UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH E. STEGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CAR-HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,690, dated March 28, 1882.
' Application filed January 25,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. STEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Heaters, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to the construction of stoves forheating railroad-cars 5 and it consists in a heating-dome which is adapted to be fixed to the bottom of the car, combined witha firebox which is r'emovably attached to such dome,
' so that when desired a fire may be built in the fire-box separately from or outside the car. The fire-box is arranged to slide on the heatin g-dome for its attachment to and detachment therefrom.
This invention is illustrated-in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section, showing the same applied to a car. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection of the heater detached. Figs. 3 and 4. respectively show the heating-dome and firebox detached.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. The letter A designates the heating dome, and B the firebox. The heating-dome A is adapted to be permanently secured to the bottom of the our, being provided with flanges c for this purpose, while it is provided with a nipple, d, for its connection with a smoke-pipe. The fire-box B is provided with an ordinary grate and ash-pit, and also with a feeder, 5, consisting of an inclined tube or chute. On the lower edges and opposite sides of the heatingdome A are formed grooves e, while on the upper edges and opposite sides of the fire-box B are formed flanges f, adapted to engage the grooves e, so that byinserting the flanges into,
starting the fire inside or aboard of the car. The means employed, moreover, materially facilitatethe removal and attachment of the firebox.
I am aware that portable stoves or furnaces having fire-boxes, grates, and ash-drawersare not new, and that such fire-boxes have been provided with flanges for attaching them to the bottom of washing-machines. I am also aware that a cooking-stove has been provided on its under side with a sliding detachable fire-box containinga grate. I am. also aware that a stove has been fitted under the seat of a car and provided with a grate arranged beneath the flooring and over an ash-pan which depends from the bottom of the car and is so arranged that the ashes may be cleaned out or dumped, the upper portion of the said stove being connected with a smoke-pipe for conveying off the products of combustion. Such constructions and arrangements of stoves and furnaces do not constitute my invention, and are not claimed by me. In my car-heater Iprovidea heatingdome with means whereby it maybe attached to the bottom of a car, and at its upper portion it is connected with a smoke-conveying pipe. I also provide a fire-box which is detachably connected with the bottom portion of the heating'dome, and is provided with a grate and means for feeding fuel onto the grate, such means consisting of a feed-chute projecting from one side of the fire-box, and this construction and combination of parts I consider substantially and materially different from the construction and arrangement of stoves or furnaces above recited as being heretofore known.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a heater for cars, the heating-dome secured to the bottom of the car and connected at its upper portion with a smoke-pipe, in combination with a fire-box detachably connected with the bottom portion of the heating-dome, and provided with a grate and means for feeding the fuel onto the grate, substantially as described.
2. In a heater for cars, a heating-dome provided with flanges supported by the bottom of the car, and provided with a device at its upper portion which is attached to a smoke pipe or flue, in combination with the fire-box dctachably connected with the bottom portion of the heating-dome, and provided with a grate and an inclined feeding-chute, substantially as 5 described.
3. A heater for cars combining in its structure a heating-dome secured to the bottom of the car and provided with grooves e e in its lower side portions, and a fire-box provided 10 with flangesff, adapted to slide horizontally in said grooves, substantially as described.
4. The combination, in a car-heater, of the heating-dome having flanges 0, supported by the bottom of the car, and provided atits lower side portions with longitudinal grooves c, with :5 a fire-pot having flangesf, adapted to slide in said groovesin the heating-dome,and provided with a grate and an inclined fuel-feedin g chute,
z, substantially as described.
1 In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my 20 hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
