The novel features ofthe'invention will be best understood'from the following-description, when taken together with the accompanyingdrawing, in which certain embodimentsofthe invention are disclosed and in which the separate parts are designated by suitable :reference characters ineach ofsthe views .and inrwhich:

Y This application constitutes .aicontinuation in part oimy. prior. applicationls'erial Numberi-552,- 079;filed .-August 31,1944. '5 r In :various .types othelectrical. terminals to which connectors or couplings are attached, often times difficulty is experienced in freeing or detaching the connector or coupling from the terminal. This is particularly true in connection with battery terminals, especially as used upon motor vehicles.
With my improved connector or coupling construction, I provide means for spreading a split connector or coupling after the clamping bolt has been loosened in order to free the connector or coupling from the terminal to which it has been attached. Still further, when connectors or couplings of this kind have become frozen upon the terminals, means is also provided to pull the connector or coupling from the terminal after the same has been spread in the manner previously described. While my invention is adaptable for use in connection with more or less standard types of couplings, that is to say, couplings which do not employ the pulling attachment, in the present illustrations of the inmention the sarne *has been applied to devices incorporatingthe pullin attachmenu. theidevices showlngi twdidiiferent types and kinds of attachments for the oonduotorzcable.

The connector I2 will be drawn or pulled upwardly and freed from the terminal II. The screw 26 has a rotatable mounting 29 in the member 28, so as to prevent rotation of the member on the terminal in the operation of pulling the connector.
With the present construction, the arms M include outward extensions 30, one of which is preferably provided with a cut-away inner surface SI and the other of which is provided with an outwardly extending enlarged portion 32, providing a long bearing for a spreader screw 33, which is in threaded engagement with the last mentioned arm, including its enlargement 32, a suitable head 34 being provided for the rotation 3 of the screw. The screw 33 bears upon the inner surface 3| to spread the arms [4 when the bolt H5 is loosened. This operation will in most instances expand the bore of the sleeve l3 sufficiently to free the sleeve from the terminal H, thus providing free removal of the connector. However, in some instances, where the connector becomes frozen upon part of the wall structure of the terminal, it may be necessary to pull the connector from the terminal and, in such instances, the pull screw 23 is operated.
The cut-away portion, as at 3|, is provided primarily to provide full and complete clamping of the sleeve l3 upon the terminal I I, in other words, in maintaining as great a clearancebetween adjacent surfaces of the extensions 30 as provided between adjacent surfaces of the arms M.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing is shown a slight modification, wherein the connector 35 has a sleeve portion 36 similar to the sleeve 13, projecting arms 37, similar to the arms l4 coupled together by a bolt 38; extensions on the arms similar to the extensions 30 and a spreader screw 40 similar to the screw 33.
The connector 35, instead of having the coupling as at [1, is provided with a radially extending tubular socket portion 4| for receiving a conductor or cable end 42, the latter being held in the socket by a set screw 43, as in other devices of this kind.
Extending upwardly from the socket 4| is a bracket 44 having a reinforcing rib, as indicated Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A terminal connector of the class described, said connector comprising a split sleeve having a pair of projecting arms at the split portion of the sleeve and arranged in spaced relationship to each other, means engaging the arms of said sleeve for clamping the sleeve on a terminal, and a screw in threaded engagement with one of said arms and having a bearing upon the inner surface of other of said arms for spreading said arms in the sleeve and arranged in spaced relationship at 45 and a projection 46 arranged axially above the sleeve 36.
In the projection 46 of the bracket is arranged a pull screw 41 similar to the screw 26 and having a bearing cup 48 similar to the cup 28. Aside from the different form of bracket employed, the structure of Fig. 3 diifers primarily from the structure, shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in the provision of the radial socket 4| for mounting the conductor or cable. The coupling H, as will clearly appear in Fig. 2 of the drawing, adapts the connector for arrangement to the conductor at a position at right angles to the radial line or at what might be termed a tangent to the sleeve of the connector.
As previously stated, in many uses and, particularly, where the connectors are frequently coupled and uncoupled with respect to the terminals, the use of the pulling attachment is not required. In such instances, this attachment will not be employed on the connector and the spreader attachment alone will be provided.
to each other, means engaging the arms of said sleeve for clamping the sleeve on a terminal, said arms having extensions, one extension having an enlarged portion, a screw in threaded engagement with said enlarged portion of said extension, the other of said extensions having a cut-away inner bearing surface spacin the extensions of said arms a greater distance apart than the spacing between adjacent surfaces of said arms, and said screw being adapted to engage the bearing surface of the second named extension in spreading the arms to free said sleeve from a terminal engaged thereby.
