M. A. SMITH.
4 communism- 011 AND LOCAL TICKET CASE. NO. 254,399. Patented Feb. 28,1882.
UNITED STATE PATENT OFFICE.
MYRON A. SMITH, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
COMBINED COUPON'AND LOCAL TICKET CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,399, dated February as, 18252.
Application filed December 5, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MYRON A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at- Elmira, in the county of Ohemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Coupon and Local Ticket Gases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a case for passage-tickets which shall be adapted to occupy the least possible space, and provide at the same time ample facilities for the classified storage of the greatest number of different tickets, both local and coupon, and to permit of ready access to each class of either kind of tickets as demanded by the circumstances that usually surround ticket-agents, which are limited space and accommodations for rapidly supplying both local and coupon tickets in the shortest possible time, and to the greatest possible number of applicants therefor.
The arrangement oftickets of differentkinds, as local and coupon, in different cases is extremely inconvenient, especially during arush, and the agents attention is divided from the ,matters of cost, amount, and genuineness of the money proffered, the identity of the personproffering the same, to the correct selection of the particular ticket required, and the locality of the particular case in which it is stored, all of which confusion can be readily averted by using but a single case, provided it, be so constructed and arranged that each kind or class of tickets is systematically arranged, and provided, further, that such arrangement and construction permit a compact storage of and ready access to each class and kind of tickets.
With these objects in view my invention consists in a ticket-case constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
Figure 1. is a perspective of a combined local and coupon ticket case embodying my invention and represented in an open condition.
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A represents sides, B the back. and G the bottom, of a ticket-case which is provided with slats a, having hooks for the suspension of conpon-tickets, the slats being arranged in steps, and the sides of the case being slanted to conform therewith, all as usually constructed.
To the upper end or top of the case is hinged a cover, D, adapted to close the coupon-section of the case only. The cover D, it desired, may
be in sections and hinged transversely or to the sides A. v I
To the front edge of the bottom G is pivotally attached the front proper, E, of the case by means of hinges o. The front, if desired, may pass within the sides, and stand, when closed, flush with the front edges of said sides, when a simple pin passing through the side and into the end of the front, near itsbottom edge, would serve as a' hinge, which would not carry the front below the bottom Gwhen opened.
To the inner surface of the front E, I attach the local-ticket case F, which consists of a series of pigeon-holes or cells, f, which may, if desired, be arranged in a common horizontal plane and of uniform depth, when, as the front is opened, they would be presentedin a slanted position, which would expose more clearly the ends of the uppermost tickets in all the cells; but if so arranged less coupon ticket slats could be used, as the local case would require more vertical space in its movement when opened and closed. Hence I prefer to arrange the local-case cells in steps, as shown, those in the front row being highest, and each row succeeding being located a trifle below its predecessor, so that the distance from the hinge cto the upper rear edge of rear row of cells is much reduced, and space sufiicient for one or more additional coupon-slats is saved.
The outward movement of the front E is limited by the bar Gr,pivotal iy attached thereto at g and carrying the pin h, which projects into upon the inner surfaces of the sides A, serve to secure the front in a closed position. The front is also provided with a look, a, the bolt of which enters the lower edge of the cover D when closed, thus securely locking the case.
At P is pi votally attached to one of the sides A a prop, It, which, when the case is closed, lies upon the slats, and when the cover D is raised serves to retain it in open condition by its end resting in a suitable notch or depression, 0, formed in the cov r, as clea ly shown.
The use and operation of my invention are obvious from the description given; and it-will be observed that as thecoupon-slats arein steps descending from rear to front, the longest tickets are arranged at the rear and the shortest at the front; and the local-ticket cells being arranged in steps descending from front to rear, they conform to the arrangement of the coupon -tiekets, and do not interfere therewith when the case is closed.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. A ticket caseprovided With coupon-ticket slats arranged in steps and with local-ticket cells arranged in steps, the former-located above and oppositely arranged to the latter, whereby the longer coupon-tickets are, when the case is closed, arranged above the lower local tickets, and vice versa, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a combined coupon and local ticket case, the combination of an upper series of coupon-slats arrangedindescendingstepsfromrear to front, and a lower local-ticket case the cells of which are arranged in descending steps from front to rear, and are adapted to be swung in under and out from beneath said coupon-ticket slats, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a ticketcase, the combination of a slanted coupon-ticket section provided with hooks and a cover, with atilting local-ticket section provided with eyes and a lock, substantially as shown and described.
4-. In a ticket-case, the tilting front E, provided with rigidly-attached ticket-cells the bottoms of which are arranged in steps descending from front to rear, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MYRON A. SMITH.
