Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
oHARLEs s. BEATH, or EsoANABA, Mio-HIGAN.
olacuLAR sAwlNe lvlAoHlNl-z.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,833, dated July 5, 1881.
Application filed April 27, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, CHARLES SMITH BEATH, of Escanaba, in the county of Delta and State of Michigan, have invented a new and lmproved sawing-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists of a circular saw mounted on a swinging gate, of a frame provided with a roller-table for the log or poles to be cut, and with an adjustable gage, which swinging gate is provided with pulleys for maintaining a uniform tension of the drivingbelt, and is drawn inward by spiral springs, but is drawn outward, when the saw is to cut, by means of a rope or chain attached to the swinging gate and to a lever pivoted to the end of the frame and acted upon bya pivoted bent lever.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved sawing-machine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line .r w, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same.
The circular saw A is rigidly mounted on the end of a shaft, B, journaled on the upper end of a swinging gate, C, pivoted to the base of the frame D of the sawing-machine.
A belt-pulley, E, is rigidly mounted on the shaft B, and a pulley, F, is mounted on the shaft pivoting the gate C to the frame D. This gate G is provided with two downward` projecting arms, G G, and on the shafts connecting these arms the pulleys H and J are mounted, the former at the middle of the arms Gr and the latter at the ends.
. A driving-belt, K, passes around the pulleys E, F, H, and J, and around a pulley, L, on the shaft L of the main driving-pulley M.
The journalboxes of the shaft L are attached to screwrods N, by mea-ns of which the tension of the belt K can be adjusted.
The swinging Ygate O is drawn inward-that is to say, from the lcg-receiving table-by one or two spiral or other springs, O O, attachedV to the gate and to the frame D. Arope, chain, or belt, l?, is attached to the front of the swinging gate C, and, passing through a staple, Q, or over a pulley at the front end of the machine, is attached to a lever, R, pivoted to the front end of the frame D. Another lever, S, is pivoted to the front end of the frame D, and the lower curved end, S', of this lever rests on the lever B, as shown in Fig. 3. By drawing the lever S inthe direction of the arrow a the lever B will be depressed, as indicated bythe arrow b', and the swinging frame C will be drawn forward, as indicated by the arrow c.
The log-receiving table consists of two bars, T, connected by a series of rollers, U.
A gage to regulate the length of the blocks that are cut off is formed of a longitudinallyslotted bar, V, provided with a rectangular arm, W, at one end, and held on the frame D D by the screws X, passing through the slot of this bar V, and thus permitting of an adjustment of the gage.
A bar, Y, is h'eld to the side ofthe frame D, outside of the saw and parallel with the same, by a series of arms, Z Z. Y Upon this bar that part ofthe log that is being cut off rests, and consequently it will not be jammed against the side of the saw while the'cut is being made. `The block that is being cut rests on this barB until the cut is completed, when it tilts and drops.
The operation is as follows: The log rests upon the roller-table, and is pushed forward until its end rests against the arm W of the gage V, which has been previously adjusted according to the sizeof the blocks desired.
The log` is at right angles to the saw, and if by the lever R is raised and the lever S swings back in thel reverse direction of the arrow a. lf the gate G swings forward in the direction of the arrow a', the pulleyH is raised and the belt K would be slackened; but at the same time the pulley J is raised, and as this pulley presses against the belt K it draws the belt taut again, and the tension of the belt is always maintained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a sawing-machine, the combination, with the frame D, of the saw A, and a swing- IOO ing gate, C, provided with arms G, and of the L', the driving-pulley M, and the screw-rods pulleys E F on the gate C, and the pulleys H N, for adjusting the journal-boxes of the shaft [o .lon the arms G, substantiallyas herein shown L,substantiallyas herein shown and described, and described, and for the purpose set forth. and for the purpose set forth.
5 2. In a sawiugmachine, the combination, CHARLES SMITH BEATH.
with the frame D, of the saw A, the swinging Witnesses: gate C, provided with arms G, the pulleys JUSTIN N. MEAD,
E F H J, the belt K, the pulley L, the shaft HOMER L. MEAD.
