While the foregoing statement is indicative of the nature of the invention, other more specific objects and advantages will be apparent to those skilled in the art upon a full understanding of the construction of the new mechanism.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is presented herein by way of exemplification, but it will of cours b appreciated that the invention is susceptible of incorporation in other structurally modified forms coming equally within the 7' scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a vertical section through the center of an automatic dispensing mechanism constructed in accordance with the invention, taken on the line I-I of Fig. 3, showing the mechanism in its non-feeding position;
Fig. 2 is a similar section, showing the mechanism in its feeding position and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the mechanism.
The mechanism shown in the drawing consists of a reservoir II! which is adapted to contain a substantial supply of the lubricant orother material to be fed. The reservoir is provided in its bottom with an outlet II, and the outlet is connected to a flexible conduit I2 which is adapted to extend to the part of the associated machine (not shown) where the lubricant is to be used. The reservoir is provided at one of its sides with a bracket I3 which is adapted to be attached to the machine.
The outlet II from the reservoir contains a conical valve seat I4 which is normally closed by a conical valve I5 on the lower end of a vertically reciprocable rod I6. The rod I6 is provided, beneath the valve I5, with a longitudinally slotted pilot portion I! which slidably fits within the outlet II and serves to maintain the valve centered with respect to the seat. The rod I6 is p0- sitioned within a tube l8, which tube is vertically reciprocable with respect to both the rod I6 and the reservoir I0. The tube I8 is provided at its r of movement of the particular part of the ma- 2 lower end with a bushing I9 which slidingly fits about the rod I6. The upper end of the tube I8 i bifurcated at 20 and slidingly embraces a bar 2I which is arranged crosswise of the top of the reservoir and is secured by screws 22 or other means to the sides of the latter.
The bar 2I carries a set screw 23 which extends downwardly from the bar through the center of the tube I8 to a point closely adjacent but normally spaced from the upp r end of the rod I6. The lower end of the screw 23 constitute an adjustably positioned stop which determines the extent to which the rod I6 will move upwardly upon each stroke of the machine and consequently the extent to which the valve I5 will be lifted from its seat on each stroke,
The upper end of the rod I6 is provided with an enlarged head 24 which slidingly fits within the tube I8. A coil spring 25 encompasses the rod I6 between the head 24 and the upper end of the bushing I9 in the tube I8. The spring 25 acts between the tube and the rod to raise the latter each time the tube is raised, but the spring is of such length as to exert no upward pressure on the rOd when the tube is in its lowered position. A second coil'spring 26 encompasses the screw 23 and is compressed axially between the lower edge of the bar 2I and the head 24 on the upper end of the rod I6. The spring 26 exerts enough pressure on the head 24 to re-seat the valve I5 and keep the same seated when the tube I8 is in its lowered position. The spring 25 is made to take a greater load than the spring 26, with the result that when the tube I8 is raised the spring 25 will further compress the spring 26 and will lift the rod I6 and consequently the valve I5 until the upward movement of the rod I6 is stopped by engagement of the head 24 with the lower end of the screw 23.
The tube I8 is adapted to be raised intermittently by the movement of some part of the associated machine-for example, the ram on a pressthroughthe intermediary of a lever 21 which is pivoted intermediate its ends at 28 to the upper end of the attaching bracket I3. The inner end of the lever 21 is bifurcated to loosely embrace the upper bifurcated end of the tube I8 and is pivotally connected to the latter by pins 29 in the sides of the tube which slidingly fit within elongated slots 30 in the bifurcated portion of the lever. The outer end of the lever 21 is provided with an impact portion 3| which is adapted to be arranged in the path of movement of the ram or other actuating part.
Where the mechanism is to be used with drawings 35 equipped with circularly directing tongues 35 above such openings.
By adjusting the position of the screw 23 in the arm 2! the extent to which the valve 15 Wi'l'lbe lifted from its seat l4 upon each oscillation of the lever 2! can be adjusted close limits ram or other part. After the screw 23 has been adjusted it can be secured in its adjusted'position by tightening a lock nut 31 on the screw against the upper edge of the bar 2|. The screw 23 can be turned'all of the way down against the head 24 of the rod L6in which event the mechanism will not feed any lubricant at all, or the screw 23 can be backed up toa point where .therod 16 Will move practically as a unit with the tube 18 throughout the full stroke of the latter, thus enabling any desired unit quantity of the lubricant to be dispensed upon'each stroke of the mechanism. The rate of feed of the mechanism 7 can .be regulated in this way with great exactness,
even while the mechanism is in operation.
I claim:
1. .Amechanism .for attachment to a .press or other machine for intermittently dispensing unit quantities of a fluid or semi-fluid material in conjunction with the operation of the machine, comprising a reservoir which is provided in its bottom with aneutlet, a valve seat in the outlet, a vertical-ly reciprocable rod provided adjacent its lower end with a valve which in its lowered position normallyengages the seat to close the outlet, a vertically reciprocable tube slidably encompassingand guiding relation to the rod, a lever operatively connected with the tube, which lever is adapted to be oscillated by a movable part of the associated machine to intermittently raise the tube, a spring acting between the tube and the rod to raise the rod each time the tube is raised, an adjustable stop in the path, of movement :of the rod for limiting the extent to which the rod is raised by the tube irrespective of the extent to which the tube is raised by the lever, and a second spring acting against the rod in opposition to the first spring to lower the rod when the tube is lowered,
2. A mechanism for attaclunent to a press or other machine for intermittently dispensing unit quantities of a fluid or semi-fluid material in conjunction with the operation of the machine, comprising a reservoir which is provided in its bottom and the rod to raise the rod each time the tube is raised, an adjustable stop in the path of movement of the rod for limiting the extent to which the rod is raised by the tube irrespective of the extent to which the tube is raised by the lever, a second spring acting against the rod in opposition to the first spring to lower the rod when the tube is lowered, and an agitator inthereservoir connected with the tube for stirring up the material the reservoir each time the tube is raised.
3. A mechanism for attachment to a press or other machine for intermittently dispensing unit I quantities of a fluid or semi-fluid material in conirrespective of the amplitude of movement of the junction witht-he operation of the machine, comprising a reseruo'ir which is provided with an outlet, avalve seat in the outlet, a reciprocable rod provided in the reservoir with a valve which in its advanced position normally engages the seat to close the outlet, a reciprocable member in the reservoir alongside the rod in guiding relation thereto, a lever operatively connected with the member, which lever is adapted to .be oscillated by a movable part of the associated machine to intermittently reciprocate the member, aspr-ing acting between the member and the rod to retract the rod each time the member is reciprocated, an adjustable stop in the path of movement of the rod for limiting the extent to which the rod is retracted by the member irrespective of the extent to which the member is retracted by the lever, and .a second spring acting against the rod in opposition to the first spring to advance the rod when the member is advanced.
4. A mechanism for intermittently dispensing unit quantities of ,a fluid or semi-fluid material, comprising a reservoir for'said material which is provided with an outlet, a valve seat in the outlet, a reciprocable rod in the reservoir with a valve which in its advanced position normally engages the seat to close theoutlet, a reciprocable member in the reservoir alongside the rod in guiding relation thereto, means to reciprocate the member, a spring acting between the member and the rod to retract the rod each time the member is reciprocated, an adjustable stop in the path of movement of the rod for limiting the extent to which the rod is retracted by the member irrespective of the extent to which the member is retracted by the lever, and a second spring acting against the rod in opposition to the first spring to advance the rod when the member is advanced.
