6 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in radio'apparatus and is directed more particularly to condensers and intermediate frequency assemblies.
This application is a division of application Ser. No. 537,129 filed by me May 24, 1944.
One object of the invention is the provision of a fixed condenser which is particularly adapted for use in connection with intermediate frequency transformers and the like.
Another object of the invention he provision of an intermediate frequency transformer which is characterized by novel components including the condenser.
Various other novel features and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter more full? referred to in connection with the following description of the invention in the form at present preferred.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a side elevational view of the components of an intermediate frequency transformer embodying the novel features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the condenser of the invention;
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the condenser shown in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a side elevational View of an intermediate frequency transformer embodying novel features of the invention.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
A condenser is'represented by 2 which includes a body A of plastic material molded to enclose a condenser from which extends terminals The material of the body may be Bakelite, rubber or some other suitable composition which is used for molding condensers and the like.
The condenser may include thin sheets of dielectric material such as mica which carry or have therebetween thiometal plates. The metal plates are alternately connected to the spaced terminals 5 and is accomplished by a metal clip 8 secure to each terminal which bent around the ends of the condenser elements.
condenser may consist of thin plates of mice which may carry a metal pla ing or coating with thin strips of metal foil extending from the plating to the clips 8 alternately so that one set of metal plating is connected to one terminal while the other set is connected to the other terminal. 7
The. terminals 6 may have reduced portions ill around which wires may be wound that are soldered to the said terminals.
An inner face ii of the condenser is provided with a projection l4 and a socket 16. A halfhole is is provided in the upper part of said face and a relatively larger half-hole 2'?) is provided in the lower part thereof.
In one way two such condensers are employed by placing their inner faces together so that the projection of each face is received in the socket of the other. In this relation the halfholes rovide an upper hole and a lower hole.
A bracket 22 has a horizontal part 2 3 and depending arms 26 provided with tapped holes 28.
A bushing 30 has an upper part 32 that extends through bracket part 25 and is spun over so as to be fast to the bracket 22. This part 32 of the bushing fits in the half-holes 18 of the condensers when they are in back to back relation. A lower part; 34 of the bushing is received in the half-holes 20 of the condensers when in back-to-back relation and is spaced inwardly from the sides of the half-holes. A collar por tion 3| of bushing abuts the upper side of halfholes 20.
The bushing 39 is internally screw threaded to threadedly receive a screw 36 and a lock washer 3% threadedly engages said screw 36.
The condenser 2 has a vertical groove 1 in its outer face so that when a pair of condensers are in back to back relation the parts 26 of the bracket are received in the grooves I.
A tube 42 having a. relatively thin wall and made from suitable material so as to act as a coil support carries one or more inductance coils M and 45 which may be the primary and secondary of an intermediate frequency transformer or the like. The upper end portion of tube t2 is receivable in half-holes 29 of condensers with the end in abutment with collar 3|.
A casing usually called a can is preferably made from metal and has a bottom wall 52 and side walls 54 with an open upper end.
An adjusting screw threadedlyengages the lower wall 52 and a lock washer 62 is in threaded engagement therewith, as shown.
In the assembled relation of the parts the lower end of tube 42 rests on the bottom wall 52 of can 56 and the upper end portion is disposed in half-holes 2B of the condensers 2 with the portion 34 of bushing 30 in the said upper end portion.
Holes '58 are provided in opposite walls 54 of can 56 to receive screws 12 engageable in tapped holes 28 of bracket 22 for holding the parts in assembled relation as shown in Fig. 4.
The components are arranged in compact and efficient relation while the screws are accessible for adjusting the iron cores. The condensers have interfltting parts on inner faces to hold them against relative shifting when in back to back relation and the novel holding means holds the assembly in the casing.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
