UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS F. GRISWOLD, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO FOSTER, MERRIAMSE 00., OF SAMEPLACE.
DRAWER-PU LL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,770, dated June 14, 1881.
Application filed March 17, 1881. (No model.) C
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS F. GRIswoLD, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Drawer Pulls or Hangers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, fbrminga part of this specification, in explaining its nature, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof; Fig. 3, a crosssection on the line X X of Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views representing modifications r 5 in construction; and Fig. 6 is a view representing a variation in the construction of the stop, hereinafter specified.
It is desirable that hangers or pulls for drawers, 860., be so secured to their supports that they shall not swing back against the face of the drawer or other article to which they may be attached; and my invention relates to means for easily and economically accomplishing this result.
A represents the hanger or pull. It may be made of any desirable shape, and its arms a are provided with lugs or ears a, which are secured to the studs, stumps, or projections B by means of the pins b, the pins serving as hinges in connecting the hanger to the studs or stumps. The pins may be cast solid with the lugs or cars and project into holes formed in the studs or stumps, or they may be cast solid with the studs or stumps and project into 3 5 holes in the ears. The last-named construction is shown in detail in Fig. 4, and the firstnamed in detail in Fig. 5. Of course, the pins may be made separately and attached in any desirable manner to either the ears or the 0 stumps. The stumps or studs are formed upon or attached to the end of the screw-thread rods or spindle C. The studs or spindles may be connected by an ornamental plate, 1), which may be fastened to them in any desirable man- 4 5 nor, and I represent in Figs. 2 and 3 the studs or stumps provided with aprojection, 0 forming a stop, against which the plate D is held by means of solder, or in any other desirable' way.
The studs or stumps B are formed as shown in Fig. 3 at 6, so as to act as a stop, against which the inner side of the pull. or hanger shall come in contact when not in use, whereby the hanger or pull is prevented from coming in contact with the face of the drawer. This stop, 5 5
however, may be formed by shaping the ears to on the hanger or pull, as shown in Fig. 6, so that they shall come in contact with a projection on the studs or stumps, or with the face of the drawer, and thereby prevent the hanger or pull from swinging back against the front of the drawer or other article. The upper-surface of the stump or stud may act in connection with the under surface of the hanger or pull as a stop to prevent the hanger or pull from injuring the drawer by being moved or swung upwardly against it; but provision for this purpose may be obtained by shaping the ear as shown inFig. 6.
The uses and advantages of this invention have been explained in connection with its construction.
1 am aware that Patent N 0. 109,964, dated December 6, 1870; Reissue No. 7,498, dated February 6, 1877; Patent No. 123,398, dated 7 February 6, 1872, and No. 234,139, dated November 9, 1880, show and describe certain methods of attaching a single pull or hanging knob to a support, whereby the knob is prevented from coming in contact with the thing or article to which it is fastened; but I consider that the improvements therein described relate to a different class of handles, and do not embrace the spirit of my invention, which appertains to the class of handles known as 8 hangers, and which hanger has two points of connection with the article to which it is attached.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, in a handle for drawers or other articles, of the studs or stumps B, shaped as specified, the plate 1), connecting thestumps,
means for securing them to the drawer or other 5 article, with the hanger A and its ears a, cast thereon and shaped as described, and the pivots or pins b, made fast either to the stump or ears, all substantially as set forth.
L; F. GRISWOLD.
