Application July 18, 1945, Serial N0. 605,812
4 Claims. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in earrings and more particularly to clamps for attachment of an ornament to the lobe of the car.
It is among the objects of the invention to provide means attachable to earring clamps for alleviating pinching or abrasion of the ear lobe.
The invention will become more apparent from a consideration of the accompanying drawing Fig. 7 a rear elevational view of still another modification of earring clamp attaching means.
With reference to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawing, the numeral l designates an ornament such as a pearl mounted in a l J-shaped bracket 2 having a screw thread element 3 for receiving a clamping screw 4 having a finger and thumb wheel 5 and a clamping plate 6, all of which are of conventional construction and design. In accordance with the present invention a clamping attachment, generally designated by the numeral 1 and, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, consisting of an enveloping portion 8 having an elongated shank T with a notched end 9. is attached to the clamping plate 6 by slipping the same over the screw l to fit into a circular recess ll! of substantially the size of the screw, a slotted portion being provided to allow the shoulder portion 8, which is flexible, to be displaced around the body of the screw 4.
The clamp attachment may be constructed of relatively thin sheet metal, plastic material or even stiffened cardboard or cloth, and, as shown in Fig. 1, may be provided with a corrugated or roughened surface I I so long as the shank l is of sufficient rigidity to hold the attachment against turning when the thumb wheel 5 is rotated to clamp the ear lobe between the back i2 of the ornament and the face H of the attachment.
The function of the above-described clamp attachment is to provide an enlarged clamping area with pressure of the clamp screw 4 distributed over the entire face H of the clamping attachment and partially over the shank l to thereby prevent pain otherwise caused by the pinching of the relatively small plate 6 of the clamping screw. Also, if the clamp attachment is made of an inexpensive substance it may be frequently renewed for sanitary purposes because of the simplicity of attaching the same to the clamping screw and U-shaped bracket.
The clamping attachment is mounted as described by first slipping the enveloping portion 8 over the screw shank 4 into place as shown in Fi 1 and the notch 9 of the shank element 1 is then snapped onto the U-shaped ear bracket 2 to prevent rotation of the attachment when the clamping screw 4 is revolved.
In Figs. 5 and 6 the same general idea is carried out by means of a clamping attachment having a circular enveloping portion 8a with the notch Ho and perforation lilo, the shank in being somewhat differently shaped than the shank of the attachment shown in Figs. 1 to 4. The notch 9a is similar to that of Fig. 3 and the application and function of the clamping attachment is the same as described in connection with Figs. 1 to 4.
In Fig. 7 still another form consisting of a folded end It having a notch I 4 constitutedby overlapping ends Ma and Mb and a screw receiving portion 15 serves the same purpose, with the shank if: having slot I7 and perforation I 8 to envelop the U-shaped bracket. The slot I! may also consist of overlapping ends such as shown at Ma and ill).
Obviously the notch l 8 may be square or otherwise shaped complementary to the cross-section of the shank of the U-shaped earring bracket 2 and, as previously stated, any suitable material of suflicient rigidity to prevent twisting or turning of the clamping attachment when applied as shown in Fig. 7 and of suflicient resilience to permit snapping of the enveloping bracket 2 is suitable for the purpose. Also the overlapping ends 14a and lib and ends Ila and "b may be cemerited or glued or otherwise secured after assembly to the earring clamp and shank.
Although several embodiments of the invention have been herein illustrated and described, it will be evident to those skilled in the art that various modifications may be made in, the details of construction without departing from the principles herein set forth.
I claim:
1. In an earring, a clamping attachment emhodying a closure for enveloping the clamping plate and body of the clamping screw, said attachment having a shank extending downwardly adapted for attachment with the earring bracket.
2. In an earring a clamping attachment embodying an enveloping portion to fit over the clamping screw and clamping plate having a shank constituting an extension of said attachment, and an enlarged surface area for engaging the ear lobe, said shank having yielding attaching means for snapping the same onto the earring bracket.
3. In an earring, a clamping attachment comprising an envelope notched to extend over the body of the clamping screw and to envelope the clamping plate to supply an enlarged surface area for clamping the earring to the lobe of the ear, said envelop having an extending shank portion integral therewith and having a slotted end portion for snap engagement with the earring bracket.
