This invention relates to a flexible and impervious cap or shield to be stretched about the head to protect the face during shampooing, washing or otherwise treating the head or scalp.

An object of importance of the invention is to provide a waterproof shield which may be worn about the neck during one portion of a head or scalp treatment and during another or later portion of the treatment may be worn in stretched condition about the head substantially below, the hair line but above the face.

A feature that enables the above object to be efiective is that the shield is made from a substantially circular piece of flexible and impervious or waterproof sheet material such as rubber, plastic, rubberized silk or other elastic or inelastic fabric, there being a central opening formed in the sheet through which the head may be extended.

Another object of the invention is to provide an opening in the circular sheet that may be sufiiciently expanded to permit the head to pass through the opening but which will snugly fit about the neck and head when in operative position.

And finally it is an object of the invention provide a reinforcement at the periphery of the opening, preferably formed of elastic band material, attached as by being bonded to the material forming the shield adjacent the opening while the band material is stretched relative to the shield material so that the opening can be greatly expanded and so that when tension is removed from the band material the material forming the shield will be shirred about the opening.

With the above and other objects in view the invention includes the features of construction and operation set forth in the following;specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.

In the accompanying drawing annexed. hereto and forming a part of this specification,}I have shown the invention embodied in a convenient size shield of circular outline but it will -be understood that the invention can be otherwise embodied and that the drawing is not to be construed as defining or limiting the scope of the invention, the claim appended to this specification being relied upon for that purpose.

In the above mentioned drawing, there has been shown but one embodiment of the invention which is now deemed preferable, but it is to be understood that changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirt of the invention.

Referring more in detail to the figures; of the drawing and first to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the shield comprises a large generally circular piece of flexible thin and impervious material l0. Preferably but not necessarily the material l0 may be stretchable or elastic and such that it will return to its normal dimension when not under tension. Also as shown in Fig. 3 one section may be formed of transparent material l2 stitched or otherwise fastened to the material I0 forming the principal portion of the shield.

Within the central portion of the shield is an opening 14 of circular outline to permit the shield to pass over the head of the user as shown in Fig. 1.

Preferably and as shown in the drawing the edge of the opening It may have applied to it on itsunderside an elastic band I6. This band I5 is attached to the edge of the opening l4 while the band It is in stretched condition. The contraction of the band when tension is released will shir the material ID of the shield adjacent the opening and permit the shield to snugly engage the wearers neck. The elasticity of the band IE permits the shield to be stretched around the opening sufficiently to enlarge the opening and pass over the wearers head when being applied to the positions shown in Figs. 1 or 2.

The band it after the shield is applied as shown inFig. 1 snugly fits about the neck of the wearer to protect clothing worn by the user. During the rinsing or drying of the hair the shield may be worn as indicated in Fig. :2. The band I6 is sufficiently elastic and resilient to expand to and fit in this position and be retained firmly in position by the contractive force of the reinforcing band l6.

As shown in the Figures 1, 2' and 3 of the drawing, the reinforcing band I6 is attached or bonded to the material In by a heated crimping iron to give a finished and ornamental eifect to the shield adjacent the opening. By this method of attachment for the band IE to the material I0 stitches about the periphery of the opening which would restrict the enlargement of the opening are avoided.

I claim as my invention:

A shampoo shield comprising a circular piece of flexible impervious sheet material having a recessed portion in its periphery and a central expansible opening therein, said material being shirred around the opening to permit enlargement of the opening, a stretchable re-inforcing member surrounding the periphery of said opening and permanently bonded thereto throughout the edge thereof whereby said shield may be Worn closely fitted about the head or neck, and

a transparent section of flexible impervious material forming a part of said shield, the side and 4 shield and the outer edge of said transparent section forming a continuous portion of the periphery of the shield.
