Application March 10,
6 Claims.
This invention relates generally to a bottle carrier, and more particularly to a device whereby bottles may be carried away by purchasers of the same, in a simple, inexpensive and efficient manner.
The invention has among its objects the production of such a bottle carrier that will be extremely easy to make and use, rapidly applied to and removed from the bottles as required, of minimum ize so as not to be cumbersome in use, and otherwise satisfactory and efficient for use wherever deemed applicable.
One of the principal objects of this invention is to so construct a device of the kind described, that it will be made of but a single piece of material, will have no cooperating parts likely to get out of order, and yet be perfectly suited for the intended function of temporary carriage of bottled goods.
Another object of my invention is to provide a carrier for bottled goods, that will permit of the latter'to be inserted through an opening in the carrier and thence shifted away from the point of entry, so as to be carried by the neck of the bottle in engagement with the carrier.
A further object of this invention is to so construct devices of the kind aforesaid, in such a manner and shape that they may be superimposed vertically on one another, for storage and shipment, and will occupy the least amount of space while stored or in transit.
An added object of 'my invention is to so shape the said carrier that a considerable substantially flat surface is provided thereon, for the imprint ing, embossing or otherwiseapplied advertising matter thereon, if desired. 7
A stil1 further object of this invention is to provide a device of the kind described, wherein there will be an elongated opening tllough the carrier, this opening being sufficiently enlarged at a point of its length to permit of the capped end of a bottle to be inserted therethrough, said bottled goods then shifted along the opening and away from said enlarged portion, so as to be suspended by its neck when the carrier member is lifted.
Another added object of my invention is to so construct the elongated opening in the carrier element, that it will be at least long enough to permit of insertion of one or more fingers of the carrying hand therethrough, after the bottle or bottles have been operably inserted into the opening, and whereby said fingers act to provide stops against accidental displacement of the bottles from the opening during transportation.
1945, Serial No. 582,000
Many other objects and advantages of the con struction herein shown and described, and the uses mentioned, will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, as will be more clearly apparent from the disclosures hereinafter given.
To this end, my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, as herein shown and described and as will be more clearly pointed out in, the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters represent like or corresponding parts throughout the views,
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view, taken sub-, stantially along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the carrier in use.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, there is shown a one-piece member I, stamped or otherwise formed out of plastic, wood, paperboard, metal, etc., as desired so long as the sheet will be sufficiently rigid and sturdy to substantially retain its shape while carried with the load therein.
This sheet is provided with one or more openings or slots 2-2 therethrough, there being a pair of such openings in the present instance, extending longitudinally of the sheet and spaced apart throughout their length,
Each slot is provided with an enlargement 3 at some point Of its. length, to permit of the capped endof a bottle to be extended therethrough, while the remaining length of the slot is reduced in width to approximately the diameter of the bottle neck slightly below said cap. Thus, the bottles may be successively threaded with their capped ends uppermost, through the said enlargements and then shifted transversely away from said enlargements, so that said bottles so shifted will be suspended at their necks in said reduced portions of the slots when the carrier member is lifted for service.
The slots 2-2 are preferably slightly longer than the space occupied by the bottles as carried therein, and preferably terminate adjacent one end of the carrier member, so that in carrying the loaded member, the fingers of the carrying hand may be inserted through the uppermost ends of the slots, and will serve effectively as limit stops against longitudinal movement in that direction, of the bottles so carried.
In addition, and to facilitate comfortable caropening and away from said 4 ing at that end by insertion of the fingers of a hand through said opening thereat for carrying with a bottle suspended in the opening.
4. A substantially fiat sheet having an elong- V gated opening with an enlarged portion to permit free passage of the capped end of a bottle therethrough and sliding of the bottle along said opening and away from said enlargement'to suspend the bottle by its neck, :and another opening through said sheet and spaced from the first opening to permit insertion of different fingers "through both openings together when carrying substantially vertical, but they will not drop out of the carrier, inasmuch as they will engage the reduced portions of the slots at the bottle necks, and the top beads or enlargements of the bottles thereabove, and the caps themselves, will abso-' lutely prevent the bottles passing freely downwardly except at the enlarged opening points 3, and even then, the fingers must be withdrawn from carrying position to permit of the bottles being manually unthreaded from the carrier.
Having thus described my invention, it is 'obvious thatl do not wish to be limited to the exact form, arrangement, constructionand combinaton, of parts herein shown and described, 'eX-' cept as limited by, the hereunto appended.
What I claim. as. new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.. A bottle carriercomprising a substantially flatjrigid .sh'e'et having anelongated opening to permit passage of the capped endozf 'a bottle therethrough andreduced in size away from said enlarged portion, it'ojsuspend abottle from .said reduc'edportion of the-opening, said opening be-, ing long, enoughjto permit passin'gthe fingers through the same after said bottle has been, so suspended to carry the device and act as a bottleengageable St Op tOIpIGVGIIDmOVEmGIIt of the bottle in the carrier-while in carrying use.
2. "A 'bottle c'arrier comprising a substantially one-piecelvri'gid sheet ofm'a'terial having anelongated opening enlarged at one point of its length to permit passage of thetcapped end of a, bottle prior art, and the claims therethrough and reduced at other, portions of its length to suspend the bottle by its neck in said opening, gatedto permit the thumb and fingers of the hand'en'gaging on opposite sides of said sheet with the fingers passing through said opening toprovide a bottle-engageable stop against movement in one sliding direction of the carried bot,- tle while carrying the device.
3,. A one-piece bottle carrier comprising a supporting sheet having an elongated opening sufficiently enlarged at one point to permit passagelof the capped end of a bottle therethrough, and reduced in; width away ment sojt'hat the bottle may be shifted along said enlargement to suspend the bottle by .theneckoin thereduced portion of the opening, said, openinggterminating adjacent one end of said openingbeing sufiiciently elon-v from said enlarge- 1 the Sheet to permit grasp.-
. said sheet with a bottle suspended in the first opening. 7
5. In a device of the kind described, a relatively rigid sheet having a pair of spaced apart longitudinally extending openings each enlarged at one point to permit'passage of capped bottles in sequence therethrough and each opening reduced in width away from said enlargement so, that when the bottles are shifted away from said point of -'entry'after passage through said l enlargement, they will ,be suspended at the reduced portions of the openings, both of said openings terminating sufficiently closely adjacent oneend of the sheet, to permit the fingers to be inserted through said openings from one face of the sheet and the thumb overlie the opposite it-ace of the sheet to carry the device.
6. In a bottle carrier, a one-piece member made of a rigid sheet provided with a pair of,
elongated openings each having an enlargement at one end of the sheet to permit passage of the capped end of bottles therethrough and reduced in width away from said enlargement 'so that said bottles 'may be shifted in sequence away from said enlargements after being passed through the latter, and another opening through said sheet intermediate said pair of openings adjacent said enlargements, and whereby the device having the bottles suspended therein may be carried by using the hand to straddle said end of the sheet with fingersthrough the pair of elongated openings to form a stop against displacement of the bottles through said enlarge 7 through said inter mediate opening, and withthe thumb arranged ments, with another :finger at the opposite side of said sheet. 7 I S REFERENCES CITE!)v The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
