Description
April 24, 1951 N. YOUNG UNDERGARMENT FOR LADIES Filed Jan.. 19, 1949 INVENTOR. W47- foam/ Patented Apr. 24, W 1951 UNITED STATES TENT OFFICE 2,550,396 UNDERGARMENT FOR LADIES Nat Young, Forest Hills, N. Y. Application January 19, 1949, Serial No. 71,609
6 Claims.
The present invention is directed to under- I garments, more particularly to such garments as bloomers, panties, drawers and the like.
In the prior art structures of this type there were disadvantages in that the cut of the garment was such as to be uncomfortable to the wearer, particularly if the wearer was overweight. To overcome this, applicant devised a new structure which is the subject matter of his co-pending application, Serial No. 30,641, filed June 2, 1948, and entitled Ladies Undergarment. In the co-pending application there was described a garment in which the various elements constituting the garments are cut in a novel manner and then assembled as by stitching, in order to give the desired results. Generally there are five pieces which are assembled to form the garment. First, there is a relatively small back member elongated in form and having convex sides with an inverted V-shaped notch at the lower end thereof. Adjacent thereto are a pair of side members, each of which has a concave side complementary to the adjacent convex side of the back member. Opposite said concave side is a straight vertical edge which constitutes the front centerline of the garment. Said side members have a diagonally extending portion. depending therefrom and a pair of panels of relatively small size is provided to cooperate with said extending portions. One side of each panel is attached to such portion below the front centerline. The lower part of each panel is attached to the adjacent side of the notch of the back member. The upper side of said panels are secured together and all of the elements are attached in their relative positions to provide the completed garment.
It has now been found that although a garment of this construction is quite satisfactory, some difficultie in manufacture have arisen. and, therefore, it is among the objects of the present invention to provide a garment of the type de scribed wherein the operations in the manufacture thereof are simplified and the amount of skill necessary for the operator in producing the garment has been minimized.
It is also among the objects of the present invention to provide a garment which is still more comfortable for the wearer than that described in the aforesaid pendin application. V
In practicing the present invention, there is provided a set of fabric pieces which are stitched together to complete the garment. There is a back member which is roughly rectangular in shape, having substantially parallel lateral edges and an inverted V-shaped notch at the lower end. The apex of the notch is atabout the central portion of said back member. The width of this member is such that the lateral edges extend around to the sides of the body of the wearer. I
There are also provided a pair of side members, each of which has a straight side which is complementary to the lateral edges of the back member and is stitched thereto. The opposite members.
edge of each side member is formed straight at its upper portion and parallel to the first mentioned edge. Extending from the lower part of each side member is a diagonal extension which constitutes the inner leg portion of the garment.
There are also provided a pair of panels which are roughly triangular in shape, and the triangle being equilateral; The upper edge of each panel is concave, one of the side edges is convex, and the other side edge is concave-convex. All five members are suitably stitched together, whereby the garment is completed and because of the shapes of the various elements entering into the structure, a considerable fullness is obtained in the garment without any sagging. This allows free movement of the wearer and avoids binding in all positions. There are no seams in the back of the garment, so that the individual may sit in comfort without any pressure of seams being encountered.
In the accompanying drawin constituting a part hereof and in which like reference characters indicate like parts,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the set of five pieces of fabric constituting the garment of the present invention, the parts being shown in their proper relative positions for stitching together;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevational View of a garment made in accordance with the present invention, and
Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of a slightly modified form of the garment.
There is provided the back member I having a slightly bowed top edge 2 and substantially parallel lateral edges 3 and 3. The lower edge t is straight and in the center thereof is a notch 5 in the form of an inverted V. The sides 5 and I of the notch are slightly concave.
A pair of side members 8 and 8' have straight edges 9 and 9' and corresponding to edges 3 and 3 to which they are stitched. Upper edges ii! and ID of said side. members are slightly sloped in continuation of the slope of top 2 of back I. The lower edges l l and H of said side members are straight for the greater part of their length and concaved at l2 and i2. There is a diagonally upward cut 13 and I3 merging with the downwardly extending edges l4 and M of the side Side edges !5 and I5 are parallel to edges 9 and 9'.
There is further provided a pair of panels 16 and I6 roughly in the form of equilateral triangles and having slightly convexed sides I1 and I1. Adjacent sides l8 and it have a concavo or sinuous curvature. The tops l9 and it are concave. The various members are stitched together in the position shown in Fig. 1 and edges 13 and I8 are stitched to edge 6, with edges l3 and I8 stitched to edge 1. Tops l9 and 19' are stitched together to complete the garment.
In Fig. 3 is shown a front view of the structure described above. However, the lower edges of the pants legs -29 are inclined upwardly from the inner side thereof in order to give freer moveof individuals.
Jment by the wearer. To obtain this, the cut of edges 4, II and II as shown in Fig. l is suitably altered.
Although the invention has been described setting forth two specific embodiments thereof, various changes in the details of construction may be made within the spirit of the invention. For instance, the proportions of the back and side members may be altered to fit various sizes The curvatures of the several elements must remain approximately the same as shown but some changes therein may be made without losing any of the benefits of the structure. Any suitable type and character of fabric may be used in the garment. These and other changes maybe made in the invention without departing from the spirit thereof and the invention is, therefore, to be broadly construed and not to be limited except by the character of the claims appended hereto.
