UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. BAGLEY, OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS.
JEWELING OF WATCHES, CLOCKS, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Application filed May 31, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. BAGLEY, of Elgin, in the county of Kane, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Jeweling of Watches, Clocks, 8250.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an enlarged perspective view of my improved jewel setting and confining clamp and of a bridge recessed to receive the same, the parts being separated from each other. Fig. 2 is a like view of said parts as combined, and Fig. 3 is a section of the same upon line aa" of Fig. 2.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to lessen the expense, to increase the security, and to render more easy of adjustment to and removal from position of watch-jewels; and it consists, as a means for confiningjewels in place, in a clamp having one end fitted over and caused to embrace a jewel-setting and its opposite end adapted to receive a screw and fitted within a recess in a plate which receives and contains said setting and clamp, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawings, A represen's a jewel set within a ring of metal, B, which has the usual general form, and at or near its lower edge is provided with an outward-projecting ledge or fiange, b, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3.
The jewel A and its setting B are fitted within a recess, 0, that surrounds an opening, 0, in a plate or bridge, C, and is confined in place by means of a clamp consisting of a plate, D, which has the form in plan view of two disks joined together at their edges, one of its ends-preferably that formed by the larger disk-being provided with an opening, (I, that enables it to pass over the said setting B and rest upon the flange I), while the opposite end has an opening, d, for the passage of a screw, E.
No. 243,828, dated July 5, 1881.
(N0 model.)
The plate 0 is provided with a recess, 0, which receives the clamp D and permits the same, when in position, to be wholly contained therein, the upper face of said clamp being flu sh with the upper face of said plate, in which position the former is confined so as to securely hold the jewel and its setting by means of the screw E, which passes through said clamp into said plate.
The clamp, with the jewel and setting, is so closely fitted within the plate as to be incapable of lateral movement, so that the only office performed by the screw is the confining of said parts within their recesses, instead, as heretofore, of being substantially all that prevented lateral movement of the jewel.
The clamp described may be punched out with dies so perfectly as to require no dressing of its edges, while the recess for its reception may be formed by cutting into the plate two circular intersecting cavities, so that the cost of my method of setting jewels is comparatively small.
While the form of clamp described is preferably employed, any other form which admits of a like use will answer the same purpose and will be within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new As a means for confiningjewels in place, a clamp having one end fitted over and caused to embrace ajewel'setting and its opposite end adapted to receive a screw and fitted within a recess in a plate which receives and contains said setting and clamp, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of 8 May, 1881.
CHARLES H. BAGLEY.
