This invention relates "to a device for forming ringlets or curls of hair on the head of the user and has for its primar object to facilitate the rapid formation of the ringlets, and to hold the formed ringlets in place for a period of time sufficient to cause the hair to retain the shape imparted thereto for a reasonable length of time.

Another object is to avoid the use of hair pins and like accessories, and to assure the retention of the hair in the desired shape for the desired period of time.

The above and other objects may be attained by employing this invention which embodies among its features a substantially ring-shaped base having a radial slot extending :therethrough, an elongated mandrel of flexible material fixed at one end to the base diametrically opposite the slot, said mandrel extending beyond the confines of said base and being capable of being coiled about the axis of said base to lie wholly within the outer periphery of said base, an elongated coil retaining strap fixed at one end to the base adjacent the periphery thereof, and means carried by opposite end of the strap detachably to couple said end of the strap to the base diametrically opposite the place at which the strap is fixed to the base, thereby to hold the coiled mandrel in coiled position on the base.

Other features include opposed parts of a separable fastener fixed t the base adjacent opposite sides of the slot, so that the base may be held in complete encircling position about a group of strands of hair.

Referring to the drawings in detail a base In is formed of any suitable material, such as a flexible plastic and is substantially ring-shaped, with a radial slot l2 extending therethrough so that the device may be slipped onto and off of a group of strands of hair adjacent the head of the user. The base In is provided adjacent op- .2 posite sides of the slot [2 with the parts M and [5 of a separable fastener so that the base may be caused to completely encircle the strands of hair.

Secured in any suitable manner as at 16 to the base It diametrically opposite the slot 12 is one end of an elongated mandrel I8 which is preferably formed of a flexible wire of relatively small diameter. Secured to the base Ill midway be tween the slot I2 and the fastening 56 of the mandrel i2- is one end of a locking strap 2i! which is preferably formed of flexible, elastic material. The opposite end of the strap 20 is provided with a tongue 22 which is adapted to enter a slot 24 formed in the base adjacent the outer edge thereof diametrically opposite the point at which the end of the strap 2!] is fixed to the base.

In use, a group of strands of hair on the head of the user are collected together and slipped through slot [2 of the base ID. The slot l2 may then be closed by causing a portion of thebase adjacent said slot to overlie the opposite portion of the base and coupling the members l4 and N5 of the separable fastener so that the base completely encircles the group of strands. The strands are then collected together and braided with the mandrel [8 as suggested in the Figure 2, after which the mandrel is rolled upon itself from its free end toward the fixed end thereof so that the mandrel, together with the hair braided thereon, is coiled into a tight coil which lies substantially wholly within the confines of the outer periphery of the base ID, as suggested in Figure 3. After having so coiled the mandrel with the hair thereon, the strap 20 is extended across the coiled mandrel and hair; and the tongue 22 of the strap 2!] is passed through the opening 24 to hold the mandrel and hair in coiled position. The device may remain on the head of the user any desired length of time, sufiicient to set the ringlets in the group of strands of hair after which the tongue 22 may be withdrawn from the slot 24 and the parts of the separable fastener may be released so that upon disengaging the hair from the mandrel, the device may be withdrawn from the head of the user without destroying the ring,- lets that have been formed in the group of strands of hair. 7

Obviously as many of these ringlet forming devices may be used as desired by the user and they may be left in place on the head for any desired length of time sufiicient to produce the desired effect. By the use of this device, the hair may be curled to any desired extent according to the taste of the user.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred form of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

I claim:

1. In a device for forming ringlets of hair on the head of a user, a substantially ring shaped base of flexible material having a radial slot extending therethrough, an elongated mandrel of flexible material fixed at one end to the base diametrically opposite the slot, said mandrel extending beyond the confines of said base and being capable of being coiled about the axis of said base to lie wholly within the outer periphery of said base, an elongated coil retaining strap fixed at one end to the base adjacent the periphery thereof, and means carried by the opposite end of the strap detachably to couplesaid end of the strap to the base diametrically opposite the place at which the strap is fixed to the base.

In a device for forming ringlets of hair on the head of a user, a substantially ring shaped base of flexible material having a radial slot extending therethrough, an elongated mandrel of flexible material fixed at one end to the base diametrically opposite the slot, said mandrel extending beyond the confines of said base and being capable of being coiled about the axis of said base to lie wholly Within the outer periphery of said base, an elongated coil retaining strap of elastic material fixed at one end to the base adjacent the periphery thereof, and means carried by the opposite end of the strap detachably to couple said end of the strap to the base diametrically opposite the place at which the strap is fixed to the base.

In a device for forming ringlets of hair on the head of a user, a substantially ring shaped base of flexible material having a radial slot extending therethrough, parts of a separable fastener carried by the base adjacent the slot for holding the parts of the base in overlapping position and causing the base completely to encircle a group of strands of hair, an elongated mandrel of flexible material fixed at one end to the base diametrically opposite the slot, said mandrel extending beyond the confines of said base and being capable of being coiled about the axis of said base to lie wholly within the outer periphery of said base, an elongated coil retaining strap fixed at one end to the base adjacent the periphery thereof, and means carried by the opposite end of the strap detachably to couple said end of the strap to the base diametrically opposite the place at which the strap is fixed to the base.

4. In a device for forming ringlets of hair on the head of a user, a substantially ring shaped base of flexible material having a radial slot extending therethrough, parts of a separable fastener carried by the base adjacent the slot for holding the parts of the base in overlapping position and causing the base completely to encircle a group of strands of hair, an elongated mandrel of flexible material fixed at one end to the base diametrically opposite the slot, said mandrel extending beyond the confines of said base and being capableof being coiled about the axis of said base to lie wholly Within the outer periphery of said base, an elongated coil retaining strap of elastic material fixed at one end to the base adjacent the periphery thereof, and means carried by the opposite end of the strap detachably to couple said end of the strap to the base diametrically opposite the place at which the strap is fixed to the base.
