Description

U TTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY HOOTON AND J OS. G. BICKNELL, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WHEEL-JACK FOR CARRIAGES, &G.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,213, dated May 31, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY HooToN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, and JOSEPH G. BICKNELL, of Oambridgeport, in the county of Middlevsex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new Vheel-Jack for Raising, Lowering, and Moving vWeights or Heavy Bodies; and we do declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in so arranging a notched shaft with ratchets and pawls that heavy bodies may be easily, quickly and steadily raised and lowered.
To enable others to make and use our invention we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The machine is constructed of cast iron. It consists of a hollow box A, a notched shaft B, a lever D, a front jointed pawl C, a back pawl O, a jointed connecting rod K, a button H, a catch G, a spring F, a button E.
The operation of machine is as follows: The head of the notched shaft B having been placed in contact with the weight to be raised the spring F is fastened down by the button E, the lever D is elevated, the action of a spring upon the lower joint of the front pawl C decreases its length and the pawl falls into the notch next below where it previously stood. Upon depressing the lever D the length of the pawl C is restored and the shaft B consequently raised. Upon again raising the lever D the same action is renewed, the shaft B being retained in its place by the back pawl O. For the purpose of lowering weights the action of the machine is reversed. In order to do this the button E is turned olf of the spring F; the button H is 'turned into the catch fitted to receive it. The action of the machine is then reversed, the shaft B descending with each elevation of the lever D.
What we claim as o ur invention is l. The combination of the hollow box A with the lever Dthe front jointed pawl O the back pawl O and the notched shaft B, operating substantially as described.
2. The combination of the but-ton E-the spring F-the catch G-the button H--and the jointed connecting rod K, operating substantially as described.
HENRY HOOTON. JOSEPH Gr. BICKNELL.
