Claims. (Cl. 299-115) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in spray nozzles, and more particularly to spray nozzles for automatic sprinkler and like systems.
It is known that fires in general, and certain types of fires in particular, may be more effectively combatted and extinguished by the use of water in the form of a fog or very finely divided spray than by the use of the conventional type spray of a number of small streams of water, and the principal object of the present invention is :to provide a novel and improved nozzle which is constructed and arranged to produce an extremely finely divided spray or fog.
Another object of the invention is to provide a nozzle of the character set forth which may be employed effectively in automatic sprinkler systems and like installations.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved spray nozzle having the described features and characteristics which are of comparatively simplified and inexpensive construction and highly efficient and foolproof in operation and use.
These and other objects of the invention, and the various features and details of the construction and operation thereof, are hereinafter fully set forth and described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the discharge end of a nozzle made according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the nozzle disclosed in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 3-3, Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44, Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on line 5-5, Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing, a spray nozzle made according to the present invention is generally designated by reference numeral I and comprises a body 2 and a discharge tip 3. The body 2 includes inlet and outlet portions 4 and 5, respectively, between which there is provided an enlarged general spherical or bulbous portion 6. The discharge tip 3 is provided with an externally threaded skirt portion 1 of reduced diameter which is. screwed inwardly of the end of the outlet portion 5 of the body 2 as shown, and a suitable gasket 8 is interposed between the adjacent annular faces of the body 2 and tip 3 to provide a fluid-tight joint therebetween.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the inlet portion 4 of the body 2 may be exerally conically shaped portion ternally threaded at its end as indicated at 9 for connection, for example, to the outlet pipe ID of a conventional sprinkler system. The inlet portion 4 also may be provided on its exterior with a hexagonal or similar portion l l adapted to receive a wrench or the like which may be employed to connect or disconnect the nozzle I from the pipe [0.
At its inner end the inlet portion 4 of the body 2 opens into a generally spherical chamber l2 which is contained within and defined by the enlarged bulbous body portion 6, and formed integrally with the body 2 and extending inwardly of this chamber l2 from the outlet side thereof is a partition structure comprising a cylindrical Wall portion I3 which terminates in a transverse end wall portion l4 that is disposed substantially centrally and crosswise of the chamber l2. Extending from this transverse end wall portion l4 coaxially of the body 2 through and beyond the outlet portion 5 thereof to a point adjacent the end of the discharge tip 3 is a genl5 which, together with the end wall [4, the cylindrical wall [3 and the outlet end portion 5 of the body :2, forms and defines within said body 2 an annular passage l6 which extends from the chamber I2 through the outlet portion 5 substantially to the discharge tip 3.
Communication from the chamber l2 to the annular passage I6 is provided by means of ports or openings I! and I8, respectively, formed in the wall portion l3 at diametrically opposite sides thereof and adjacent the transverse end wall Hi. These ports H and I8 are arranged as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing so that water or other liquid passing therethrough from the chamber it into the annular passage l6 enters the latter in a direction substantially tangent thereto.
As best shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, the outer end of the conically shaped portion I5 is provided with a radially extending flange portion 19, and the end face of said conical member I5 is counterbored as shown to provide therein a coaxial conical recess 20. A plurality of longitudinally extending ports or passages 2| are provided through the flanged and recessed end portion of the conical member I5 and these passages 2| are arranged circumferentially with respect to the member I5 at equally spaced intervals.
The end of the discharge tip 3 which lies in out wardly spaced relation with respect to the end of the conical member I5 is provided with a coaxial discharge opening 22 constructed and arranged, for example, as shown in the drawing and the diameter of this discharge opening 22 and the arrangement of the ports or passages 2! in the flanged outer end of the conical member l5 are such that the said several ports or passages 2| have their axes substantially in alignment with the inner edge 23 of the discharge opening 22 through the tip 3.
In operation of a spray nozzle constructed as herein described, Water or other liquid u'n'de'r pressure enters the chamber I2 of the body 2 through the inlet portion 4 thereof from the pipe 53,1

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the present -invention' provides novel and improved nozzle-,whichisoperable to produce an extremely finely divided spray orfog.
In addition, the invention providesafnozzle of the fog-producing type which may-be employed effectively in automatic sprinkler. systems and like installations and which is dfcornp'ara'tively simplified andinexpensive 'construction that is highly efficient and foolproof in operation 'and use. I
