Description

Nov. 18,1947. M. J. DUTRA DESTRUCTION REMOVING ATTACHMENT FOR DRAINS Filed Aug. 4, '1944 In venfor Patented Nov. 18,- 1947 UNITED STATI-:s PATENT OFFICE Manuel J. Dutra, Sacramento, Calif., assignor of twenty-live percent to Joseph Dutra, Sacramento, Calif.
Application August 4, 1944, Serial No. 548,093
1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for opening clogged drains in sinks, washtubs and the like and for removing obstructions therein, and the invention has for its primary object to provide a container having a compartment therein adapted to hold gravel or other ne hard pellets and also providing a water passage through the container into which the pellets may be discharged and connecting the water passage at one end to the drain and connecting its other end to a faucet for flushing the drain and forcing the pellets therethrough so that the action of the pellets being forced through the drain by the Water will scrape the sides of the trap and drain to clear the same of obstructions therein.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eflicient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and, claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the obstruction removed shown attached to the drain and to the water faucet and with parts broken away and shown in section.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the container and illustrating a modified form of plug for attaching the device to the drain.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on a line 3--3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on a line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a substantially conical container having its smaller end open and formed with threads B adapted for engagement by the upper edge of a hollow rubber plug 'I formed with an annular horizontal iiange 8 adapted for resting on the upper edge of a drain pipe 9, the bottom portion of the plug being tapered as shown at I for snugly fitting in pipes of various sizes.
The container is formed with a vertical partition II connected at its upper edge to the top I2 of the container and connected at its lower edge to a sloping wall I3 cooperating with the 2 partition II to form a chamber I4 in the container adapted to hold a quantity of gravel or other hard pellets I5.
A cap I6 is threaded on a neck I'I in the top I2 of the container to aiord access to the compartment I4 for supplying the latter with the gravel or pellets.
'I'he lower portion of the partition I I is formed with a discharge opening I8 which is controlled by a sliding door or closure I9 supported in guides 2U on the outer surface of the partition, the closure I9 projecting upwardly through the top I2 and formed with a linger grip 2|.
The remainder of the container 5 forms a water passage 22 extending verticallx7 therethrough, the top I2 of the container having a nipple 23 attached thereto communicating with the passage 22 and to which a rubber hose 24 may be connected for attaching to a water faucet 25.
In the operation of the device with the plug 'I positioned in the drain pipe 9 and the hose 24 attached to the faucet 25 water under pressure may be supplied to the pipe 9 through the passage 22 and at the same time the closure I9 raised to permit discharge of a quantity of the pellets or gravel I5 through the opening I8 for passing downwardly through the opening I8 for passing downwardly through the container with the water, the gravel or pellets coming into contact with the walls of the pipe 9 to remove sediment or other obstructions formed thereon.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings, a modified plug 26 of bulbous formation is provided having a tapered lower portion 2'I adapted to tightly t in the pipe 9 and also having a threaded upper edge 28 adapted for engagement with the threads 6 of the container 5. The plug is formed with openings in its upper and lower ends for the passage of the water and gravel therethrough.
It is believed the details of construction and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having described the claimed as new is:
An obstruction remover for sink drains and comprising a container, a compartment in the container adapted to contain pellets, said compartment having one side spaced from a wall of the container to provide a water passage therein, said compartment having a sloping bottom and an opening in said one side at the bottom thereof, a closure for the opening slidably mountinvention, what is 3 4 ed in the cont/atinelgel hose attaohed to the upper UNITED STATES PATENTS end of the passage 1n the contamer and adapted for attaching to a. faucet, and a anged hollow Number Nlme Date rubber plug attached at the lower end of the con- 772352 Spalding Oct 18' 1904 tainer and adapted for tting in a sink drain. 5 113211789 BoreeSOn Sept. 1, 1931 J.
