Description

K. E. HAND REVERSIBLE SETTEE AND CHAIR INVENTOR. Key/wry EDP/A547 11m A721? OEZVZ'F Filed Feb. 1, 1949 March 13, 1951 Patented Mar. 13, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE REVERSIBLE SETTEE AND CHAiR Kenneth Edward Hand, Kalamazoo, Mich.
Application February 1, 1949, Serial No. 74,025
3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a reversible settee.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a reversible settee which can be used first with one side up and then with the other side up, thereby making it possible to have the settee covered with different color material on the opposite sides so that the same settee can be fitted into the color scheme of two different rooms by simply reversing the same.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a reversible settee with a reversible leg support adapted to be fitted from the opposite sides of the settee by a simple screwing operation and which requires little time to perform.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a reversible settee which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, convenient to use and efficient in operation. v
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a settee embodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary and sectional view taken generally on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a reversible single settee or chair.
Referring now to the figures, represents a continuous back wall curved at its ends to provide end portions II and I2. These end portions are connected together by a seat portion I 3. The forward edge of the seat portion extends outwardly to lie flush with the forward edges of the side portions. I
Intermediate the length of the seat portion I3 is a threaded opening 14 into which a supporting leg l5 can be threaded. Thisnleg can be extended into this opening from the opposite sides of the seat depending upon the position of the settee. A closure plug having a rounded top surface as indicated at [6 can be used to fill the hole from the top surface. On the reverse faces of the seat portion [3 are respectively spring cushions Il having any color covering material.
On the back and extending about the end portions thereof are spring cushions [8. These cushions may be alike on the opposite sides of the settee as to the shape thereof, but may be of different color.
On the top edges of the back portion are spaced buttons [9 which may be of any color, but which protrude suificiently to provide adequate support of the settee on the floor. The upper edge of the back cushions may have a strip 2| extended therearound and secured by means of the usual upholstery tacks. The seat I! is shown made of one piece, but it will be understood that the same can be made of several pieces or cushions being of the same, opposite, or a combination of two colors. If desired, the buttons [9 can be replaceable and ornamental pieces or plugs inserted. The coverings may be of leather, cloth, mohair, leather substitute, or of any other well known coverings.
The back portion and the seat portion can be of wood, aluminum, or any standard construction.
In Fig. 3, there is shown a chair arrangement formed in a similar manner to the settee and comprising a back portion 22 with a seat portion 23 fitted into the same. The back portion extends the same distance from the seat portion on the opposite side thereof. Back cushions 24, constructed as above mentioned, are secured to the seat back and on the seat portion are seat cushions 25. The usual buttons l9 are provided on the edges of the back portion. These buttons support the chair upon the floor.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of my invention, what is claimed is:
1. A settee comprising a back and end portions, a seat portion extending intermediate the height of the back and between the end portions, cushions on the opposite faces of the seat portion, cushions on the back at the opposite sides of the seat portion, and supporting members on the edges of the back and end portions for supporting the seat in one position or in the reverse position, with the cushion outof contact with the floor.
2. A settee comprising a back having end portions, a seat portion extending intermediate the height of the back and between the end portions, cushions on the opposite faces of the seat portion, cushions on the back at the opposite sides of the seat portion, and supporting members on the edges of the back and end portions for supporting the seat in one position or in the reverse position, said seat'portion having an opening at the forward edge thereof and extending between the top and bottom faces, and a leg, means connecting said leg to the seat portion and into the opening from either the top or bottom surface and said leg beingadapted to support the seat portion intermediate its length, and a plug removably fitting the opening at either side of the UNITED STATES PATENTS Number Name Date Seat 1,082,884 Leonard Dec. 30, 1913 3. A settee as defined m claim 2 and a plug 1 413 901 Coray Apr 25 1922 adapted to fit the opening in the seat portion, 5 1586'125 speeglg 1926 said plug being removable and adapted to fit the 2'430241 Nicholas Nov 1927 o' iening at either side of the seat portion.
