- ARKANSAS.
CLOT H MEASURING AND REGISTERING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,642, dated June '7, 1881. Application filed October 19, [880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that we, CHARLES C. HENDER- soN and JACOB R. HENDERSON, of Arkadelphia, in the county of Clark and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Im' provement in Cloth-Measuring Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to furnish a machine adapted for measuring heavy cloths, bagging, and similar materials in lengths, as desired, in place of the usual method of measuring by hand. More particularly the object is to wind the material from the roll upon a suitable drum, measure the material as it is wound, and provide an indicator of the amount rolled off, so that the desired quantity can be wound and then out off.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the machine.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line.
as m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the Windlass, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the machine, showing the registering mech anism.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The frame of the machine consists of side standards, A A, securedvfirmly to a suitable base, B.
At the front and lower part of the machine is a drum or Windlass, 0, having hearings in brackets to, and provided with a crank-handle, b, for its operation.
Between the upper part of standards A, and having bearings therein, is fitted a drum or roll, D, the circumference of which is a yard or other defined measurement. The surface of this drum is provided with'pointed pins 0, for entering the cloth or bagging, to insure rotation of the drum as the cloth passes over.'
At the front of the machine, between roller D and Windlass O, a board, E, is supported by cross-bars d, that are fixed on standards A. The face of the board E is inclined to correspond with a line from the surface of roller D to Windlass E, so that the material may pass over andlie upon the board, or nearly so. In the board E is a slot, 0, which permits cutting of the material readilyas it lies upon the board. Above the slot hooks f are fixedfor retaining the cut end in place and terial from running back. At the back and lower part of the machine is fitted a shaft, 9, adapted for receiving the roll of material. This shaft will be fitted repreventing the in amovably in its bearings for convenience in 5 shaft carries a pinion, which connects by a train of gearing withfa pinion on the shaft of drum D. Beneath dial 1' is a friction-roller, l, fitted to bear on the edge of the dial to retain the same in place by friction, and at the same time permitting the dial to be turned by hand.
The dial is marked and numbered in yards and subdivisions of yards.
In operation the end of the cloth or bagging is attached on Windlass (J, and the latter then turned to wind thematerial until the desired quantity is indicated by the poi-nteron the dial. The material is then cut on the board E. Before commencing toiwind the dial will be turned to bring its zero-point to the pointer.
To permit removal of the Windlass from the machine, and the rollof materi al from the windlass, one of the supporting-brackets a is hinged to swing outward, and a hook, 02, provided for connection with an eye or staple on the bracket for retaining the latter in place.
The Windlass-barrel has its central portion removed by a cut from one end to near'the other end, and the piece 0 at one side of the cut is connected to the main portion of the barrel by pivoted links pp, which retain the piece 0 offset from the main portion while the windlass is in place. By moving piece 0 endwise the barrel is reduced in size and the roll of cloth may be readily removed.
There may be ten s'ion-rolls fitted on the bars cl at the front of the machine, the measuringboard in that case being omitted. Such construction is shown at q. We may also use a pin, passing through the dial 6 and standard A, in place of the roller 1.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In measuringrmachines, the slotted cuttin g-board E, provided with hooks f, combined with measurin g-druin D and Windlass, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, in a cloth-measurer, of the drum D, having the pins 0, the Windlass O, theintermediate inclined board E, having
