Description

May 13, ,19 7- c. c. BOWMAN ET AL DEHORNING PASTE APPLIER HAVING A SERRATED EDGE Filed Aug. 12, 1946 M m iziim w? .k AJ'TOR/VE Y.
Patented May 13, 1947 OFFICE DEHORNING PASTE APPLIER HAVING A SERRATED EDGE Charles C. Bowman, Helena, and Howard F. Bowman, Augusta, Mont.
Application August 12, 1946, Serial No. 689,933
This invention relates to applicators, and particularly to a device for applying a medicament in the nature of a paste to the horns of young cattle in which the horn has an incipient growth,
1 Claim. (Cl. 128-303) it being the purpose of the inventors to apply a 5 paste which has the quality or characteristic of arresting said growth so that hornless cattle can be developed.
It is an object of this invention to provide an applicator which will massage or work the medicament into the base of the horn and thoroughly distribute it without leaving excess coating on the external surface of the growth, a condition which might result injuriously to other animals if the treated animal rubbed the treated surfaces against the skins of other animals, as in that case damaging results would occur.
It is a further object of this invention to provide an applicator of the character indicated which is comparatively inexpensive to produce and maintain and which has proven efficient and satisfactory in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 illustrates a view in side elevation of the applicator;
Figure 2 illustrates a horizontal sectional view of the operating end thereof, on the line 2--2 of Fig. 2;
Figure 3 illustrates a view in elevation of the front end of the device; and
Figure 4 illustrates a sectional view on the line 9-4 of Fig. 2.
In these drawings l denotes an appropriate handle, preferably of wood, to which a head 5 of metal or plastic material is attached through the employment of a shank ,6 projecting inwardly from the head and it is seen that the head has an annular flange I spaced from the shank so that the inner part of the handle receives the said shank, and other parts of the handle project into the space between the flange and the shank so that a tight and effective joint results between the handle and the head.
The operating end of the head is provided with a recess or cup 8 into which the medicament is lodged prior to the operation of the device, and the periphery or end of the head is serrated to form teeth 9 which are preferably blunt on their ends in order that when the device is rotated, the teeth will have a scraping action On the formation at the base of the horn, thus thoroughly exposing the surface to the action of the paste. The cup may be shallow or deep according to the quantity of material which is to be used, but of course the area or capacity of the cup is not changeable but remains uniform as it is formed in the head.
In producing the head with a recess an annular flange is formed at the outer edge of the head, and the serrations are formed in the edge of this flange, as is fully shown in the drawings.
A device made in accordance with the invention can be readily manipulated, as is obvious, and its advantages have been demonstrated in use.
We claim:
An applicator for dehorning paste comprising a handle, a. head carried thereby, said head being provided with an inwardly extending shank lodged in the handle, the said head having an annular flange spaced from the shank for the reception of parts of the handle by which the joint between the head and handle is produced, the outer end of the head having a recess for containing paste and the edge of the said head having dull teeth formed in its periphery.
