My invention relates to wringers employable. for
wringing clothes, and is of that class of wringers H having wringer rolls between which the goods are passed and pressed for expressing the liquid therefrom.
It is the object of my invention to provide novel means for resisting pressure between the wringer rolls, further. to provide novel means.
for a pressure between i the wringer rolls that may be quickly and effectively relieved for avoiding accidents; further, to provide novel means for operating the relieving mechanism; and, further, to provide novel means for maintaining the parts of the relieving mechanism in relieved relation.
The invention consists in novel means for attaining these objects; further, in providing a novel linkage mechanism for drawing the resistance means resisting pressure between the wringer rolls into operative relation; further, to
improved dedevice, viewed from one end of the same. and
partly broken-away.

I have exemplified my improved device as applied to a wringer of the character of that shown. described and claimed in my LettersPatent of the United States No. 1.932288, for Wringer, dated October 24, 1933, and thegeneral structure and purpose of the relieving bar of general inverted U-form such-as herein shown and described is disclosed in my Letters Patent of the United States on improvements in cross-bar bent therefrom. form. The respective sides of the frameare provided with downwardly sloping shelves I5,. having upwardly extending end flanges l6 curvingly of the upright posts, the clothes guards and such inner faces and the inner walls of the upright posts being provided with upright slots l9.
A longitudinal bar 3| resists pressure between the wringer rolls. It is shown as a top bar extending between the upper ends of the posts, and is shown provided withpan upper wall 32, depending side walls 33 and depending end walls 34, 35, forming a downwardly opening hollow 36 in the top bar. The. upper ends ofthe posts are received in the ends of this hollow in the top bar, the top bar being received canopywise over the upper ends of the posts.
This bar is movably secured to the. frame, permitting pressure to be exerted upon the wringer rolls, and quick release means are provided per.-
mitting relief of such pressure when the top the top bar and the wringer rolls, the respective ends of the bow spring extending through the slots I9 in the inner walls of the upright. posts and resting upon the upper bearings 26 of the wringer rolls. It has a seat 40 in its middle portion, receiving the lower rounded end of a screw 4| having threaded connection 42 with a nut 43 secured to and extending through the top bar, the screw having a knob 44 at its upper end for rotating the same.
There is a releasable connection 48 between one end of the top bar and one of the posts, arranged to be released and connected by opposite endwise movements of the top bar. It is exemplified as comprising a knob 49 received in a hole 50, the knob beingshown on the post and the hole in the end wall of the top bar. The
hole is preferably elongated as a slot for readily receiving the knob.
A linkage mechanism Si is provided for conmeeting the other end of the longitudinal bar and the frame, and is exemplified as a link 52 having pivot connection 53 with the end of the top bar and a link 54 having pivot connection 55 with a post adjacent to its upper end. These links extend from these pivot connections, and are interpivoted at their outer ends by a pivot 56. The link 52 is extended beyond the pivot 56 to form a lever. The outer end of the lever forms a handle 51.
This lever is preferably formed out of sheet metal, with an inwardly extending marginal flange 6|, the pivots 53, 56 having bearings at their opposite ends in opposite portions of this flange.
The pivot 53 has bearing 62 in a bracket 63 fixed to the end wall 34 of the top bar, the bearing extending outwardly from this end wall. The pivot 55 has bearings in lugs 64 struck outwardly from theupper end of the post. The marginal flange of the lever forms a pocket in the inner face of the lever. The inner portions of the pivots 53, 56 and the bearings therefor, as well as the link 54 and the pivot 55 and its bearings, are received in the pocket of the lever when the lever is moved toward the frame in operative relation, to provide compactness of parts, to conceal the covered parts, and to provide a flush and pleasing appearance for the linkage connecting end of the wringer.
The pivot 56 forms a toggle between the links 52, 54, that is, between the operating lever and the link 54, so arranged that when the lever is moved toward operative position for placing the parts for pressure relation between the rolls, the pivot 56 is moved toward the plane, exemplified by the dot and dash line 65, in Fig. '7, in which the axes of the pivots 53 and 55 are located, for drawing the top bar or frame, which may be considered as a frame part, toward the main frame for connecting said parts for pressure between the wringer rolls. This places the pivot. 56 proximate to said plane, but preferably at the outside thereof, so that there is preferably a tendency toward separation between said parts.
Movement of the pivot 58 toward the plane in which the pivots 53, 55 are located, moves the links 52, 54 from the acute angular relation exemplified in Fig. 8 into substantial parallelism, exemplified in Fig. '7, thereby drawing the connected parts toward each other into operative relation.
A latch 68 is provided for releasably holding the parts in such relation. The latch has a hook 69 received over a lug 'lll fixed to the lever. It is provided with pivot lugs II, forming bearings about a pivot pin I2, located in bearing holes I3 in the frame. The latch is provided with a cam part I l, shown extending inwardly therefrom to form a lever. A spring I is fixed to the frame and bears against the lever, as against the cam-formed tail thereof, for resiliently urging the latch into engaging relation. The lug I0 is provided with an inclined face I6, upon which the hook end of the latch rides into engagement with the lug when the lever is moved toward the frame.
The means exemplified for releasing the latch comprise a cross-bar 80, provided with oppositely extending cam faces 82, 83 coacting with the cam part of the latch. The oppositely presented cam faces on the cross-bar and the contact part therefor on the latch may, of course, be reversed if desired. There is a further cross-bar 8 i. The crossbars may each be a piece of sheet metal bent to have a top wall 84, depending side walls 85 and end walls 86, the opposing cam faces being shown formed in one of the side walls.
Means are provided so that the cross-bar may be operated from each side of the wringer by movement in either direction. and means are provided at each side of the wringer for effecting such movement. There is a releasing bar of general inverted U-form, such as exemplified in my aforesaid patents, Nos, 1,408,807 and 1810,479. at each side of the wringer. Each of these releasing bar 81 comprises a top or hand rail 88 and depending sides 89, 90. arranged about the top and end of the wringer oll opening in the front and rear of the frame. The hand rails are parallel to each other. Each of the posts has at each side thereof a bearing bracket 9| fixed to the wall of the post, as by spot-welding. and pref erably formed up out of sheet metal, and having a bearing 92 therein for the downwardly extending branch of the releasing bar. Each of these downwardly extending branches is proximate to this point provided with an inward bend 93 for projecting the upper ends of the releasing bars slantingly outward for placing them in positions to be readily grasped by the operatrix in case she desires to take quick action in separating the rolls. Any part of each of these releasing bars may be moved toward or from the Wringer frame for such release.
The lower ends of the depending sides of these releasing bars are reduced in cross-section, as shown at 94, to form stems received in bearings 95 in the cross-bar 80, 8| and shoulders 96 to rest upon the cross-bars. Each of these depending sides has an enlargement 91, shown as a screw threaded into the bar under its bearing 92 for holding the bar downwardly.
Each of the brackets 9| is provided with an inwardly extending portion 98, extending through a slot 99 in the respective front and rear walls of the posts, to form shelves on which the lower bearings of the wringer rolls rest.
The front and rear walls of the posts are also provided with holes I00 of cross-sectional form. similar to that of the cross-bars 80, 8|, to form bearings in which these cross-bars lide endwise.
In order to hold the cam mechanism between the cross-bar and the latch normally in neutral relation, I provide the cross-bar BI sliding endwise in its bearings. This cross-bar may be devoid of the oppositely presented cam face 82, 83. if desired.
Oppositely acting springs IOI, I02 are received about the cross-bar 8| inside the channel of the frame between the front and rear walls of the frame. A pin I03 is in the middle portion of the cross-bar 8I between the springs. This pin may be a, cotter-pin received through a hole I04 in the middle of the cross-bar, and positions the inner ends of the springs. When one of the releasing levers is moved in one direction, one of the springs is compressed, and when either of the releasing levers is moved in the opposite direction, the other of the springs is compressed, the springs returning the operating levers to normal positions and returning the cam-actuating means for the latch into normal relation upon release of the operating levers.
A keeper I05 shown formed in the top of the post I3 receives the end wall 34 of the top bar and holds the top bar from automatically returning about the post l3 nd prevents automatic reengagement of the releasable connection 48, for keeping the parts in release relation.
In case of accident the operatrix may quickly 80 actuating the latch 58 for movement of the lever 51 in releasin direction, whereby the toggle links 52, 54 are moved into release relation, the parts in the present exemplification being moved from their relation shown in Fig. 7 to their relation shown in Fig. 8 by the pressure between the wringer rolls.
During this movement of the parts, the end wall 34 of the top bar is raised above the top of the post l3 and the top bar is moved longitudinally for releasing the releasable connection 48. for removing all pressure between the wringer rolls and permitting raising of the upper roll and the top bar and the parts therebetween for com: plete release of everything which may be between the rolls.
Upon descent of the raised end of the top bar the end wall 34. engages the keeper I05 and prevents automaticreengagement of the releasable connection 48 for holding the parts in release relation. Explaining the operation more in detail, and referring particularly to Figs. 7 and 8. it may be stated that upon sudden release of the pressure upon the spring 39 and consequent release of pressure between the.wringer rolls due to release of the latch 68 in the present exemplification, asudden upward movement is im parted to that portion of the top bar with which the spring connects, being the middle portion of the top bar in the present exemplification.
The right-hand end of the top bar as viewed in Fig. 7 is momentarily held to the main frame by the releasable connection 48, causing the motion of the top bar to be translated into an arcuate motion about the releasable connection 48 as a center. for swingingthe left hand end of.
the pivot 53 carries the lever 51 with it and swings the lever upwardly upon the pivot 53. qualified by the outward swinging movement of the link 54 about its pivot 55 on the main frame, and the pivot connection 56 between the swinging end of this link 54 and the lever.
This reacts upon the upper end of the link portion 52 of the lever, which is that portion of the lever above the pivot 56, as hereinbefore explained, and which is longer than the link 54, moving this upper end of the link portion 52 of the lever inwardly toward the vertical plane in which the post I3 is located, and above this post. thereby raising the end wall 34 of the top bar above this post and tilting the top bar upon its releasable connection 48, and automatically moving the top bar endwise to the right with relation to the posts. as viewed in Fig. 8, thereby moving the end wall 35 of the top bar and the wall of. its hole 50 beyond the knob 49. whereby this end of the top bar is released. 1
This action or sequence of movements of the parts is extremely rapid, and it may be said al- -most instantaneous, the recoilof the spring 39 practically shooting the parts through the motions stated due to their connections. The upward and endwise movement of the top bar is limited by the links 52, 54 and their pivotal con nections. preventing dangerousjextent of move ment of the top bar and its connectedparts.
The releasable connection 48 holds the right hand end of the top barto the post l4during the initial portion of these movements, whereby forceful upward movement of the-right hand end of the top bar is preventedfremoving all danger from the movements of the parts, and during the balance of these movements the right hand end of the top bar rests upon the post I4.
The pivot 56 may during the release motion rise to the level of the pivot 55 or above said level, and if strong tension is applied to the spring 59, the pivot 56 will be "raised sufficiently by the recoil of the resilient pressure of the rolls and spring upon release of the latch 68, to almost fully open the links 52. 54 with relationto each other, movement of the pivot 56 into a right line between the pivots 53, 55 when-the links are in such almost fully open relation being prevented by having the free edge of the marginal flange 5| engage the upper edge of the outer end wall of the post l3. r
The motive power for the separating move ments is the energy stored'in the resilient pressure between the wringer rolls and in'the spring 39, released by release of ent exemplification.
When the relieving movements ofthe partsf have been completed, the raised parts dropby gravity, the top bar remaining in endwise moved relation, so thatthebottom of the end wall 34' automatically becomesseated in the seat "15. as shown in Fig. 8, the effect of which is to prevent re-engagement of the releasable connection 48.
These movements are entirely. automatic, and
quick upon release of the safety latch 55;?

In a wringer having a frame comprising end posts, a top bar, wringer rolls and pressure means therefor operatively disposed between said frame and said top bar, said pressure means positioned to exert pressure upon said wringer rolls, the combination of a releasable connection between one end of said top bar and one of said posts, and connecting means between the other end of said top bar and the other of said posts comprising interpivoted links pivoted respectively to said other end of said top bar and to said other of said posts and arranged to be moved into substantial parallelism for effecting wringing pressure between said rolls and out of parallelism, while maintaining all of said pivotal connections, for enabling relief of said pressure, and for movement of said top bar for release of said releasable connection.
3. In a wringer having a frame comprising end posts having wringer rolls journaled therein. a top bar. said frame and said top bar forming a pair of frame members, pressure means operatively disposed between one of said frame members and said wringer rolls for exerting pressur upon said wringer rolls, the combination of a releasable connection between one end of said top bar and one of said posts, connecting means between the other end of said top bar and the other of said posts comprising interpivoted links pivoted respectively to said other end of said top bar and to said other of said posts and arranged to be moved into substantial parallelism for effecting pressure between said rolls and out of parallelism for enabling relief of said pressure, such movement out of parallelism raising said other end offsaid top bar about aid releasable connection as a center and moving said top bar endwise for release of said releasable connection, and a keeper acting on said top bar resisting return endwise movement of said top bar for maintaining release of said releasable connection.
4. In a wringer, the combination of opposed wringer parts for receiving wringer rolls therebetween, mechanism including a toggle between said parts for producing wringing pressure between said rolls. said toggle comprising a longer link continuously pivoted to one of said parts and a horter link continuously pivoted to the other of said parts, a latch for said toggle, and releasing means for said latch.
5. In a wringer having a frame, wringer rolls journaled therein, a longitudinal bar and pressure means; the combination of connecting means between said frame and said longitudinal bar resisting pressure between aid wringer rolls, pres sure relieving means for said connecting means comprising a movable cross-bar having oppositely presented slanting cam surfaces cooperating with said connecting means, and operating levers having portions at the top and ends of the wringer rolls, said levers pivoted to said frame for movements toward and from said frame at the respective sides of said wringer and having connections with said cross-bar for moving said cross-bar by each of opposite movements of said operating levers.
6. In a wringer having a frame comprising opposed frame sections, wringer rolls between said frame sections, and pressure means; the combination of connecting means between said frame sections resisting pressure between said wringer rolls and including a latch, a release bar at each side of said frame, a movable cross-bar at each end of said frame having connection with said release bars for being moved thereby, one of said crossbars having oppositely presented cam surfaces cooperating with said latch, and oppositely acting spring means having operative connection with the other of said cross-bars for normally holding said cam surfaces in neutral relation.
7. In a wringer having a frame comprising end posts and a top bar, hearings in said posts including lower bearings. and wringer rolls journaled in said bearings, the combination of connecting means between said top bar and said end posts comprising a latch. and releasing means for said latch comprising a bar at each side of said frame, a bracket fixed at each side of each of said posts and having a shelf extending into the inside of the post, said shelves forming supports for said lower bearings, a movable cross-bar in each of said posts having connections with said respective bars for moving said cross-bars, one of said crossbars having oppositely presented cam surfaces cooperating with said latch for releasing said latch by opposite movements of said bars, and oppositely acting spring means operatively connected with the other of said cross-bars for normally holding said cam surfaces cooperating in neutral relation.
8. In a wringer having opposed wringer members, wringer rolls therebetween, and pressure means between said members and said wringer rolls to produce pressure between said wringer rolls; the combination of interpivoted links pivoted to said respective members, means wherewith to move the pivot between said links toward the plane in which the pivots between said links and said members are locacted, and safety release means acting to hold aid links in such moved relation and to release said links for movement of said pivot between said links in opposite direction, said link-s having maintained articulations by said pivots with each other and with said members for limiting separation between said members.
9. In a wringer having opposed wringer members, wringer rolls therebetween, and pressure means between said members and said wringer rolls to produce pressure between said wringer rolls, the combination of interpivoted links pivoted to said respective members, means wherewith to move the pivot between said links toward the plane in which the pivots between said links and said members are located, and a safety release acting to hold said links in such moved relation and including a lever having upper and end stretches about the normal positions of said wringer rolls and having operative connection with said links which when released permits movement of said pivot between said links away from said plane, said links having maintained articulations by said pivots with each other and with said members for limiting separation tween said members.
10. In a wringer having opposed wringer members, one of which is movable lengthwise with relation to the other, wringer rolls therebetween, and pressure means between said members and said wringer rolls to produce pressure between said wringer rolls, the combination of releasable connecting means between said members at one end of the same, interpivoted links pivoted to the other end of said members, means wherewith to move the pivot between said links toward the plane in which the pivots between said links and said members are located to produce pressure between said wringer rolls, and safety release means acting to hold said links in such moved" relation, said pressure means and said safety' means between said members at one of their ends, interpivoted links pivoted to the other end of said members, means wherewith tomove the pivot between said links toward the plane in which said links being longer than theother at one,

In a wringer having a frame having feeding openings for access to the wringer rolls at the opposite sides thereof, pressure applying means for said wringer rolls, the combination of transverse bars transverse to the frame and movable in opposite directions in said frame, release levers at the opposite sidesof said frame extending along the top and ends of said feeding openings and articulated with said transverse bars for operating the same, brackets extending from the opposite sides of the frame at both ends of said feeding openings, said levers pivoted to said brackets at the opposite sides of the frame, and double acting cam means having slanting cam faces and a coacting part therefor, said double acting cam means located between one of said transverse bars and said pressure applying means, all constructed to release the pressure between said wringer rolls by movement of either of said release levers toward or from said frame, and double acting spring means between and having operative connections with the other of said transverse bars and the frame for returning said bars and levers to normal positions.
19. In a wringer having a frame having feeding openings for access to the wringer rolls at the opposite sides thereof, pressure applying means for said wringer rolls, the combination of transverse bars transverse to the frame and movable in opposite directions in said frame at the ends of said feeding openings, brackets extending from the opposite sides of the frame at both ends of said feeding openings, release levers at the opposite sides of said frame extending along the top and ends of said feeding openings and articulated with said transverse bars for operating the same, said levers pivoted to said brackets at the opposite sides of the frame, and double acting cam means having slanting cam faces and a coacting part therefor, said double acting cam means located between one of said transverse bars and said pressure applying means, and all I constructed to release the pressure between said gwringer rolls'by movement of either of said release levers toward or from said frame, and Edouble-acting spring means between and having operative connection with the other of said transverse bars and said frame for returning said bars and levers to normal positions.
20. In a wringer having a frame having feeding openings for access to the wringer rolls at the opposite sides thereof pressure applying means for said wringer rolls, the combination of transverse bars transverse to the frame and movable in opposite directions in the ends of the frame, brackets at the ends of the frame at each side thereof above said transverse bars, release levers at both sides of said frame having upper portions extending along the top and downwardly extending end portions extending along the ends of said feeding openings and provided with inward bends toward said frame near the lower ends thereof, said downwardly extending portions pivoted in said brackets at said bends, the lower ends of said downwardly extending portions articulated with said transverse bars for operating the same, double acting cam means having slanting cam faces and a coacting part therefor, said double acting cam means located between 5 one of said transverse bars and said pressure applying means, and all constructed to release the pressure between said wringer rolls by movement of either of said release levers toward or from said frame, and spring means between and having operative connections with the other of said transverse bars and the frame for retuming said transverse bars and said levers to normal positions.
21. In a wringer having a frame, wringer rolls journaled therein, a longitudinal bar, and pressure means including connecting means between said frame and said longitudinal bar resisting pressure between said wringer rolls, the combination of pressure relieving means for said connecting means comprising a movable crossbar movable crosswise of said frame and a coacting part therefor respectively having thereon oppositely slanting cam surfaces and a coactin contact face, said pressure relieving means being 5 located between said frame and said connecting means, and an operating lever having portions at the top and ends of the wringer rolls, said lever pivoted to said frame for movements toward and from said frame and having connection with said cross-bar for moving said cross-bar to relieve said connecting means by each of opposite movements of said operating lever.
22. In a wringer having a frame comprising opposed frame ,sections, wringer rolls between said frame sections, and pressure means includingv connecting meansv between said frame sections' resisting pressure between said wringer rolls; the combination of a latch to hold said connecting means in connecting relation, a release bar at the side of-said frame, a movable cross-bar movable crosswise of said frame at each end of said frame, said cross-bars respectively having connections with said release bar for being moved thereby, one of said cross-bars and said latch having between them oppositely presented cam surfaces and a coacting contact face therefor, and oppositely acting spring means operatively located between said frame and the other of said cross-bars for normally holding said cam surfaces and said coacting contact face in neutral relation.
23. In a wringer having opposed wringer members, wringer rolls therebetween, and pressure means between said members and said wringer rolls to produce pressure between said wringer rolls, the combination of interpivoted links pivoted to said respective members in manner to be movable to and fro, means wherewith to move the pivot between said links toward the plane in which the pivots between said links and said members are located and to hold said links in such moved position, and a safety release lever pivoted to one of said members and having upper and end stretches about said wringer rolls,

In a wringer having a wringer roll supporting frame, wringer rolls mounted in said frame, one of said wringer rolls being slidably mounted, said frame comprising opposed frame members between which said wringer rolls are located, the combination of a toggle between said frame members for producing wringing pressure between said rolls, said toggle comprising a longer outer link provided with an inner pocket and pivoted to one of Said frame members and a, shorter inner link pivoted to said longer link and to the other of said frame members in position to be received in said pocket upon approach to parallelism between said linim for producing such pressure between said rolls, the edges of the pocket abutting and forming with the frame an enclosure for the shorter link.

In a wringer having a roll supporting means, rolls therein, said means comprising a lower frame, a releasable top frame, and pressure means for the rolls; the combination of a mechanism comprising a toggle, one link being mounted for pivotal movement on the top frame and the other link of the toggle being pivoted to the firs mentioned link and to the lower frame, said firstmentioned link having an arm extending past the pivots of the second-mentioned link and forming a lever for actuating the toggle to position the same to exert pressure on the pressure means.
34. In a roll wringer releasing device for a wringer having a lower wringer frame, a releasable top frame therefor, wringer rolls disposed in the lower frame, tensioning means for the rolls supported in the upper frame, the same being capable of moving the upper frame relative to the lower frame to relax pressure between the rolls, the combination of a toggle link mechanism connecting the upper and lower frames the same being operable by the upper frame when the latter is moved by said tensioning means, latch mechanism cooperative with said link mechanism adapted to prevent operation of the latter by the described movement of the upper frame whereby said movement is prevented and pressure between the rolls is maintained and manual means for moving said latch to permit operation of the toggle link mechanism to allow movement of the upper frame whereby pressure between the rolls is relaxed.
