is characterized by an adapter having two hooks, one which serves amply in an automobile, and which may be subsequently swung to an out-of-way position bringing the usual wire type hook in place, in order that the latter may be utilized for everyday use in a clothes closet in ones home.
Other objects and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings.
In the drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the views;
Figure 1 is an elevational view, showing a fragmentary portion of an automobile body, covering my improved multiple purpose hanger and the manner in which same is suspended and illustrating, in dotted lines, a coat hung therefrom.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary View disclosing with particularity how the broad billed hook attaches to the stated window moulding.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view setting forth the details of construction of the adapter unit.
Referring now to the drawings by distinguishing reference numerals, the garment hanger per se is denoted by the numeral 5. Although this may be of a construction other than illustrated, I prefer to use a substantially triangular wire frame. Instead of being formed with a twisted wire hook, the frame, in accordance with my invention, has a straight portion 6 which may be conveniently designated as an axle or shaft portion, and it is to this axle that the novel two part multiple purpose adapter unit I, is connected. In fact, the adapter unit may be said to be hingedly mounted on the said axle or, conversely, the frame 5 maybe said to be rockably attached to the adapter unit. In any event, the adapter unit is characterized primarily by a relatively wide,
essentially flat, plate 8 having one surface padded or otherwise covered as at 9, to function as a protector shield, 'one end portion of the plate being slightly widened and curved as at l0, bent as at ll vand further bent at l2 to form the aforemen tioned broad hook. This hook lends itself for secure and approximately fixed anchorage between the body l3, of the car (see Figure 2), and the adjacent lip of the metal moulding [4. This is the moulding for the sliding window [5 and is held in place by a screw it. If necessary, the screw may be slightly loosened to provide sufiicient space to accommodate the hook I2. Once the hook is pressed into place, the entire plate becomes a substantially rigid support or suspension device for the hanger frame 5. Thus, while the frame 5 may swing, the plate stays fixed. As shown in Figure 3, the lower end of the plate has three extensions and two of them are fashioned into knuckles ll and I8, and these are hingedly attached to the shaft portion 6. The other extension !9, is apertured and then fashioned into a hook 20, and this serves to permit the wire hook 2| to be satisfactorily attached. More specifically the shank 22, has a head 23, secured in the bent or hook portion of said extension l9;
The headed end may be clenched by the bent terminal 20 to prevent undue shifting of the head and may yet be so bent that it does not prevent slight axial turning of the shank 22, in those instances where it becomes necessary to slightly turn or angle the hook 21 for ready attachment to a pole, nail or the like in a clothes closetl Mainly, I am concerned with an adapter charwith the drawings.
acterized by bent wire hook means 2|, on one side of the axle 6 and having a broad hookequipped-plate on the other side of said axle, the two hooks 2| and I2 being assembled and fastened together as one unit, and this constituting the stated adapter and being hingedly mounted, by the stated knuckles l7 and M3 on the axle portion 6. It follows that with an adapter of this type the frame 5 becomes a convertible or multiple purpose garment hanger.
If desired, washers 24 and 25 may be attached to the end portions of shaft 6 to serve as stop shoulders for said adapter unit I.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in the shape, size and arrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice, if desired,
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A multiple purpose clothes hanger of the type shown and described comprising a wire hanger frame having a limited straight portion defining an axle, an adapter embodying a plate having a pair of hinging knuckles at one end hinged at longitudinally spaced points to said axle and having, at its opposite end, a broad hook adapted to be securely hung from a window moulding in an automobile, and a wire hook having a shank portion fastened to and carried by the knuckle equipped end of said plate.
2. A multiple purpose clothes hanger comprising a coat hanger having a centrally disposed straight portion defining an axle, and a two-way adapter, the latter embodying a relatively broad plate with an equally broad suspension hook at its outer end and hinging' knuckles at its inner end hingedly connected with said axle, and also provided at said inner end with an extension terminating in a hook situated outwardly of said knuckles, and a wire hanger hook including a shank portion fastened to the terminal hook on said extension.
3. As a new article of manufacture and as a component part of a hanger assemblage of the class described, a relatively fiat plate having one end widened and curved, and terminating in a broad flange constituting a hook, the other end of the plate having a pair of spaced hinging knuckles and an extension situated between and projecting beyond said knuckles, said extension terminating in an apertured hook, and a wire hanger hook including a headed shank mounted in the apertured portion of said terminal hook.
4. A multiple purpose clothes hanger of the class shown and described comprising a wire hanger frame including a frame member provided with a linearly straight portion of limited length defining an axle portion, an adapter embodying a substantially fiat wide plate having a correspondingly wide suspension hook at one end adapted to be hung from a window moulding in an automobile, the opposite end of said plate having a pair of spaced knuckles hingedly attached to said axle portion, said last named end also having an extension situated between said hinging knuckles and projecting beyond the hinging knuckles and terminating in an apertured hook, a wire hanger hook having a shank portion fastened to the apertured hook on said extension, and a pair of longitudinally spaced stop shoulders mounted on said axle portion outwardly of but adjacent to the respective hinging knuckles.
