Application September 25, 1944, Serial No. 555,711
6 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in wall tables and refers particularly to a wall table having a specially supported hinge leaf.
The principal object of the present invention is the provision of a wall table having a iiXed top and a leaf hinged thereto and supported thereby by means of depending brace members.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a wall table having a table top and a hinged table leaf having bracing means, all located adjacent the central portion of the table whereby they do not interfere with the leg room of the person seated'at the front and two ends of the table.
Other objects are rigidity and economy of construction, simplicity and ease of operation and adaptability for attachment to any vertical structure.
With these objects in view as well as other objects which will appear during the' course of the specification, reference will now be had to the drawing wherein;
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a wall table mounted on a wall embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the wall table showing the leaf dropped in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the table top and leaf with the leaf supporting means in position.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view of the leaf latching means.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line V-V of Fig. 4.
Throughout the several views like reference characters refer to similar parts and the numeral l0 designates a wall structure having a baseboard I2 which contacts the floor It.
The table proper comprises a table top IS provided at its rear edge with a securely attached rail member i3 which extends above' and below the table top and is secured to the wall by means of suitable fasteners such as screws 26. The outer edge of the table top is supported by means of a pair of downwardly and rearwardly converging brace arms 22 which are secured at their upper extremities by screws 25 in spaced apart relation adjacent the forward edge of the table top. The lower converging ends are secured by rivets 25 to the securing bracket 2S which in turn is secured to the baseboard l2 by means of screws 30. The screws 26 and braces 22 positioned and secured as just described support the table top in a very rigid relation to the wall structure.
A table leaf 32 of suitable width and length is secured to the forward edge of table top I6 by means of hinges 313. The leaf is adapted to be positioned with its upper surface in parallel planar relation with the upper surface of the table top or may be dropped to a vertical position substantially at degrees to the table top as shown in Fig. 2.
The support for the leaf 32 consists of .truss and brace members supported entirely by the table top and leaf so that when mounting the table on the wall the only screws necessary to set are those in the rail I8 and the baseboard screws Si). A tripod 34 comprising a V-shaped tube 36 flattened at its center portion 3,8 eX- tends longitudinally below the front edge portion of the table top and is flattened and perforated at its outer ends to receive screws 40 by means of which they are secured to the underside of the table top. A brace tube 42 flattened at its one end at 44 and secured to the lower side of cross tube 36 at 38 by means of bolts d6, extends forwardly of flattened portion 38 to form a step or ledge 48. The other end of brace 42 is flattened and secured to the underside of table top I6 by means of screw 50.
A strap metal bracket 5 2 is provided with a. base 515 which is perforated to receive the bolts d6 for securing it rigidly to the tripod 34. This bracket is formed to present a recess 56 for the reception of a brace member 58 carried by the leaf 32 and has two spaced apart sections 6B and 52 disposed horizontally and perforated at 6A and 66 respectively to receive a latch member 68 which has a cross pin 'l0 disposed between sections 6G and 52 to limit the vertical travel of latch member 68.
' Brace member 58, as shown, is made of tubing of a general V-shape having a flattened central section 12, the upper portion of which is bent forwardly to form a stop 'i4 for engagement with latch member 68 when this flattened portion 12 is resting on ledge 48 and below member Gil to rest against the back section 16 of bracket 52.
- The side walls 'I8 formed at the joint of bend in brace member 53 serves to contact the edges of member 66 to prevent relative side movement of the engaging parts. The outer ends 86 of brace 58 are formed and perforated to receive the pivot pins 82 carried by brackets 813 which in turn are fixed to the under side of leaf 32 by means of screws 86. A chain 88 secured at its one end to the underside of leaf 32 and at its other end to one leg of brace 58 serves to limit the movement of the brace away from the leaf.
When the leaf is in the dropped position the chain supports the brace 5B in the raised position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. When the parts are in the position just described and the leaf is raised, the brace section will snap into position in recess 56 and the latch will drop in front of stop 14, thus securing the tripod 34 and brace member 58 in fixed relation. The leaf may be lowered by raising the latch 68 and lifting up slightly on the outer edge of the leaf 32 to move 12 from ledge 48, thus permitting the brace to rest against chain 88. The chain 88 is of proper length to permit the proper relative positioning of the leaf and brace.
It will be observed that the brace arms 22 are downwardly and inwardly inclined so as to give plenty of clearance for persons seated at the side and two ends of the table and furthermore, the depending leaf supporting members are not suiliciently low to interfere with the knee room. This table is easily positioned on the wall, has no floor bearing and the leaf 32 may be dropped to present a narrow table top IB for use.
What I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent is:
