Description

March 4, 1947. j B. M; KJORSVIK 2,416,929
POCKET KNIFE iled Nov. 8, 1944 Inventor aekmam/f amm QM y? Patented Mar. 4, 1947 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a pocket knife, and more particularly to such a knife of the foldable variety.
A primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved pocket knif having provided in association therewith a sharpening device.
An additional object of the invention is the provision of such a pocket knife adapted by means of the aforesaid sharpening device to be constantly maintained in sharp and effective condition.
Still another object of the invention resides in the provision of such a device which will be sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture and assemble,
Other objects reside in the combinations of elements, arrangements of parts, and features of construction, all as will be more fully pointed out hereinafter, and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, wherein there is shown a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevational View of one form of knife embodying features of this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 2-2 of Figure 1, as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows, and
Figure 3 is a sectitonal view taken substantially along the line 33 of Figure 2 as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Having reference now to the drawings, the knife of the instant invention is generally comprised of a casing indicated at It, including side plates I I, an end plug I2 secured to the side plates II as by rivets I3 or the like, a top plate It, anda blade I5 pivotally secured as by a pivot 55 between the side plates I I.
Each of the side plates I I has positioned therein a slot I'I having a countersunk recess I8 to receive the enlarged head 2| of pin during travel of the latter in the slot I7. Positioned between the slots I I is a pin or axle 20 provided at its extremities, exteriorly of the slot I! with cuts or finger-grips 2|. Interiorly of the side plates II the axle 20 is provided, as best shown in Figure 2, with oppositely disposed spacing collars 22 between which are positioned oppositely disposed convex disks 23 comprising the sharpening ele ments adapted to be juxtaposed to the edge 24 of the blade, on opposite sides thereof.
The slot I1 is inclined in order that increasing 55 pressure may be applied to th forward end of the blade for sharpening the latter by the recipro-.
cation of the disks 23, and also to provide a means for partially opening the blade in order to facili- V tate its complete opening for use.
From the foregoing the operation of the device should now be readily understandable. After each use of a knife the blade is folded and the finger-gripping portions 2| are grasped and moved longitudinally in the slots I'I back and forth several times. This movement occasions either sliding or rotative movement of the abrasive or sharpening disks 23 against the blade edge 24, serving to impart an edge to the same. Thus it will be seen that after each use a few strokes of the sharpener serve effectively to sharpen the.
ter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
In a device of the character described, a casing including side walls having longitudinally extending, angularly disposed, aligned transverse slots therein, a blade hingedly mounted and foldable between said side walls, said slots inclining from the hinge toward the point of said blade, and a sharpening element movable in said casing along said blade, said element including rotatable convex disks, oppositely disposed, mounted on an axle extending through said slots, finer-grips extending exteriorly of said slots, and spacer collars within said casing on opposite sides of said element to center the same on said blade.
BERTI-IA M. KJORSVIK.
