FEED-WATER HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,220, datedv April 19, 1881.
Application filed February 26, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD H. ASH CROFT, of Lynn, in the county ot' Essex and State of Massachusetts, and SAMUEL TUCKER, of Boston, in the county ot' Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Feed-Water Heaters, Condensers, Snc.; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represen ts a sectional view ot a device embodying our invention, which relates to a construction of the separable parts that compose the shell or casing, whereby the connection of the tube-sheets and bonnets or heads with the body of the shell or casing will permit a variable expansion of the several parts without strain, and also facilitate a separation ot' the same for cleansing and repairs.
In order that others may understand this invention, we will tirst proceed to describe fthe shell or casing, b the bonnets or heads,
c an annular ring connecting thebody and head, and d a nest or series of longitudinal tubes arranged within the shell and txed at their opposite ends to transverse plates or sheets The arrangement of the tubes d and division of the interior of the apparatus to provide the chambered portions with the inlet and discharge'openings are the same as in other apparatus of such kind, and are no part of our invention. Therefore it is not deemed necessary to further refer to such interior arrangement that may be varied to suit the particular use to which our invention may be adapted, which relates solely to such separable parts of the structure exposed to variable temperatures, and which are so joined together as to permit the unobstructed action to the different rates of expansion and contraction to which the parts are subjected, due to such variations in temperatures.

To this end we construct the annular ring c in substantially the form in cross-section shown in the drawing, and connect the body or casing a and the bonnet or head b with a beveled joint, and secure the respective parts together by means ot' the tie-rods, which engage with projecting lugs upon the base of the annular ring and bonnets or heads, and are held in place by the threaded nuts, as shown, or which may be secured by a slot and key, or other equivalent means.
The tube-sheets e are provided with anges at the periphery, turned inwardly to providev a suitable bearing within the internal recess ot' the annular ring, said recess being of suicient length to permit an elongation of the tubes and consequent movement ot' the tubesheets, and in depth about iiush with the inner surface of the shell or casing a. Each ofthe respective joints may -beprovided with a circumferential groove to receive a suitable packing, as shown at h, it' necessary.
The advantages attending this construction in an apparatus of this kind are obvious, the numerousbolts generally used to secure the bonnets being dispensed with, and such expedients substituted that not only insure equal strength, but are more readily applied and adjusted in maintaining close joints, beside facilitating a separation of the parts.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A shell or casing for feed-water heaters, condensers, or similar apparatus, provided with a separable annular ring, recessed, as shown, interposed and joined to the shell or casing and bonnet or head by a beveled joint, and forming a support to the tube-sheet, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
