L. B. HARRIS ET AL GARMENT HANGER Filed Oct. 29, 1945 LEONARD B. HARRIS V ITO R. PASCA LE INVENTORS 5% M ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 29, 1947 GARMENT HANGER Leonard B. Harris, Southold, and Vito R. Pascale, New York, N. Y.
Application October 29, 1945, Serial No. 625,320
2 Claims.
This invention relates to an adapter or attachment for use in conjunction with clothes hangers and particularly clothes hangers for coats and overcoats.
lhe average coat hanger for adults does not suit the diiierent proportions of individual coats, therefore the average coat hangers in many cases distort the shape of the garment,'especially when the garment is wet.
An object of this invention is to provide an inexpensive and useful attachment that the individual can attach to a garment hanger so that the hanger will represent approximately the individual width of the shoulders of the user either sloping or square.
Another object of this invention is to provide a correctly shaped shoulder adapter for garment hangers for supporting garments such as coats and suits so that they will not lose their shape and to make the shoulder adapter slidable on the garment hanger so as to adapt its overall dimensions to various types and sizes of garments.
Another object of this invention is to provide a shoulder adapter for garment hangers adapted for attachment to a conventional type garment hanger and which can be easily stored and transported.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described, and the combination and arrangement of parts will be shown in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims which form part of this specification.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of the hanger, showing two adapters mounted at the ends thereof.
Figure 2 is a bottom view of the hanger and adapters shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a bottom view of an adapter on an enlarged scale and showing two flanges in partly closed position.
Figure 4 is a view similar to that shown in Figure 3, and showing the flanges in the spaced apart postion when mounted on a hanger.
Figure 5 is a front elevation of an adapter.
Figure 6 is a cross-sectional view, the section being taken as on line 6-45 in Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a front elevation of the adapter shown in Figure 5, with the flanges in closed position.
V hanger comprising a hook H and two diagonally In the illustrated embodiment of the invention,
the numeral l 0 indicates a conventional garment positioned side members I2, l2 extending from the hook.
The shoulder adapter l3 comprises generally similar hollow forms, preferably formed of thin sheet'metal, having a degree of resiliency.
Each shoulder adapter !3 has a convex upper surface, made to conform to the shoulder portion of a garment. The lower portion of the shoulder adapter l3 has free ends I 4, l4 terminating in flanges I 5, which extend in parallel and spaced-apart relation.
As shown in Figure 3, the flanges I5 are in closely spaced relation, while in Figure 4 the flanges are spaced further apart. Figures 3 and 4 show the shoulder adapters I3 considerably enlarged over that shown in Figures 1, 2 and 5 inclusive.
Due to the resiliency of the metal of which the shoulder adapters l3 are formed, the flanges [5 are adapted to move to and from each other with a resilient pressure so as to grip the sides of the conventional clothes hangers. The shoulder adapters I3 are frictionally slidable lengthwise of the diagonal side members 12 of the hanger l0 and securely hold their positions at any points where the user sets them on the hanger.
Shoulder adapters of the type herein disclosed preserve the shape of garments even when left hanging on a. hanger for an appreciable length of time. These shoulder adapters are usable with any type of hanger and provide the adjustment necessary to fit garments of different sizes.
The shoulder adapters may be shaped to conform to the contour of any particular garment and will maintain its form. It will be seen that shoulder adapters as above described afford a degree of protection and care to garments of value not found with simple hangers of the ordinary type; that is, when not equipped with the slidable shoulder adapters herein disclosed.
A shown in Figure 1, it will be seen that there is a considerable distance between the upper wall of the adaptor l3 and the upper wall of the side member l2 of the hanger l0. It is obvious that the free end portion of the adaptor I3 may be moved or adjusted vertically downwardly to bring the said walls closer together and thereby change the slope of the adaptors. This slope can be made at any point along the arms.
In accordance with the patent statutes we have described and illustrated the preferred embodiment of our invention, but it will be understood that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
We claim:
1. In a portable shoulder support adapter for mounting on a clothes hanger having vertically parallel opposite side walls, comprising a hollow body made of thin sheet material having a degree of resiliency; said adapter having free end portions extending inwardly of said body into adjacent relation and terminating in elongated parallel flanges, said flanges being adapted to grip said parallel vertical side walls and form a shoulder support upon said hanger, the body of said adapter being wider than the width of said gripping flanges to permit considerable movement of said flanges to and from each other, said adapter being in engagement solely with said vertical side walls of said hanger all along the length of said flanges and being thereby frictionally held at various adjusted positions lengthwise of said hanger, said adapter being movable vertically onsaid hanger into various positions to conform to sloping or square shoulder portions of a garment supported by said hanger.
2. In a portable shoulder support adapter for mounting on an end portion of a clothes hanger having vertically parallel side walls, comprising a hollow body made of thin sheet metal having a degree of resiliency, said adapter having portions extending inwardly into adjacent relation and terminating in elongated parallel flanges, said flanges being adapted to grip the vertical side walls of said hanger and form a shoulder support upon an end portion of said hanger, the body of said adapter being wider than said gripping flanges to permit movement of said flanges to and from each other, said adapter being in engagement with the side walls of said hanger all alon the length of said flanges and being thereby frictionally slidable and supportable in various positions lengthwise of said hanger, said adapter being movable vertically on said hanger into various angular positions to conform to the sloping shape of the shoulder portions of a garment supported by'said hanger.
