'UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. AMES AND ABEL H. FROST, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE CONNECTION FOR WOVEN-WIRE BED-F RAME S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,405. dated March 28, 1882,
Application filed January 16, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES L. AMES and ABEL H. FROST, of Chicago, in the countyof Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in AdjustableConnectionsforWoven-WireBed-Frames; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of IBfGIQHCGlllflIkEd thereon, which form a part of this specification. v
This invention relates to devices for adjustably fastening the end bars to the side rails of a woven-wire bed-bottom in which the fabric is supported under tension from the end bars. Its object is to provide a construction in adjustable connections for such bed-frames which shall be more compact,.strong, reliable, and easy of adjustment than those heretofore in use and to this end it consists in the features of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
' In the drawings, Figure 1 is a section of a woven-wire bed-bottom transverse to the end rail and near one side rail, showing our improved connecting device with the tensionscrew arranged outside the end bar. Fig. 2 is the same view,'showing the tension-screw arranged at the inner edge of the end bar. Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the fastening-plates, detached and enlarged, through 3 3. of Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of said plates through 4 4. of Fig. 3.
A is the side rail, and B is the end bar, of the bed-frame.
C and D are the two plates of our improved fastening. The plate C is relatively thick, and is longitudinally recessed at 0, giving side flanges, 0 as shown in Fig. 4, to receive nearly the entire thickness of the sectionally dovetailshaped smaller plate D. At one end the plate C is provided with a strong lug, 0, cast continuous with the flanges 0 as well as with the intervening part of the plate, so as to form a head, which closes one end of the recess a. This lug is apertured at c and tapped to admit the square-headed screw C as near as practi-- cable to the bottom of the recess 0, so that the end of the'screw C bears against the end of the plate D when lying in said recess, as shown in Fig. 8.
As an essential feature of our invention each of the plates C and D, being of the form indicated, is provided with bolt-holes a or 01 directly through the body thereof, which holes are countersunk in the meeting faces of the plates, as shown. By this location of the bolts the utmost strength is secured in the fa-stening without impairing the strength ofthe plates, and the compactness of the plates is preserved, by which the desirable proximity of the frame-rails, when connected thereby, is obtained.
Either plate may be secured to either part of the bed-frame. Thus in Fig. 1 the heavier plate C is secured to the end bar, B, and the plate D to the side rail, A. In Fig. 2 the plates are reversed in relation to the frame parts, with the effect of bringing the screw C inside the end bar and over the side rail, A.
By arranging the screw 0 low down, soas to work in the dovetailed recess 0 of the plate C, said screw may directly bear upon the end of the plate D, instead of upon the wood of the rail to which the latter is secured, and thus work more easily and effectively. Moreover, being thus arranged, the head of the screw C *is to the utmost practicable degree out of the as stated, materially strengthens the plate 0 In testimony that we claim the foregoing as against a liability to break under the great ourjoint invention we affix our signatures in strain of thefabric which falls upon said flan ges. presence of two Witnesses.
We claim as our invention l 5 As an adjustable fastening for bed-frames gdgg having the fabric stretched from end to end,