35. In a wringer having a frame having upright portions, wringer rolls supported by'the upright portions of said frame, a separable cross head member supported by said upright portions, ad'- justable spring means carried by said cross head member for normally holding said wringer rolls in pressure contact, the combination of toggle link mechanism having inseparable members for retaining said cross head member in normal working position and joining the cross head to at least one of the upright portions, a movable latch member for holding the toggle mechanism in operable relation when retained in holding position and so that the pressure load is divided between the toggle mechanism and latch, said spring means being operable to move the toggle mechanism when the latch is not retained in holding position whereby the pressure between the rolls is released.
36. In a wringer having a frame, rolls mounted in the frame, a removable top bar on the frame,
pressure means between the top bar and the rolls, and means for detachably securing one end of the bar to the frame, the combination of securing means between the other end of the bar and the frame comprising a toggle with one link'pivoted to the frame the other link pivoted to the bar and to said n t link, the construction being such that the pivots of said links may be brought close to but short of a straight line position, whereby pressure between the bar and the frame will bias said toggle into a released position, and latching means to secure said toggle in a pressure retaining position.

In a wringer, the combination with a base, bridge-bar and connecting anchorage for one end of said bar to said base, of an anchorage for the other end of said bridge-bar, comprising a toggle connected at its opposite ends to said base and bridge-bar, said toggle having a link, a latch arranged to releasably engage said link of the toggle, and hand-manipulable means mounted on the base by which the latch may be retracted out of engagement with said link.
38. In a wringer, the combination with the base, bridge-bar and connecting anchorage for one end of said bar, of an anchorage for the other end of .said bridge-bar, comprising a toggle connected at its opposite ends to said base and bridge-bar, said toggle having a link, a latch arranged to releasably engage said link of the toggle, a camming element mounted within the base and engageable with the latch by movement in either of two directions by which the latch may be retracted out of engagement with said link, and hand-manipulable means accessibly associated with said camming element.
39. In a wringer, the combination with the base, bridge-bar and connecting anchorage for one end of said bar, of an anchorage for the other end of said bridge-bar, comprising a toggle connected at its opposite ends to said base and bridgebar, said toggle having a link, a latch arranged to releasably engage said link of the toggle, a camming element mounted on the base to move in a plane transversely of the latch and engaging the latch by moving in either direction to retract the latch out of engagement with said link, and hand-manipulable means accessibly associated with said camming element.
40. In a wringer, the combination with the base, bridge-bar and connecting anchorage for one end of said bar, of an anchorage for the other end of said bridge-bar, comprising a toggle connected at its opposite ends to said base and bridge bar, said toggle having a link, a latch arranged to releasably engage said link of the toggle, a camming element reciprocably mounted in the base transversely of thelatch and engageable with the latch by movement in either of two directions by which the latch may be retracted out of engagementwith said link, and hand-manipulable means accessibly associated with said camming element.
41. In a wringer, the combination with a base, bridge-bar and connecting anchorage for one end of said bar to said base, of an anchorage for the other end of said bridge-bar, comprising a toggle connected at its opposite ends to said base and bridge-bar and having one of its links having an extension beyond its connection with the companion link to form a hand-manipulable member, a latch on said base arranged to releasably engage the said extended portion of said link, and a hand-manipulable means mounted on the base by which the latch may be operated.
42. A roll wringer mechanism for a wringer having a frame comprising lower and top frames, wringer rolls in the frame, and pressure means for the rolls, a mechanism capable of operating said pressure means comprising a lever link on one end of the top frame and mounted for pivotal movement thereon, said lever link having portions included in a non-locking toggle mechanism adapted by movement of said lever link to bring about operation of said pressure means to press the rolls together, and a lock and release mechanism coacting with said toggle whereby the top frame is held in or released from pressure position.
43. A roll wringer mechanism for a wringer having a frame comprising lower and top frames, wringer rolls in the frame,- and pressure means for the rolls, a mechanism operating the pressure means to render the same capable of pressing the rolls together comprising a lever link on one end of the top and mounted for pivotal movement thereon, the same having portionsincluded in a non-locking toggle mechanism adapted by movement of said link to operate said pressure means,
means for holding the link in pressure applying position, and means associated with the link for disabling said holding means.
44. A roll wringer mechanism for a wringer having a frame comprising lower and top frames,
wringer rolls in the frame, and pressure means for the rolls, a mechanism operating the pressure means to render the same capable of pressing the rolls together comprising a lever link mounted for pivotal movement at one end of the top frame, the same having portions included in a toggle mechanism adapted by movement of said lever link to operate said pressure means, means for holding the lever link in pressure applying position, and mechanism associated with the lever link and movable independently thereof to disable said holding means.
45. A device of the class described having a frame comprising a lower frame and a top frame movable toward or away from the lower frame,
wringer rolls in the frame, and pressure means 1 for the rolls made active by movement of the top frame toward the lower frame, the combination of mechanism capable of moving the top frame comprising a lever link extending from one end of the top frame and mounted for pivotal movement thereon, said lever link having portions included in an unstable toggle mechanism adapted by movement of said lever link to bring about movement of the top frame to render said pressure means active to press the rollstogether and means for releasably securing said toggle mechanism with said pressure means active.
46. In a wringer release mechanism for a wringer having spaced side frame members and between which the wringer rolls may extend, means for imposing wringing pressure upon the wringer rolls, and means for effecting a quick release of the pressure exerted by said pressure means, the combination of means for operating said pressure releasing means comprising, a bar extending longitudinally of the wringer between said side frame members, a pivot connection between one end of said bar and one of said side frame members, means providing a sliding connection between the other end of said bar and 18 the other of said side frame members, and means engageable by said connection means upon movement of said bar with respect to said pivot for operating said pressure releasing means.

In a wringer having spaced side frame members, upper and lower rolls journaled in said side frame members, a releasable top frame member associated with said side frame members and a spring carried and normally tensioned between said top frame member and the rolls, the combination of toggle means normally securing said top frame member in spring tensioning position, a bar carried by saidside frame members, means mounting said bar for shifting movement transversely of one of the frame members, and means engaged with said toggle means and associated with said bar for releasing said toggle when said bar is shifted.
48. In a wringer having a frame having upright portions, wringer rolls supported by the upright portions of said frame, a separable cross head frame portion supported by said upright portions, and spring means reacting between said frame and said rolls for normally holding said wringer rolls in pressure contact, the combination of toggle link mechanism having members for retaining said cross head in normal working position and joining the cross head to at least one of the upright portions, a movable latch member for holding the toggle mechanism in operable relation when retained in holding position and so that the pressure load is divided between the toggle mechanism and latch, said spring means being operable to move the toggle mechanism when the latch is not retained in holding position whereby the pressure between the rolls is released.
49. In a wringer mechanism, in combination, wringer rolls, roll pressure members acting on opposite sides of the roll axes for pressing the rolls together, pressure sustaining means connecting said members including toggled links connected to the respective members and a pressure sustaining hook movable. from its pressure sustaining position, and safety release means for moving the hook from its pressure sustaining position.
50. In a clothes wringer, separable roll pressure applying members, means for maintaining said members in pressure applying relation including unstable toggle links pivoted respectively to the pressure applying members and each other and forming in pressure maintaining position an acute angle at the common pivot, a latch for maintaining the toggle links in pressure maintaining position, and safety release means for moving the latch from the pressure maintaining position.
51. In a clothes wringer, separable roll pressure applying members, means for'maintaining said members in pressure applying relation including unstable toggle links pivoted respectively to the pressure applying members and each other and forming in pressure maintaining position an acute angle at the common pivot, a latch on one of said members for holding the toggle links in the pressure maintaining position, and means for moving the latch from its pressure maintaining position.
