UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUBERT HEBERT, OF LAKE LINDEN, MICHIGAN.
SPRING-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,313, dated May 31, 1881.
' Application filed April 7, 12st. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBERT HEBERT, of Lake Linden, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Spring-Bed, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consistsin a spring-bed formed of a series of slats resting on crossed inclined spring-slats, the outer lower ends of which are fastened to the longitudinal side bars of a base-frame, whereas the middle of these springslats is supported by two adjustable longitudinal rails passing through the middle of the base-frame, by means of which middle rails the elasticity of the spring-slats can be adjusted.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan vicwof my improved spring-bed, showing some of the upper slats and some of the spring-slats removed. Fig. 2 is a cro'sssectional elevation of the same on the line 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line y y, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The slats A are provided with short longitudinal slots B at the ends, and through these slots screws or rivets 0 pass into the ends of crossed spring-slats D, the lower ends of which are fastened to the longitudinal rails E of a base-frame, F, these spring-slats D passing from one end of the slats A to the opposite longitudinal rail E of the base-frame. spring-slats D rest, near the center,on the longitudinal rails G, having their upper surfaces beveled toward the ends of the base-frame and passing through the middle of this base-frame. These central longitudinal rails G are secured 011 the transverse end rails 1-1 of the baseframe by strips J and screws L, and are provided on their upper surfaces with blocks K for separating the spring-slats D from each other and keeping them in place. The middle longitudinal rails, G, are adjustable, and it they are separated the elasticity of the springslats is decreased, whereas it they are brought together theelasticityoftheseslatsisincreased, their inclination. varying accordingly.
The slats A and the spring-slats D are preferably made of wood, but may he made of metal.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaini as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a spring-bed, the combination, with the slats A, of the spring-slats D, the base-frame F, the adjustable rails G G, and the strips J, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
HUBERT HEBERT.
