Application December 23, 1946, Serial No. 717,936
Claims. 1
The invention relates to receptacles made up of two sections at least one of which is hollow and includes two walls which meet and may be soldered together about their meeting margins. The two sections or members of the receptacles may be hinged together at their edges and a strain may be put on the members and especially on the soldered joint at the hinge. This may be particularly noticed in compacts and the like in which one member may comprise a shell into which is soldered a bezel at its margin. Usually the hinge means is made integral with the bezel and especially in a compact one member may contain a mirror which makes the Weight tend to break away the joint at or near the hinge. The present invention contemplates providing a plate or the like underlying the bezel at the hinge and acting as a supporting member therefor. .The supporting plate may also extend across the joint and rest against the shell. Such an arrangement may make place for better soldering and prevent breaking away of the parts in use. A special seat may be provided in the shell for the plate.
I One embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an open compact. Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a perspective view of the plate or supporting member. Figure 4 is a bottom fragmentary plan View of a bezel showing the plate in position at the hinge before put on the shell. Figure 5 is a fragmentary plan view of the inside of a shell.
A shell member It] may be fitted with a bezel member H which as is usual will meet the shell and be fastened to it by solder within its entire periphery. Hinge members I2 may be turned up on each bezel to eventually be put together to receive the hinge pintle 13. Since the bezel and shell generally meet at only a line at their edges there is not much room to apply the needed solder to hold them together. Through most of the periphery there is little strain and the bezel may stay in place in the shell. At the hinge, however, the strain is greater and in order to relieve this and make a stronger joint at this point there may be provided a supporting plate [4 which will closely underly the bezel at the hinge. There usually is an inner collar 15 in the bezel member and the supporting plate l4 may have extending legs l6 which may engage the collar 15 and be braced against it. This arrangement provides a relatively large surface to receive solder, instead of the usual nearly line contact, at the hinge. The plate l4 may also have an integral flangelike part ll of it turned just at the hinge and entering and engaging a pocket 58 formed in the shell member it. This arrangement aids in strengthening the joint and provides additional space and surface to receive additional solder to make a joint which will not break apart when the hinge is operated as the device is opened and closed.
The specific details are not essential but may be changed in many respects.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a compact or the like a shell, a bezel joined along its marginal edge to the marginal edge of the shell by soldering, a depending collar in the bezel, a hinge member at the edge of and integral with the bezel, a pocket in the shell facing the hinge member, a supporting member underlying the bezel adjacent the hinge member and extending from the joint between the shell and bezel edges to and being braced against the collar, a flange integral with and at right angles to the supporting member and lying against the shell in the pocket, and said supporting member being attached to both shell and bezel by the Y solder of the edge joined therebetween.
2. In a compact or the like a shell, 3. bezel joined along its marginal edge to the marginal edge of the shell by soldering, a hinge member at the edge of and integral with the bezel, a pocket in the shell facing the hinge member, a supporting member underlying the bezel adjacent the hinge member, and a flange integral with and at right angles to the supporting member and lying against the shell in the pocket, said supporting member and flange being attached to both the shell and bezel by the solder of the edge joint therebetween.
3. In a compact or the like a shell, a bezel joined along its marginal edge to the marginal edge of the shell by soldering, a hinge member at the edge of and integral with the bezel, a supporting member underlying the bezel adjacent the hinge member and including a flange integral with and depending from the supporting member into the space between the bezel and shell and following the contour of the inner surface of the shell, said supporting member and flange being attached to both the shell and bezel by the solder of the edge joint therebetween.
4. In a compact or the like a shell, .a bezel joined along its marginal edge to the marginal edge of the shell by soldering, a depending collar in the bezel, a hinge member at the edge of and integral with the bezel, a supporting member underlying the bezel adjacent the hinge member 3 and being braced against the collar, and a flange integral with and at an angle to the supporting member and lying against the shell, said supporting member and flange being attached to both the shell and bezel by the solder of the edge joint 'therebetween.
5. In a compact or the like a shell, a bezel joined along its marginal edge to the marginal edge of the shell by soldering, a depending collar in the bezel, a hinge member at the edge of and integral with the bezel, a pocket in the shell facing the hinge member, a supporting member underlying the bezel adjacent the hinge member and extending to and braced against the collar, and a flange integral with the supporting memher and extending into the pocket and having direct contact with the inner surface of the shell, said supporting member and its flange being attached to both the shell and bezel by the solder of the edge joint therebetween.
